McClane (Aka Die Hard 6)

Appearing at the Television Critics Association press tour this week, director Len Wiseman (“Live Free or Die Hard”) has spoken about the long in the works “Die Hard: Year One” and confirmed we will be seeing both a young Holly Gennero alongside a young John McClane through flashbacks in the film.

The partially 1979-set storyline is said to be an origin story for McClane, looking into his time as a police officer with the NYPD. The film will jump back and forth between past and present, working as a prequel and sequel so as to explore “the 70s has ramifications on present-day Bruce”.

Right now Wiseman is waiting for the script from “The Conjuring” scribes Carey W. Hayes and Chad Hayes to be finished before they commence with filming. He tells Slashfilm:

“‘Die Hard’ is going to be happening fairly soon. No dates. I’ve been asked about dates before and I’m always wrong. The date is when the script is right which is when we all want to go. The script has taken quite a long time. I want it to be right, as everybody does.

The truth is we started prepping ‘Live Free or Die Hard’ when the script was not ready. That process of working on the script as we were shooting the movie is not the funnest thing in the world to do. We pulled it together but nobody wants to go through that again.

I think it’s also more so than any other time, [the script]’s very important. We’ve seen it all. We’ve seen a lot. I think even, say, 10 years ago, I think studios, in general, were a little bit more willing to put movies like that, franchise movies into production with a sense of ‘we’ll continue to work on the script.’ I think that attitude has changed.”

Wiseman also confirmed that Bruce Willis is helping with the casting process. He adds: “There is [a young Holly], I will tell you there is” and “there may very well be” a present day reunion between Willis and actress Bonnie Bedelia who hasn’t appeared in the franchise since the second film. It’s also not confirmed if McClane’s children Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Jack (Jai Courtney) will appear.

Please let this be the last one. Let John and Holly get together for good and just let the franchise die with dignity.

Funny thing: there already is a prequel to Die Hard:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Detective_(1968_film) (yeah shocked that a Frank Sinatra movie from 1968 was based on a book whose sequel became this huge franchise)

Huh. I always thought Ernest Goes to Camp was the prequel to Die Hard.

I mean, I'd prefer that they just let the series be and not make anymore sequels. That being said, it's not like they can make something worse than A Good Day To Die Hard.

That's new, a sequel and a prequel at the same time.

But do people really care about Die Hard anymore? We all love Bruce Willis, and still can't help but hate everything since the fourth installment.

(Even though I actually liked Live Free, aside from it feeling a little too long)

Didn't Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me take the "sequel/prequel" approach, as well? (Granted, that one was a....unique case, to be sure....)

I'm guessing we get a new actor for young John, because just digitally de-aging Bruce Willis isn't going to work unless they use the same tech they did in the Marvel movies to de-age Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Douglas.

...really looking to ride that sweet "Logan" train, huh?

I would say they'll give him a dramatic death, but I honestly don't believe they'd ever close the door on making more Die-Hards.

Shyamalan twist ending is in fact, a soft death.

I figure they at least want to finish the series on a high note after the last 2. I just do wish they go back to a lot of the series staples that they went away from. McClane was nearly a superman in 4 and 5. The movies always thrived more when he was merely human and incredibly flawed, which made him such a compelling character in the first place. It's also going to need a charismatic and threatening villain, good side characters, and more realistic action. The past few movies went to high in scale for their actions sequences and their plots in general. Pull it back a bit. This was once the franchise after all the popularized reloading weapons in film.

I think we're about two movies too late on that one.

I would start the movie by showing McClane's long overdue retirement from the NYPD. Bring back old actors throughout the series to attend and treat the retirement almost like a roast of McClane. He's already reconciled with his children, maybe he even has a grandkid or 2 or 3. He just hasn't reconciled with Holly. They don't even have to get back together, but at least come to terms with one another and move on. Maybe that could be the emotional center of the movie.

At some point they'll just go the Jack Ryan/James Bond route and just keep the series going with a new face as McClane once Willis retires from the role for good. We'll be seeing Die Hard movies until the end of time as long as they keep brining in money.
