I think Conan is bored with the hour long talk show format and wants to do something different.
It definitely sounded to me that he's enthusiastic about branching out, especially if the alternative was just getting outright canceled by TBS.

The Tonight Show's been doing this odd edit the past two weeks, where the Friday episodes have new monologues and a new Thank You Notes sketch, but the guests portion is from a rerun from earlier that week...
This was from last April but explains what Colbert and Fallon have been doing.

I thought I'd reply to your post since you posted about this in July

https://variety.com/2017/tv/news/ste...al-1202022807/

The late-night program, which has seen its audience grow in recent months as its host and producers pay ever-closer attention to the headlines and President Trump-dominated news cycle, will test a new format. Rather than trot out repeats, as they were scheduled to do, “Late Show” staffers will pair new opening sketches, monologues and some new guest interviews with encore presentations of past sit-downs between Colbert and visiting celebrities. Both episodes will start at 11:50 PM eastern due to CBS’s telecast of highlight shows from the Masters golf tournament on those nights.
Most people want to hear what they missed in the news and the late night hosts reaction. They'll probably tune out when a celebrity they don't know or could care less appears.

I think he's just evolving just as the format isn't. Every other late night show is essentially the same, barring Fallon whose show is just "Celebrities playing games in an attempt to look relatable" Conan found his niche in his travel stuff and is no doubt going to focus on content similar to that.

It's kind of crazy to think but he's been on TBS for nearly 10 years now. It's not as if he hasn't done a lot since then.

Works perfectly for me. I only watch the shows for the monologues and the opening skits and usually head to bed before the interviews begin.

Except for when Conan hosted Late Night and had a skit between guests.

Some pretty near-the-knuckle gallows humour utilised by the Late Show

Conan is finally back. these changes are gonna be hard to get used to. It just feels like I'm getting half an episode.

I guess one good thing about the smaller studio is that the applause breaks and intros are shorter.

The new set looks like left over Lopez set pieces.

I`m looking forward to when Conan gets his show archive online.I want to see the writers strike episodes again, those were without a doubt the best weeks of shows he ever did.Plus there was also an earlier episode where they "modified" the Walker Texas Ranger lever to show clips from a Chuck Norris movie called,"Breaker!Breaker!"

Fallon's at it again, tonight's episode of The Tonight Show presenting new jokes in the first half combined with guest segments from previous episodes.

I guess whatever works for them and the guest on Friday's schedule. Yesterday's guest segment will probably be on Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Keep watch of what Jimmy wears next week lol. That's sure tell sign where they cut things.

I guess it was a simpler time with Leno and Letterman. Everything done in the afternoon instead of slicing this and that.

I'll do you one better. The Tonight Show hasn't been good since Johnny Carson retired.

It's all just a corporate schmoozefest. "Which political figure can we attempt to humanize today?" "Which "celebrity" can we market?" all done with this smug sleazy smile that suggests you're gonna wake up in an icebath with a missing kidney.

The correct answer is when Conan was fired.
