Toy Story 4

Variety reports that Disney and Pixar are set to bring back the "Toy Story" franchise with a fourth film directed by John Lasseter. The announcement was made during the Walt Disney Company's quarterly earnings call by Disney head Bob Iger.

"Toy Story 3" had an incredible box office run for Disney in 2010, earning close to $1.1 billion worldwide. While the third film put a cap on the toys' adventures, leaving them with a new owner and other new toys with which to interact as their old owner Andy went off to college, the franchise has continued with a series of shorts and television specials, including the upcoming "Toy Story that Time Forgot" and 2013's "Toy Story of Terror."

While the cast and further details of "Toy Story 4" are currently unknown, it's a pretty good assumption that most of the cast -- including Tom Hanks and Tim Allen -- would come back to reprise their roles as they've done for the television specials. Lasseter's return is also understandable -- the director has been at the helm for every "Toy Story" feature film since the debut Disney/Pixar collaboration in 1995.

"Toy Story 4" is set for June 2017.

This is surprising. I really didn't think they would make another one and I would've been fine if Toy Story 3 had been the last movie. I guess it's cool but there's a long time until this comes out so there's time to think about it more.

I guess Pixar may want that all time box office record or at least in the top 2 or 3.

I got mixed feelings. On one hand I'm happy to have another Toy Story film, but on the other hand Toy Story 3 was a perfect way to end the series.

I've been crazy about Toy Story since I saw the original in the cinema back in the day and... I don't think I feel all that excited about this news for some reason. Hmm.

Noooo!!!

This is one of those things where if they can pull it off, it would be amazing to have for the first time I can think of, a quadtrilogy (tetralogy?) that managed never dip in quality.

But the risk in failing is so incredibly high its not even worth it in my eyes. The third movie was the perfect ending to an amazing trilogy. Why push your luck trying to do more? They had the right idea with the tv specials, I don't see why they couldn't just keep that going instead.

Really sick of Pixar's recent sequels. Usually they just wind up devaluing the original film.

.....ugh.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm more excited than Cars freaking 3 than a Toy Story 4.

Like everyone said they ended TS3 on a high note and have been doing great showcasing standalone adventures and moments through the shorts and other specials. What's left for them to do at this point?

Lassester come closer my friend, closer, closer. Slap right in your face! You have completely ruined one of the best conclusions ever to a film series! I'll admit that I was skeptical about Toy Story 3 happening because the second one ended nicely. However, the third movie closed the chapter perfectly and you are taking it all away!

Topping it isn't the issue, the issue is how do you CONTINUE the story? Unnecessary sequel is unnecessary. That's all there is to it.

It's not surprising. The number of Toy Story 'shorts' and 'specials' Pixar have been churning out shows they're not willing to leave it alone. But hey, at least leaving 7 years between sequels is pretty good for Disney, a number of us were expecting Toy Story 4 to get fast-tracked for 2012.

But seriously, they ended the story at 3. I'll go watch 4 and I'll just pretend to myself that it's non-canon.

There's no reason for head canon for this franchise yet. they've yet to let most people down, even after all the shorts. But I guess time will tell.
