Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (and other Harry Potter spinoff movies)

So...yeah. This is happening.

Warner Bros. has announced a new Harry Potter-related film series based in the world of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie will be an “original story and will mark Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is planned as the first picture in a new film series.”

What’s more, the series will focus on the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander. According to Rowling, the first film will be set 70 years before the first Harry Potter book in New York.

Here is J.K. Rowling’s full statement about today’s announcement:

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.

As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”

“We are incredibly honored that Jo has chosen to partner with Warner Bros. on this exciting new exploration of the world of wizardry which has been tremendously successful across all of our businesses,” said Kevin Tsujihara, Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment. “She is an extraordinary writer, who ignited a reading revolution around the world, which then became an unprecedented film phenomenon. We know that audiences will be as excited as we are to see what her brilliant and boundless imagination conjures up for us.”

In addition to today’s movie series announcement, Warner Bros. and Rowling have also agreed on distribution deals related to The Casual Vacancy television miniseries as well as a continued theme park partnership.
On one hand, I'm very curious how this will be done without the actual Harry character in it. The masses who haven't read the books likely will be confused. On the other hand, the inner-Harry fan in my is practically screaming in delight.

It can easily be done without Harry, as this is not a Harry Potter film... it's merely set in the same universe as Harry Potter. Spells, Muggles, Hogwarts, it'll all be there... just Harry isn't even alive yet. It's just a part of the HP expanded universe. These films will be to Harry Potter as Torchwood/SJA is to Doctor Who, or Private Practice is to Grey's Anatomy, or Prometheus is to the Alien franchise, etc.

New York in the early 1920s sounds interesting, that period isn't portrayed very often and it's written by Rowling herself, I'm hyped!

We'll finally be able to hear how Americans pronounce Rowling's spells...

This.

There are ways to link it to the HP series beyond it being set in the same universe, though, such as setting up Luna and her husband, Rolf, as narrators for the story.

If they had said that Rowling wasn't to be apart of it. I'd have quickly dismissed it.

...well then. Not how I imagined them getting the ball rolling on a Harry Potter EU, but excited all the same.

As long as we don't get any assholes asking "Where's Harry?" for the film...

Awesome.

It's going to be interesting to see how this works though, especially for casual fans. It does seem kind of random. I understand expanding the universe..but of all the characters in the HP universe they chose an author of a book Harry had to read? An author of a book within the book as the main character. It's just kind of funny to me.

But I'm a huge HP fan so I'm certainly glad we are getting something.

Now this actually sounds like a really good idea. We never saw enough quidditch in the movies IMO. The Goblet of Fire movie was a perfect opportunity for us to see a full quidditch game without something interrupting it like Dementors, rogue bludgers, etc. For the first time we could have see the game through all players eyes and not just the seeker. They really dropped the ball on that one.

Yeah, I felt like we got jibbed when they chose not to actually show the Quidditch World Cup.

Also, still waiting for my anthology film on the Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Now this has potential. I'm hoping we get to see some of the more deadly (and rare) beasts, like Quintapeds and Nundu.

Ah, the inevitable money grab has finally arrived. But if Star Wars can get by with thousands of years of set-up to A New Hope, Harry Potter should do just as well.

But, yeah, they were totally jealous that The Hobbit movies worked.

^ Primo, we don't know when Warner Bros. first approached JKR and got her thinking about this whole thing, so it's rather unfair to call it simply a 'money grab'.

Not really, no. For starters, Harry will be nowhere to be found in this one.

So it's a money grab that might not even grab any money!
