There is some concept art from the the third movie in the link below. The story was very different and it looked more sad. This was before Bob Iger purchased Pixar in 2006.

Now see if they could revive this idea and make it Toy Story 4 then I'd be ok with that.

The problem I always had with that is that it would be yet another rescue mission. We've had enough of those.

I think a great way to credibly pull off a Toy Story 4 would be to set it in the "imagination" world. So Buzz could actually fly and shoot lasers, Rex would be an actual dinosaur, Hamm would be Evil Dr. Porkchop, etc.

I imagine that's why it didn't go ahead, going from "rescuing Woody" to "rescuing Buzz" would draw a lot of criticism.

Have it be a midquel between 2 and 3 so we can have Bo Peep, RC, and the rest of the old gang back. Have younger Andy just show up at the start to kick things off, maybe occasionally popping up when he's called away, kind of like an intermission.

It wouldn't be toy story that way if you ask me. I already didn't like how that aspect of Toy Story that time forgot. While not technically set in an imagination world, the sets were designed and shot in a way that downplayed the toy aspect. I didn't like that. Seeing all the inperfections in the set and sometimes a human, animal or prop to remind us where we are is part of the charm of this franchise.

Yeah I agree. I don't think its a good idea. Toy Story 3 was better than I anticipated. But Toy Story 4, I think they are pushing it. Toy Story 3 ended on a good note, anything else would be stretching it.
Exactly. There is no point to making this. >_> I also expect it to get mild reviews, but no real info is known yet, so we'll just need to see.

Do we really need a 4th Toy Story movie?

The ending of the 3rd movie was the perfect way to end the franchise. Unless Toy Story 4 is some sort of prequel to the 1st one as to how all of the toys came into Andy's care, or if it takes place before the 3rd movie before Andy became a adult & going to college, I can't see how this one would turn out.

@ Loghorn,

According to Lasseter the idea for the next one would be picking up where the last one left off and a love story involved. Obviously Jessie & Buzz have become paired together but Woody is pretty much a single guy amongst his pals his Boo Peep left. Slinky too but I wont go into that. Or maybe even their new owner having a schoolgirl crush. I agree that Toy Story 3 was the perfect conclusion to their time with Andy and Bonnie is like their new beginning but I'd sort of rather just leave it at that. Due to 3 being highly successful though this next installment will probably happen. I just hope the story telling will be as good as 2 and 3. I loved Jessie's origin story, Mrs. Potatohead, Zerk, why space toys replaced cowboy toys.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh.

On one hand, it's nice that this will not be following up the ending of TS3 and leaving it be. On the other hand....romantic comedy. WOW.

Could this also mean that we'll see an entirely different set of characters?

One of the things I always loved about the TS movies is the universally identifiable themes I can recognize from a childhood of playing with toys and continued collector.

The first had childhood toys merged with action figures and showed the evolving interests of a growing child, while showing the difference of how kids treat their play things. The second showed the differences of relationships of boys and girls with their toys, the collecting of toys for financial reasons, how damaged and older toys are sold, lost or just disposed of. The third showed what happens to toys after the owner doesn't play with them anymore and has moved on with their life without the toys as a part of it.

Bonnie with her new toys does provide a new dynamic but now I feel it may start retreading story, like having them go through a situation like what Jessie went through with her owner.

Really think they should have just made more TV specials and shorts. At least the TV specials made some interesting world-building in the Toy Story world.

They're saying it's going to focus more on the toys..I don't get that.

It's been a while since i've seen them but haven't they pretty much always done that? The toys always seemed to get most of the focus over the humans. I'm not saying the human characters weren't important, but the toys always were the stars.

If they take away human characters completely, or only use them when they have to as basically extras, that would be disappointing for me. Some of the best scenes, are the rare ones that actually do focus on the humans.

I won't really judge this completely until we get more information, trailers, etc. But this sounds like it will be mediocre. I don't think it will be terrible, but just won't live up to the Pixar name, like the kind of reception Cars 2 got. I didn't mind Cars 2, but I wasn't a huge fan of the first one to begin with.

Well, I'm glad this will not be a direct sequel to the third film. A stand alone film works much better.

What does stand alone in the context of toy story even mean? Its not like they ever planned on any of the sequels happening ahead of time. They've all stood on their own, even though they referenced the previous entries.
