Luna and her husband, Rolf, would be more appropriate choices to narrate.
I have to disagree, Rolf isn't even a fully realized character, he's just a footnote in the Harry Potter universe, if they used him as a narrator they would have to establish his character first if they want him to be more than some dude sitting next to Luna Lovegood. I don't even want a narrator, I don't think it's necessary.

Yes, because as we all know, making money is a heinous crime. It's not as if someone can, I dunno, please fans at the same time and not make it too obvious it's a cash grab.

Yea, not sure if I'll bother to see this. Got bored of the Harry films. In fact, I never saw the eighth movie (loved the books though!).

Completely agreed. But I guess Newt himself isn't really a fully realized character either but they will have the whole movie for that. I don't see why we would need a narrator for something like this. If they did a Quidditch Through the Ages documentary film like someone suggested, which would be awesome, we would definitely need one in that case. But for this it's just not necessary.

Quidditch Through The Ages next, if this does well, for certain.

And after that, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, please and thank you.

We don't necessarily need a narrator, but having one offers a way into the story for general audiences who might otherwise be inclined to wonder 'how can you have a movie in the HP universe without Harry?', and gives the story some 'connective tissue' with what's come before, especially if the narrator is a familiar character such as Luna (as an adult talking to her and Rolf's sons), Hagrid (as an adult - since he wasn't born yet in the '20s - talking to somebody), or even Dumbledore.

Technically speaking, this isn't 'another Harry Potter movie'; it's an entirely new movie set in the HP universe.

I'm thinking one of the older characters could just make a cameo or something. Dumbledore's certainly old enough to where the character could appear in the film.

But for this movie to sell to general audiences who aren't big HP fans, it's gonna have to do more than just have a character narrate. It's going to have to interest them on another level if they aren't familiar with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, it's just gonna have to look like a good movie and work well as a standalone story. Big HP fans are going to see it regardless but if it's gonna branch out to other people it needs a lot more than a supporting character narrate the film.

Not related to Fantastic Beasts, but this is something a little more Harry related.

Rowling announced Harry Potter stage play that'll focus on his childhood pre-Hogwarts.

I just wonder how much they can do with this. It's already a foregone conclusion that Harry had a crappy childhood, so what would this offer aside from it being a stage play and all that?

To comment on the 'new film series', I'm not on board. Generally when it's stated straight up that a movie is supposed to be the start of a new trilogy, it generally doesn't do well. John Carter, Battleship, Terminator Salvation, Prince Of Persia, Green Lantern, Lone Ranger, when you're only making a movie so you can franchise it and make more, the movie's not exactly going to be fantastic. So when I hear WB is eyeing up a new HP series before the first one is even out, it gives me the same feelings. One at a time, Hollywood, one at a time.

Except that Rowling herself is involved, so obviously she must have some plan. And it's already part of an established universe.

Personally, I'm no more reassured by the fact that JKR is involved. In the end it sounds to me like it's about 'tentpoles'. WB knows they're gonna lose out on that sweet sweet LOTR money after next year when Hobbit 3 is released, all they've got in their belt for tentpoles is hoping that the DCU takes off. It's the same reason Universal is always murmuring about rebooting The Mummy and what-have-you, they want a movie so popular they can immediately sign off on two more.

That's a good point. The Tolkien Estate is not the least bit interested in licensing the film rights to the man's remaining works, and as long as Christopher Tolkien or those who share his mindset are in charge, that's not going to change. Another high-profile fantasy franchise would be exactly what they want at this point.

as a potterhead that wears a ravenclaw scarf whenever it's cold, I have to say, I'm really looking forward to this. I will see it. 5 times. And then 5 more if its good.

Yeah, as happy I am that we're getting expanded HP material, I do think a movie was too soon and WAY to risky. Having the expanded material be just novels, comics, or games or the like I could get behind since those are a lot more niche then a high-profile mainstream release.

Nevermind that no matter how it gets marketed, it could be lose-lose. You either slap the Harry Potter name onto it and have people crying foul over there being no Harry, or you don't mention the Potter connection at all, and possibly misinform the people that ARE going to be your guaranteed audience members, the movie-Potterheads.

Harry Potter Babies?

Ugh, they're really rimming this franchise...

I'd say as long as Rowling is alive and in charge of her characters and world, whatever rimming can occur. She obviously knows her stuff more than anyone else so it's fine.

Once she passes on and/or she doesn't choose somebody to carry it out that's when I'll draw the line if they insist on doing new stuff.
