RIP Machinima

Time Warner just significantly beefed up its digital holdings with an agreement to buy Machinima, the digital video service that targets gamers. The company was already a major investor.

Machinima generated about $25 million in revenues last year. It has raised nearly $98 million from several funding rounds, including one that Time Warner led last year for $24 million. Other investors included Redpoint Ventures, MK Capital, and Allen DeBevoise.

Warner Bros will fold Machinima into Warner Bros Digital Networks, created in June to develop digital and video productions. It is planning direct-to-consumer services, and works existing ones at corporate cousins Turner and HBO.

The gaming entertainment service has “enormous reach and high engagement with audiences that play our games and are big fans of DC films and television shows,” says Craig Hunegs, who’s president of the WB unit. “Machinima also produces great, high quality content for their community, and together we can create an even more compelling experience and do some really exciting things involving our key franchises. This acquisition is another meaningful move forward as Warner Bros. develops more direct relationships with our consumers.”

In addition to supplying cash, Warner Bros. has made several online-video programming deals with Machinima, including Mortal Kombat: Legacy and the Justice League: Gods And Monsters Chronicles.

The companies also share an interest in the fast-growing eSports business. This year Turner teamed with WME-IMG to create an eSports venture called eLeague.

Around the same time, Machinima introduced Mach-1, which provides data and analytics to advertisers understand the eSports terrain and opportunities. The company’s Machinma Preferred Media Solutions helps them navigate what it calls “the complex, layered topography of gaming and fandom.”

The collaborations provide “proof points as to how the companies can work together to accelerate Machinima’s growth plans,” Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein says. “We’ll now be able to take full advantage of Warner Bros.’ intellectual property, sales and distribution, while still creating content for social and premium digital platforms that gamers and geeks love. Plus, we’ll be fully embedded and can help Warner Bros. continue their incredible digital marketing successes. It’s honestly a win-win.”

Why is this news? Didn't they already have controlling interest in the company?

And any idiot could see the site had some major company behind it for all of the significant-budget entertainment to be found on it.

We all know the story of the Machinima channel. Otter Media ended up taking over the channel from Warner but now, all videos on that channel have been deleted, leaving the channel officially dead. The internet community stood in shock as over ten years of content and history were just erased in the blink of an eye. You can see the results for yourself by going here: https://www.youtube.com/user/machinima For those unfamiliar with the term, Machinima is the act of taking assets from within a video game via its game engine, mainly characters, and manipulating the animation to create movies, shorts, parodies, and other forms of video media. Machinima Inc. was founded in January 2000 with the sole purpose of providing such content through YouTube. Warner Bros. bought the company in 2016 and Otter Media snatched it from them earlier this year. Machinima Inc. did come under fire over the years, accused of taking other YouTuber’s work but despite that, it became a staple of the YouTube and gaming community. The hashtag #RIPMachinima began trending worldwide on Twitter. You don’t need to look far down the results of the hashtag search to see just what kind of impact the sudden deletion of their video catalog has had on the community. Otter Media, owned by AT&T, is coming under fire for the move and has, so far, not responded with any comments over their actions. Perhaps we will never know the reason why they did this. All we know is that a big piece of internet history is now gone.

Yeah, I'm not shedding too many tears over this. I've heard horror stories over how Machinima fucked over their content creators. There were probably decent people in the company who'll be out of work and I hope they find new (and better) jobs.

That article is somewhat mistaken. Otter Media didn't buy Machinima from WB, Otter Media became part of WB via AT&T.

Also, https://kotaku.com/entire-machinima-...et-to-private-

Otter Media wrote:
We are focused on creating new content with the Machinima team, which will be distributed on new channels to be announced in the coming months.

In the meantime the Machinima network of creator channels continues to showcase the talents of the network. As part of this focus on new content, we have pivoted from distributing content on a handful of legacy operated channels.

Looks like Ricky and Eliot from Machima's ETC channel got out just in time and made the right choice to start their own channel Internet Today

I wonder this will affect the wars for Cybertron Cartoon.

Isn't Machinima just a channel that gets content from a bunch of creators?

What's to stop said creators from bailing due to the buyout?

Not much. Lots of them have already bailed since there wasn't much a reason to hold the contracts in place. The buyout was a while ago so apparently the biggest ones have already moved on.

Looking at other discussions about this, it seems the channel was nuked due to the unclear status of the IP rights. Some Machinima videos are owned by Machinima, while others are owned by the relevant personalities and are simply distributed through the channel. Considering the massive size of the video library, and the fact that most of them aren't making money anymore due to age, Warner decided it was safer and more cost efficient to just set all the videos to private than sort through which videos it would be "safe" to keep available to the public.
