Empire debuted another photo. So far, it appears that this film will be a great way to begin my Christmas break.

I'm so glad that there will be so much tribute to the original like the characters going into a magical animated world. Although I'm pretty sure that if P.L. Travers were alive, she would be furious that they are doing that again.

Now this looks cool.

I wasn't really sure how a Mary Poppins sequel would work, but Blunt does a nice job of channeling Julie Andrews in both voice and song, and I'm interested in seeing Jane and Michael (or at least Michael) going through the same kind of experience that their father did where they have to re-learn how to see the world from the perspective of a child.

I'm also interested in seeing how Lin Manuel Miranda does when he's not acting on the stage and has less freedom to adapt on the fly to the things happening around him.

Man, they're really just Force-Awakens-ing this.

I kinda guessed they'd play it safe, being a sequel to a beloved classic, hitting the same beats didn't surprise me, there's not a lot you can go with that character.

But watching the new trailer, are they even trying? The same animated dancing penguins, the rooftop dance with the lovable working class hero, Dick Van Dyke is still playing the bank manager, Mr Banks is grumpy and resentful of children.

Calling it now: the final number is Michael Banks re-finding his inner joy flying that damn kite with his children whilst singing about it.

The reviews are already being written "...IT'S JUST LIKE MUH CHILDHOOD!"

Didn't that bank manager die of laughter at the end of the film?

Yes, so whereas in the original film Van Dyke played the head of the bank "Mr. Dawes Sr", in this movie he is playing the head of the bank "Mr. Dawes Jr", as if to further illustrate my point.

Yes, more than likely the younger Mr Dawes, who gave Mr, Banks not just his job back, but made him a partner in the bank at the end, while flying kites.

The film will end with Michael realizing he's been dead the entire time, and Mary's been sent to see him off to the next life.

"A spoonful of sugar will help the deceased move on, in the most delightful way."

While it certainly does capture a feeling of wonder and whimsy, that it does seem to be retaking stuff from the first movie and next-gen-ing it makes feel like a bit of a drag. I'll see it of course but I can't help but feel that this will be rather by the numbers.

Considering the actor who played Michael in the original died young (only 21), that might be considered in bad taste by any family he has.

Exhibitors at the NATO Conference have given the film RAVE reviews.

“Director Rob Marshall has created a masterpiece in updating one of the most beloved stories of all time,” said one very high up executive of a large theatre chain. “It is an uplifting story and visually lush film, with happy songs, joyous choreography and some just dazzling animated scenes. In Mary Poppins Returns, once again Disney has made a family movie for the ages.”

Another exec raved: “It is [in all caps] MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF THE YEAR. I grew up with Mary Poppins and love everything about the original, and the sequel absolutely met my high expectations. Loved!”

Another major name in exhibition said: “Mary Poppins Returns brings back all the wonder and magic of the original film while adding new layers in both music, songs and stunning visuals. The film is sure to be a holiday favorite, so hats off to Rob Marshall.”

It's such a treat to see the characters will be visiting a world that looks very much like hand drawn animation, which is something people don't often see in movies nowadays.
