The death of the record store: HMV in administration

The UK's last surviving national chain of music shops, HMV, is in administration. Looks like streaming finally killed off the record store! Sad news.

This is the second time that has happened to HMV. They survived one back in 2013 and I'm quite sad to hear about this.

Cant say im suprised. Their store numbers became scarce and their online prices started to feel steep and annoying to navigate.

Not surprising. We already lost all of our HMVs here in Canada. A few were turned into Sunrise Records stores, but it definately isn't the same.

Get that spent NOW, if possible. The administrators are under no obligation to accept it, and neither is any future owner in the unlikely event that they get rescued again.

Sad to see, but I can see why. Prices always seemed around 15+ more than the likes of Amazon etc.

Well that's good news. Looks like the record store isn't quite dead yet!

Sunrise Records had already taken over some HMV locations in my province for the last 1-2 years. I can't even remember when the last time it was an HMV. And the transition felt minimal. The interiors are nearly identical.

100 stores staying open. Here's a list of 27 that are closing. One of them is the flagship London store.

There is a Sunrise near me that used to be an HMV and I agree, it's basically identical.

Happy that HMV survives again, happy that my 'home' store is staying open as well as another localish store but gutted that the Fopp store in Manchester is one of the closures as they had a lot of a wider choice of Arrow and Eureka titles compared to the parent stores
