The Orville

So Seth McFarlande's The Orville has premiered. What did everyone think? Did you enjoy it or did you agree with the critics and thought it was terrible?

I pleasantly enjoyed he first episode from the characters to the awesome looking aliens. The special effects we're exceptional for a network tv series. It seems it's going for a light hearted edgy Star Trek and I can dig it.

I liked it!
It wasn't saturated in comedy, but one thing i think you have to consider is mannerisms can count as comedy and there was quite a few of those that made me laugh.
Kind of got a feel for the characters but hoping the next few episodes make their traits abit more defined.

The effects and everything surprised me... They must have a decent budget to pull them off for 13 episodes... more than the budget used for that deer on walking dead anyway

Hoping it does well and can warrant a second season
Wonder how the die hard star trek fans who watched felt about it.

It was fine. The only negatives I have towards it: pacing and info dump. It felt like a 2 hour pilot in one hour. Than a few scenes with info dumping. It's a pilot so the actors don't have their footing yet. But all the nods from TNG, TMP, ENT are all done fine. The jokes are decent to good. I'd like to see what happens towards Ed and his ex wife.

A lot of the effects are done by actual physical models. The ship is one.

I really enjoyed it. And I'm iffy when it comes to Seth McFarlane's comedy. (I love some of it, and hate some of it. Family Guy has gotten way too in your face for me as of late.) But this had a great balance. And yeah, the effects are impressive as all get out.

It felt like it doesn't know what it wants to be. Too genuine to be hysterical, too goofy to be taken seriously, which ultimately left it north of just plain bland. The black guy was completely dry, and I don't think the robot made one wise crack after his introduction scene.

I do know that pilots are either your best episode or your worst episode, so I'm hoping there's a groove the writers settled into for the rest of the season.

Kelly wanted to hide the fact she was the one who convinced the admiral to pick him for the Orville command. If he finds out. That's gonna blow up in her face.

If this does get cancelled by Fox I'm sure SyFy would gladly pick it up. I'm surprised that it's not on SyFy actually.

They're too busy airing wrestling.

Not quite two years, The last Smackdown on SyFy was December 31, 2015.

I actually loved it. It wasn't over comical nor overly serious. It just seemed to be a bright "space exploration" type show without being despairing and dystopian. I kinda felt that these people would be ordinary people. Not so much prim and proper... just normal folks, going to work and trying to get though the day.

That was the point Seth was trying to make with the show. He didn't like how Sci-Fi (Star Trek included) went down the dark, edgy path.

only Seth MacFarlane could look at Galaxy Quest & think "this needs more sexism & crude humor."

Or the intention of this was to serve it as a deconstruction of the recent trend of dark and edgy sci-fi stuff.

At first I was disappointed by the early reviews saying it wasn't funny, then watching it I realized why it's not huge laugh funny like Macfarlane's other work. It dawned on me in a "Oh shit, this is actually just Star Trek but without the pretentious utopian personalities" moment.

I really like it in that view. It's doing better Star Trek than the actual Trek is doing lately. It feels like a TNG episode without being too on the nose parody or knock off. It's got the right tone and attitude to make it stand out from the other guys, while still being appealing to that audience.

I assume the first episode though is just playing it safe and we'll get more crude humor as it goes along. Which works in this setting. The sci fi adventure show rarely shows a realistic personality, everyone's either perfect or dramatic. Just ordinary joes on the job makes it really interesting, especially with what that job is.

There is a part of me that thinks Seth Macfarlane just tricked Fox into buying his Star Trek fanfiction under the guise of a comedy and he's just going to go full Sci-Fi Adventure show on them.

These are 2 of a few characters who i feel apply to my statement regarding mannerisms classing as comedy.

i'll be super surprised if they dont get closer or atleast share some sort of kiss/opening up of emotions towards each other
But that secret is 100% going to come out at some point
