Saban's Masked Rider - Toyline Discussion (New figures found!)

Hey guys, I recently got into Kamen Rider Black RX and thought I'd get a few Masked Rider toys on the cheap to represent the series on my toyshelf.

I recently bought a lot of loose toys on eBay and one of the figures in the lot is the "Sword Slashing RoboRider" (the Western equivalent of Shadow Moon, not to be confused with Super Gold's Japanese counterpart).

However, he has me puzzled, as I can't find ANY info on him online - no loose photos, no in-package photos... just a still image from grnrngr's database that has the figure listed as "Historically unreleased or as-yet-unreleased".

Being that his name is like that of a completely different character in Japan, googling images for the figure is a real pain...

So I was wondering - can anyone confirm if this guy had a release? Or was he just for the European market (since I got a UK auction)? Or do I just suck at googling

Not interested in making money off him, just curious on the whole situation

Probably this, but I am admittedly not an expert on the Masked Rider toyline (as I am not a fan of the Masked Rider toyline).

I had always assumed, based on years of fruitless searching and the info on grnrngr's site, that the second series of Masked Rider villains was never produced. Even the first series villains (save for Cyclopter, who I believe shipped in the "hero" assortment for whatever reason) are difficult to track down. I could have earned two masters' degrees in the time it took me to find Double Face (thank goodness I was doing other things in those years besides looking for a monster from a forgotten children's program).

So yeah, I would lean toward UK/European release. Weird that it's taken until 2016 for someone to confirm their existence (if you have RoboRider, the others probably exist as well), but then, Masked Rider isn't particularly well loved.

Out of the villains, the lot I bought has Robosect, Count Dregon and RoboRider. Cyclopter, like you said, seems to be the most common of the bunch and I do remember to have seen Double Face and Skull Reaper once or twice.

Here are pictures from the auction (I will have the figures in a week or two, as they were shipped to a relative of mine):

I'm also certain I saw an auction for "Claw Hugging Maggot" the other day, loose, but can't seem to find it now. But I guess that means that at least some of the other villains were released, but are apparently quite scarce.

That's really quite remarkable. He even has his swords!

Now if only someone could turn up evidence that Rita, Scorpina, and Mutitus from the first series of Evil Space Aliens were actually produced and sold in, like, Italy or some place...:3

Well, no such evidence exists. Because they weren't.

The prototypes shown in the press pics where made, photographed in the infamous photo, and then stored away for years. Only one of each were ever made.

Yeah, yeah, I know. But until this afternoon I thought that about the series 2 Masked Rider villains as well.

But yes, I understand that those were handmade prototypes that (AFAIK) were never even shown publicly. They were never tooled and definitely never produced and sold.

What about Witchblade, though?

...yeah, I know.

I don't recall ever being able to hunt down Witchblade or even the story with that one. A very bizarre situation.

I knew I'd seen the Maggot figure online as well!!

Just found a photo of it:

Damn it, now I need to track it down as well, along with Skull Reaper and Super Blue's Chopper... Who knows, the ZO villains might also turn up eventually.

Holy crap Destructasphere!! O_O Now if Hydrasect and Parasect also show up, I might as well just go and jump off of somewhere....
Did you get it from Europe or did they show up elsewhere too (as so far, I've only seen Maggot in a German auction and I got my RoboRider from the UK).

Any chance you'd be interested in selling Cyclopter, Maggot and Destructasphere...

Got them from the UK. Thankfully, the 2 best condition figures were Destructasphere and Maggot.
Unfortunately Destructasphere is missing his tail but the good thing is it doesn't look out of place not being there.

Well, I guess the hunt is on We need to track down those other two ZO villains!

Grnrngr.com has quite a few things listed as unreleased that were released in the UK.

I do recall seeing these Masked Rider figures growing up so they were around. Weird that it was released in the UK and not the US.

That doesn't surprise me as much as they seem to be so goddamn elusive. I mean, I'd NEVER seen pictures of Robo Rider or Destructisphere before.

I remember seeing all the first wave villains on sale in the UK but never second wave ones.
My guess is, and this is based on what I remember about the time, when Power Rangers and Beetleborgs had moved on to the next series, you'd see all the older stuff on sale in bargain shops... Kinda like how we have B & M and Home Bargains now. Two close to me were Weigh and Save and Bastins and I bought my Turbo Morpher, Divatox and numerous Beetleborgs stuff from them like all the villains. Thing is, when these were out at the time of the show, I don't remember seeing Divatox anywhere nor the Beetleborg villains so by the time they had been released, the TV show had moved on and the big shops were probably not interested so they went to the local bargain retailers.

If you ever want to add them to your site, let me know. I've got a few things still MIB. I've catalogued most of my collection, so hunting the stuff out isn't such a huge pain in the ass now.

So here's something interesting - a possible Cyclopter variant:

Now, the face does seem relatively detailed (complete with Hitler stache) and it could very well be a custom, but the paintjob seems quite clean to me...

Well now, would you look at that! Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...Parasect! (sans wings, unfortunately).

Paid more than I would've liked, but considering this is the first one I've ever seen, I had to grab him, even if he is missing the wings for the arms and head...

Had a chance to also pick up a Maggot, but couldn't afford him, unfortunately, so the search for him and Destructisphere is still on. By now, I expect Reptosect and Hydrasect to also appear at some point.
