I absolutely love this show. Season 2 has been great so far. Only two episodes though so we'll see how the rest fair.

While I enjoy the show, I just hope they expand beyond Bortus. It feels like most of the heavy content ends up with him. I like Bortus and all, but lets have him take a back seat a bit for awhile.

Though last week's had me laughing. After Klyden found out about Bortus' porn habits they were in counseling with Doctor Finn and she brings up porn addiction as a disease. Bortus is all "Is there an injection I can take to cure this disease?" And Klyden chimes in "You've had enough injections already." Stupid, but damn funny.

I do find it impressive that the show can tackle serious subjects yet also be ridiculous at the same time, all the while be entertaining. I really wasn't expecting to like this series so much when I started watching last season but yeah, stuck with it now.

Looking at the production codes, the second episode was the one taken from the end of season 1. Specifically, it was supposed to be 12 of 13.

Hmm, the second episode? I assumed the first ep, the one shown the Sun before was the leftover from S1. Eh, oh well either way.

It makes more sense that the second episode was the one that was the holdover, since they introduced a new character in the premiere, and they don't make any appearance or mention in the second episode.

I still stand by my comment that the show could be done completely straight and not lose a beat...

they could do an episode on porn (that Trek wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole) without the crass humor remarks and it would still work...

you can do more outlandish stories (like the one on social media last season) without going to the gutter for lowbrow humor...

Oh yeah good point, didn't think about that. Actually I totally spaced on her heh, whoops.

Sure, you could. But some of the charm of the show at least I feel, is their ability to pull off that crass humor well. Mostly. Like...they did an entire episode centered around Bortus having to go back home for a religious ceremony involving their yearly peeing. And they played it straight, aside from a couple jokes. But they treated the matter seriously which for me is what made it more funny. It's totally ridiculous, but yet somehow it works. Could they make a totally straight show about a group of space explorers? Yes, and it's been done. But Orville has fun with it's subject while also generally being a straight show, and that's more entertaining than just watching another copycat series.

That and generally just cause humor is lowbrow doesn't always mean it's bad humor. And even when it is sometimes it's easy to brush it off and enjoy the rest of the good stuff around it, for me at least. So that may not be the case for some, but obviously not everyone is going to like the show for what it is.

What works for me about The Orville is not that it's a parody of Star Trek (because it's kind of not. The humor of the show rarely comes from poking fun at Star Trek and its tropes), but because it's more of "Star Trek as a workplace comedy." You take out the workplace comedy aspects and you don't have much of a show. Like taking the comedy out of The Office or Superstore. You're just left with a show about selling paper or working in a big box retailer.

I feel that the comedy in The Orville is real. It's the sort of thing you'd hear in real life. In the first episode, you would totally get some joker commenting about "taking the piss" in real life.

It really does feel like it's Star Trekking better than Star Trek right now. I think they've really got a hold on the balance of comedy and serious sci-fi tone. Especially Ed's little rant about having a normal ship, it works as both a comedic moment and the captain legitimately mad. It's not been overly bizarre humor, I agree that it does have that real world feel. Like this is star trek as if it had real normal everyday people not idealized heroes mixed in.

I can't say enough good things about this series and am totally willing to accept it as a legitimate sci-fi franchise option. I am really hopeful Fox keeps it around as long as MacFarlene can pull it off. Even the break from seasons felt seamless like it just naturally moved along from where season 1 ended as if there was no break. Truly, this deserves a Six Seasons and a Movie.

Well that was an unexpected episode.
So is there a particular reason they got rid of Alara? I liked her, I was really bummed to see her go. Did the actress get another gig or something? Just seems a real shame to get rid of her character. Also I can care less about the new security chief, if they keep that guy around. He feels like all he is is there for jokes and nothing more. Maybe that wont be the case, but yeah I just didn't care for him as brief as his appearance was.

Good episode though. A little dark, but yeah I enjoyed it. Though I expected a comment from Gordon or Ed about how he'd get the bottle when he threw it out of the ship to be smashed by the gravity. But guess that didn't matter. Would've been amusing though.

So looking online, seems there's no clear reason why Halston(Alara) is leaving. I don't really follow celebrity gossip stuff but I guess she was dating Seth, and that relationship ended so between that and maybe other projects available, she's out. And maybe this isn't new news, but I guess a Jessica Szohr was cast last year and it seems she'll be the new security chief, also a Xelayan.

that was a great character development episode for Alara

but of course
it always happens when a character departs, so it was kinda long overdue

I was wondering if they would dare kill her off at one point, sacrificing herself for her sister or father...it would have been a bummer of an ending for the character but very daring (though maybe a little too similar to Yar's departure on STNG)...having a future new security chief from the same species led to many theories that maybe Alara would go through a metamorphasis (like the Doctor) or some other weird ideas, but it was a good sendoff for her this way...

Halston's departure was long suspected and maybe having two leftover episodes from season one was an attempt to soften the blow....

loved Picardo's return and throw in a heel-turn for Billingsly and it was quite the dramatic episode...

thought for a second the crushed bottle was going to be inside the box at the end but the pickle jar was a nice nod to the first season's (pilot?) gag

Booooooooooooooooooo
Alara was the best character on the show last year

But it was funny to see The Doctor and Doctor Phlox on screen together.

It's been rumored since before season 1 ended that she was leaving. The line is that she got a couple of movie offers that interfered with the Orville shooting schedule. Unofficially, she and Seth MacFarlane briefly dated during season 1, so it's possible the dissolution of their romantic coupling led to issues with their working relationship (even if their post-breakup relationship was cordial, it may have still been awkward/unpleasant for them to spend long shooting days around one another). If one of them was going to go, it wasn't going to be the show's creator.

The producers have left the door open for her to return, but who knows if she will. They wouldn't even confirm she was leaving until after tonight's episode aired.

The interim security chief isn't hanging around. Jessica Szohr has been cast as a new security chief. The same rumors that said Halston Sage was leaving early is season 2 also said that the new security chief, Talla, will be from the same species as Alara.

I'm personally bummed about Alara's departure. I really liked the character. It remains to be seen how the show and cast chemistry are affected going forward.

Now thats what i call a good episode. Outshined the last two by so much for me

i remember hearing halston sage was leaving the show, but originally thought she was just gonna get an off screen exit. Really glad she got a full on goodbye episode with a good reasoning and journey for wanting to leave rather than just saying her times up working on the Orville

Hope she gets a return cameo in the future

That guy was played by Patrick Warburton, aka Joe Swanson from Family Guy, so it was like a mates thing from Seth. Kind of like how Cleveland's VA is the bulbous head alien.

I KNEW that must have been
Warburton
because his voice is so distinct

I suppose he'll
die a horrible death and open up a spot for the new security chief but it might be funnier if his idiosyncrasies just grate on the crew so much he gets transferred despite his glowing record

other than the word 'boner' I believe the episode was done completely without the traditional Macfarlane lowbrow humor

while watching I was wondering how they would handle
Alara's exit and thought maybe that son the criminal couple was mentioning would be a love-at-first sight sort of thing that made her want to stay...this was all before the episode turned dark, which was another great thing about how the show can be written

I think thats why the episode probably connected with me so well. Like i enjoy seths humour as a collective throughout all his content. I'm certainly not watching this series to take it seriously, but I guess it was just nice to have the episode flow without (what i believe to be) forced and rubbish jokes all over the place, aswell as an enjoyable story.

Probably took him out, then realized there were people there. So they stashed the body and then weren't able to retrieve it. Probably why they showed up how they did. And they did hide it so it wasn't too noticeable.
