Smile Precure Episode 8: The Mascot Switcheroo

Our first shot is Miyuki running towards school with Candy in her bag. Miyuki's in such a good mood that she's confident she won't be late for school this time. Suddenly Candy notices what appears to be shooting stars in the sky. Getting Miyuki's attention as well, the two check it out and find that the shooting stars are actually a pair of rings. Candy requests to see them before Miyuki can ponder where they came from, but while examining one of them, the two rings attach themselves to Candy and Miyuki. A passing Akane wishes them good morning, and the two greet her...only to find that they've switched bodies, and Miyuki freaks out.

After our OP with New Stage footage featuring the Max Heart, Fresh and Heartcatch teams, we cut to the Bad End Kingdom where Red Orge is eating and watching TV. Majorina rushes by and makes a ruckus searching through some of her stuff, claiming that her "great invention" is missing. Wolfrun further queries, and Majorina explains her great invention is called "The Switcheroo" a pair of rings that makes 2 humans switch bodies. Majorina ignores the naming criticism of her two cohorts and explains that they've disappeared from a table. This seems to jog Red Ogre's memory, as he previously spotted the two rings on a table and examined them before he accidentally sneezed them away. The irate Majorina storms away from the castle with a rush of Flintstones sound effects.

Back at school, the other 4 Smiles meet with the switched Candy and Miyuki; Akane and Nao are still in disbelief while Yayoi finds it cute. To prove it, Candy in Miyuki's body proceeds to wiggle her ear, something only Candy can do. Miyuki in Candy's body decides to imitate and starts having fun playing with her elongated hair ears. Reika suggests to take off the rings, but they're stuck fast onto Candy and Miyuki. Yayoi suggests using the Ring Decor, but that doesn't work either. The topic of class suddenly comes to mind, and they have no choice but to have Candy as Miyuki attend class with them, to Miyuki's dismay.

At class, they have a pop quiz, and Miyuki as Candy nearly blows her cover, while Candy as Miyuki questions what a pop quiz is. Candy assures Miyuki that the pop quiz will be no problem, but the teacher later questions why her test paper has a picture of Candy on it, and is later forced to go to the teacher's lounge for questioning. Further incidents happen in the rest of the classes; botching up reading recitation, drawing on the chalk board in social studies, blowing up the chemistry lab, and messing up in PE. All the while the other 4 Smile's continue to cover for Candy and her odd behavior, and get completely tuckered out in the process.

While the 4 Smile's and Miyuki rest, Candy comes in with a bunch of review notes and failed test papers. Miyuki loses it and gets angry at Candy for ruining her school life, while Candy equally gets mad and confused. The other 4 calm them down and ponder what to do now, but they suddenly find that Candy has disappeared. Meanwhile at a police station, Majorina asks a cop where The Switcheroo is, and the cop of course doesn't know what to make of it. Suddenly Majorina spots Candy running by and sees the ring on her finger, and gives chase with a rush of Flintstones sound effects.

At a playground, Candy wonders why Miyuki is pissed off, when she spots two children in the sandpit and proceeds to play with them. Elsewhere, Miyuki sits under a stone bench and wonders where Candy is. The other 4 Smile's appear and have no luck finding Candy either. Miyuki ponders that Candy has been working her hardest ever since they met each other and Candy tried her best to fit in as a human today too. Miyuki feels she should apologize to Candy, and they all split off to find her again. Back at the playground, Candy and the two kids continue to play until they leave. Candy wonders again if Miyuki is still mad at her and before she can leave, Majorina arrives. She activates a Bad End, and the number on the evil meter goes up another notch. Candy panics at what to do, then she remembers that she has Miyuki's henshin device. However, she tries to transform and it doesn't happen. Majorina then puts two and two together that it's actually Candy in Miyuki's body. Suddenly Miyuki and the others appear, and though they can't get Cure Happy, the other 4 proceed to transform, and Majorina summons an Akanbe out of a playground ride.

The Akanbe however turns to still be the size of a playground ride, and Majorina warns that it's not to be underestimated. The Akanbe, with its speed, manages to outmaneuver the 4 Smile's and traps them in springs. Majorina then turns her eyes on Candy and Miyuki, commenting how lucky it is that the rings were picked up by them, and gloats by showing them the antidote to undo the curse, calling it "The Returner". Akane and Nao quip that the name is lame while Majorina tells them to shut up and orders the Akanbe to charge. Suddenly, Candy steps in the Akanbe's path, vowing to protect Miyuki as she would if they were in their actual bodies. Emboldened by her words, Miyuki steps in front of Candy, declaring that, even if she can't transform, she'll protect her after Candy did her best even while switched. The henshin device suddenly reacts, and Miyuki takes it after she and Candy apologize to each other for getting at each others throats. Miyuki transforms in a completely new transformation sequence, becoming Cure Candy.

While the 4 Smile's are amazed, Majorina scoffs at the size of Miyuki. Candy suggests to Miyuki to use her ears, and she and the Akanbe fight, as Miyuki uses her ear hair to kick its ass and tire and outmaneuver the Akanbe all over the playground. Sensing an opening, Akane proceeds to role into Majorina, knocking the antidote out of her hand and into Candy's. With the Akanbe tired out and flung into the air with a see-saw, Miyuki uses her special attack and destroys the Akanbe, obtaining the Cherry Blossom Decor and bringing their Decor number to 8.

Later, they proceed to try the antidote, and it works. While the other 4 Smile's comment on how a long day it's been, Miyuki faces a ton of studying to do, while Candy promises to help her. The other 4 watch happily as Miyuki and Candy jump off into the sunset.
--------------------------
As mentioned previously, this episode plotline is similar to an episode of Fresh Precure where a hero and mascot switch bodies. What makes this one different though is that this episode is mainly from the mascot's POV as we see her adapt to human life and make a mess out of it. Candy's oblivious innocence to the whole deal doesn't make the situation as dire and it really is played up for laughs, and makes for a nice Miyuki and Candy development episode.

What also makes this one different is that this is the first time we see a mascot fighting. While it came at the expense of another fight where they do it as a team, the fight and transformation sequence we get makes for something different. This was also seen in Fresh, but that was more of an imagine spot.

Next episode is a Yayoi episode, as she's evidently gonna be transferring schools.

The thing about next episode is even if she did transfer, she could just use the bookshelf thing to meet up with everyone at any other time. I get what there trying to do though, since they want to keep everyone together.

*Spoilers for Cure Suite*

Episode 15

Really liked how Sieren disguised herself as Cure Muse and tricked Hibiki and Kanade into giving them their morphers. It was a good emotional struggle and the real Cure Muse coming to save the day.

I can't remember which episode it was: But loved the one where Hibiki failed her test that one was hilarious especially with the monster of the day being made from her failed test paper and blasting her when she got an answer wrong. I though it was really odd though how they did made it a serious moment with the tri crescendo I felt it did not fit the tone of the episode.

I quite enjoyed the two parter where Seiren was tricking Hummy into giving her the notes and that Hummy still believed in her. Aphrodite makes her first appearance to the Cures and also tells Hummy if you believe in Sieren your feelings will reach her somehow.

As Serien is about to sing the song of sadness. I thought it was touching that any negative Seiren says Hummy puts a good spin on it which breaks her slowly. Then Hummy gets in grave danger and then Sieren transforms into Cure Beat which of course usually occurs is a massive beat down but instead Sieren is not sure what she has become and runs away after talking to Muse.

Cure Muses reveal: Ako wow what a good choice for Cure Muse I would say shes the only one that could really be her. But of course the shocking thing is that shes is actually the daughter of Aphrodite and Mephisto. Also Otokichi being revealed to be her grandpa. I also liked how Hibiki and Kandace though about the cymbals on the ears of Seiren and noticed them on Mephisto and putting two and two together that he was being control by something else.

So judging by the opening of this episode it looks to have Aphrodite as the next person being controlled by Noise thats pretty cool.

All in all I will agree though this show has an issue with pacing. Seiren's Arc was way too long and the identity of Cure Muse to be revealed.

Smile Precure Episode 9: April Foolish Fools who April Foolishly dreams of April Foolish dreams

We see what looks a Superhero telling somebody to wake up, but it's just an alarm clock of Yayoi, as she turns it off and going back to sleep. After her up-to-this-point-non-existent Mom says that Pancakes are for breakfast, and she immediately goes downstairs to find no Pancakes. Her Mom reminds her that it's April Fools Day (Pretty clever with the airing schedule), and mentions that it's all good fun to joke around as long as they make it clear its a joke. After testing it on her mom with joking about having a boyfriend, she prepares for her day of joking.

After our OP which showcases New Stage Footage of the Smile's and the movie-only Cure Echo, we cut to the Bad End Kingdom with Red Ogre drawing himself. Majorina wonders if this is a new thing for him, and Red Ogre comments its April Fools. Wolfrun comes in and notes that the world will be in a Bad End, so the joke will end up begin a reality. This confuses Red Ogre, who decides that he'll trick the humans with all his lies for today. At school, Miyuki and Candy meet with Yayoi, who decides to start her joke. Miyuki and Candy get freaked out when Yayoi says she'll transfer schools tomorrow. She turns around and pats herself on the back on a joke well sprung, but she turns around and finds Miyuki and Candy gone.

Miyuki runs off to Akane and immediately blurts out what happened. Akane gets freaked out but decides to keep it a secret, citing that she used to be a transfer student and knows how it feels. Yayoi comes up to them while the two act strangely and comfort her before she can tell them truth. Before she can further tell them, homeroom has begun. After homeroom, Miyuki and Akane relay to Nao and Reika, and they too get surprised and later comfort her. Not wanting to hurt them after all their feelings and comfort, Yayoi can't bring herself to tell them it was a joke.

After music class, Yayoi looks at her Smile Pact and decides to tell them it was a joke, but they continue to comfort her before she can do so. Reika takes her looking at her Smile Pact as a sign that she's worried about Precure duties, and deduces that she blames herself for the splitting of the group, and all 4 vow to make up and work extra hard for her leaving. All the while Yayoi continues to freak out about the joke going too far. Later at the school gazebo during lunch, all are gathered except Yayoi, and they take it as a sign that it's hard for her to eat with them before leaving. Reika comes up with a plan, and then we see Yayoi at the school roof, deciding that if she can't tell them herself, she'll convey the message to them via a manga drawing. To her misfortune, the wind blows her drawing away. Miyuki suddenly appears and takes her to a classroom where Reika uses the Cherry Blossom decor to welcome her and there's a farewell sign and her classmates to wish her goodbye, totally freaking out Yayoi. Outside, Red Ogre arrives, and he catches Yaoyi's drawing.

Reika says that things must be as normal for her as possible before she leaves, so they say they'll hold a farewell party and has all the flowers from the school garden picked and put in a bouquet, and a paper full of farewell messages as a sign of friendship. All of her friends gathered, applause from the class, and the idea of what might happen if she breaks the joke to them after all they did finally gets to Yayoi, and she runs off crying. When the group finds her, they apologize for it, taking the crying the wrong way. But before Yayoi can explain, Red Ogre activates the Bad End, making the evil number meter go up one notch, 9/22. The group checks if Yayoi is OK before all transforming. Red Ogre then summons an Akanbe out of a roller.

They prepare to defend themselves from a punch from the Akanbe, but at the last moment, Red Ogre lies and the Akanbe kicks instead, knocking them off guard. They then prepare for a roller attack, but Red Ogre lies again and they get punched. While 4 of them berate Red Ogre for lying, Yayoi suddenly gets more and more uncomfortable, especially when Red Ogre, having fun, calls out Yayoi for lying by showing them her lost manga. The 4 ask Yaoyi to get it off her chest if she really has something to say, and Miyuki assures her that no matter what happens, she'll still be her friend, especially since Yayoi was so kind to her when Miyuki first transferred. Yayoi apologizes and tells them that it was all an April Fools lie, which apparently they forgot. Akane berates Miyuki for falling for it so quickly, while Miyuki counters back that she fell for it easily too. They all thank her for telling them straightforward, prompting fresh tears from Yayoi.

Red Ogre and the Akanbe meanwhile get bored and sleepy, asking them when they're done so they can continue whooping their asses and just offhandedly throwing off the lie like it was nothing, apparently pissing off Yayoi. As the 4 defend from another attack, Yayoi is motivated by her friends kindness, gets her second wind, and kicks the Akanbe in the face. Yayoi then uses her special attack, destroying the Akanbe and obtaining the Pudding Decor, their 9th Decor overall. Later, Yayoi tells the class it was a like, and Miyuki also apologizes for getting too hasty on the news, while she and Akane continue to shift the blame on one-another. While the class is relieved and begin to crowd Yayoi to ask her to continue drawing, Akane draws the other 3 aside for something. After the class disperses, the 4 begin to act like they don't like her anymore, freaking Yayoi out. April Fools. By lying it means they still love her, making Yayoi cry again, Akane remarking that's the Yayoi everyone knows.
---------------------------------
The episode preview last week did not mention this plot point being tied with April Fools, so it was a nice twist of it being kept in the dark until the actual episode. Something like Sailor Moon has shown that heroes not going to the same school can work, not to mention that they still have their secret base. So it was nice they waited till the episode itself for the April Fools twist.

As for the plot of the episode, the hijinks was blamed all around on the over-reacting Miyuki, and whilen she did apologize for her behavior. It would've been better if she got her comeuppance. A nice, fun episode, this one.

Next episode seems to be an Akane episode, regarding her Okonomiyaki restaurant.

Smile Precure Episode 10: Parents exist in this show?!?

We start out with a guy attempting to lift up a crate in a backroom, only to suddenly feel extremely uncomfortable. The man calls out for Akane, and its revealed to be her father. Akane asks what's the buzz, and freaks out. Akane's dad seems to be out of action and is bedridden because of a bad back. In the hospital Akane and her magically appearing mother and brother question what'll happen to the restaurant, when Akane decides that she will handle it.

After going back to the original OP sequence, we get to the Bad End Kingdom where Wolfrun seems to have a rumbly in this tumbly. His nose picks up a smell that's emanating from Majorina's cauldron. Wolfrun wonders if the medicine she's making is appetizing, but the concoction consisting of lizard's tail, pig drool and frog flatulence turns him away. Majorina shoos him away with an advertisement for Okonomiyaki, which satiates Wolfrun's hunger as he rushes off to get some food and get his ass kicked.

At school, the other 4 cures hear about Akane's self-promotion has head of her family's resto. The easily impressed Miyuki and Yayoi are easily impressed while Akane takes it in stride, and only worries about an upcoming event on Saturday where the neighborhood association (and a Culinary critic according to Reika) will be dining for dinner. When the Cures and Candy comment how they really like the Okonomiyaki and have a craving for it, Akane tells them to meet them at the restaurant later.

At said resto, the 4 watch Akane grill some Okonomiyaki. Reika suddenly takes notice of the restaurants name and sees that part of Akane's name is part of it. Akane explains that the resto was started when she was born and her parents wanted to take care of it as much as they wanted to take care of Akane. Miyuki and Candy can't take it anymore and just want to eat, and Akane shows off with a family trademark wrist-flick to flip and grill all 4 Okonomiyaki at once. While the 4 chow and enjoy, Akane's younger brother named Genki comes in and messes with Akane in front of her friends. When Genki takes a bite though, he mentions that it's good but not exactly like their Dad's. Akane then takes a bite herself and agrees, saying that the critic would want her Dad's specifically.

While Akane mopes and wonders what went wrong, Genki puts in that their Dad has a "secret kick" for his Okonomiyaki and Akane vows to find it, while the other 4 agree to help. While Akane, Nao and Reika discuss about how opposite tastes help each other and share their own family recipes, Miyuki, Yayoi and Candy overhear and try to make the secret ingredient, first by using the recently obtained Pudding decor...only to get an oversized pudding onto the grill. One still-montage of cooking and baking later, Akane is still not satisfied with the results, while the 4 and an over-stuffed Candy ponder about that "special kick" that brings the best out of the Okonomiyaki. Akane mentions about how she really respects her Dad and how his Okonomiyaki satisfies everyone who eats it. Akane decides to skip all of this work and goes straight to her Dad to ask about it. Meanwhile a moon-walking Wolfrun goes to a restaurant only to be kicked out because "he would not take off his mask". This does not discourage him, as a smell suddenly catches his nose.

After our Eyecatch gets a new variation after 5 episodes, Akane is at the hospital and asks her Dad about what makes his Okonomiyaki so awesome. Her Dad seems to be in a foul mood though, as he remarks how she was so confident and yet now is struggling. After her Dad tells her absolutely nothing, Akane leaves in a huff but quickly regains her composure with her friends. Though Nao reminds her that the dinner party is in three days, Akane does not lose hope and decides to put her nose to the grindstone. The montage of buying ingredients, working late at night, studying cookbooks in school and taste-testing still gets her nowhere as Akane begins to feel discouraged. Her Mom, noticing her slump, take her aside and begins to reminisce of the first time Akane made her own Okonomiyaki when she was a cold and the younger Akane made something to make her better. Present Akane is flabbergasted at how her disastrously burnt cooking could've tasted so good to her Mom, but the Mom still stands that to her, it was delicious. Not at all convinced, Akane leaves the room and says that she just wants to make it like her Dad would.

The next day at some food event, Miyuki, Yayoi, Genki and his Mom are manning an Okonomiyaki stall to promote their restaurant while Akane continues to work. Genki is then called away by Akane to taste more samples cooked by her, Reika and Nao. In the sky, Wolfrun's tumbly gets even more rumbly as he hasn't eaten anything for three days. The smell of Okonomiyaki elicits a huge WOW from him, and rather than just going down and taking the Okonomiyaki, he activates a Bad Ending, bringing the evil number meter into the two digits. After they transform, Wolfrun says nothing will get in the way between him and his food, and summons an Akanbe out of a brush and jar.

Akane gets immobilized first, getting stuck in glue sauce, while Nao quickly shields everyone with an umbrella. All while, Wolfrun gobbles up the freshly cooked Okonomiyaki, which seems to be making the Akanbe stronger as everyone else but Reika is immobilized by glue sauce. Akane is at first delighted by how Wolfrun remarks that the Okonomiyaki is good, but Wolfrun quickly kills the mood saying that all food is just the same. This reminds Akane of her cooking woes and again worries about the "special kick", which Wolfrun quickly laughs at for something so pointless eliciting so much worry. Wolfrun continues to gloat at how everything, even failed food, always will reach the stomach in the end.

Miyuki snaps and tells him off, that the food was not a failure, and it still tasted delicious. This seems to give Akane an epiphany; as long as you put your heart and soul into your cooking, it will always taste delicious. Wolfrun, not one to tolerate random realizations in fights, orders the Akanbe to finish them off. Akane tells Reika to aim her special attack at her, confusing Reika, but she does it anyway. In an aura of flame, Akane uses the ice-turned water to melt the sauce from her, as she rushes in a blaze to the Akanbe, freaking out Wolfrun and making Ken Masters proud as she does a flaming shoryuken to the Akanbe. With the Akanbe stunned, Akane finishes it off with her special attack, obtaining the 10th Cure Decor, the Umbrella Decor. Akane's Okonomiyaki is a hit, delighting the customers, as apparently the critic already gave a good review in-between scenes. Her Dad arrives back at the resto while Akane proudly says she got past that "special kick", and to get even with her Dad, decides to keep it a secret.
-----------------------------------------
This is pretty much the Akane episode I've been waiting for, as the OP made her out to be more into cooking Okonomiyaki as opposed to her just playing volleyball in her debut episode. As a focus episode it didn't disappoint, as this situation can apply in real-life too. Sometimes, even the most secret of ingredients aren't even ingredients at all. The episode also gave the first time of teamwork utilization when Akane used Reika's attack to get out of a sticky situation. Makes me want to see more of this in future episodes.

Next episode is where the Precure's are shrunk, and, judging by the preview, will be a Nao-focus episode.

A slightly different origin story for Cure Peace.

Managed to find a clip of the GoPrecure moment by itself. Pretty lolsy.

-------------------------------------------
Smile Precure Episode 11: Directed by Rick Moranis and Entomophobists

We get our first shot of the episode with what looks like Yayoi admiring some flowers. Akane and Nao wonder what she's up to, and Yayoi shows them a pillbug. Miyuki and Reika remark how small and cute it is, but Nao feels uncomfortable. Even when the Pillbug makes the smallest move, Nao freaks out and backs away tripping. When Nao gets back up, she noticed that she tripped over what appears to be a small hammer, and Miyuki comments how it looks just like the one from the fairy tale "The Inch-High Samurai". Miyuki exposits about how in the story, a very tiny Samurai tried to defeat an ogre but couldn't, until a princess waved the hammer around to make the Samurai grow. Candy, delighted by the prospect of wanting to be bigger, tries waving it around, until suddenly Candy hits it right in Miyuki's face and there's a blinding flash of light. When it clears, they find that Candy has become huge, until they quickly realize that they themselves have shrunk. Before Nao can try to think, she suddenly hears a movement behind her.

At the Bad End Kingdom, it appears Majorina is panicking, as it seems she's lost yet another item. Things don't help when Red Ogre nearly hits her trying to squash a bug with his club. Majorina asks him if she's seen her "Turn-Me-Small" and shows him a picture. This jogs his memory, as a while ago, Red Ogre tried to squash the bug with said item, only to throw it away when he fails to. Majorina comments that that item is very helpful in defeating the Cures and tasks Red Ogre with finding it.

Meanwhile, Candy tries to find the Cures, but they can't seem to get Candy's attention as she nearly squashes them flat running around. While the Cures scatter around, Nao suddenly notices a leaf falling on her and discovers a grasshopper, freaking her out. But before she can get the attention of the others, Yayoi sees that Candy is leaving and they give chase, Nao quickly regaining her composure. When Candy jumps over a small puddle, it looks like a lake to the shrunk Cures. They commandeer a leaf and turn it into a boat while Nao paddles with a twig, and freaks out when they pass a Water Strider.

After attempting to climb a mountain of stairs in the middle of an earthquake of football players, they arrive in their classroom and shimmy up some shoelaces to get to a desk. While Yayoi has fun looking at all the enlarged items, Akane and Nao have a fear of heights while traversing between the desks with a ruler, prompting Nao to faint. When they discover that Candy jumped out of the window and into the garden, Reika uses the Umbrella Decor to give them umbrellas and float down. Miyuki finally manages to get get Candy's attention, but her voice gives off a blast of wind that blows them away from their umbrellas and land into the garden.

When they see the same grasshopper from before, Nao quickly panics and runs away, only to run into caterpillar and run away again, to run into more bugs again. When they finally ask what Nao's problem is, Reika comments that Nao obviously isn't good with bugs. Akane and Miyuki are surprised at this, while Yayoi comments how some bugs, like a Ladybug that just came, are cute. When the Ladybug gives chase to Nao, she attempts to climb the stem of a blade of grass only to fall and land into another bed of pillbugs. This proves too much for her and she faints. Meanwhile, Majorina is still looking for her lost item only to run into the same policeman as before when she lost her body-switch rings. While the policeman attempts small talk with Majorina, she notices Candy running around with her item and gives chase.

Back at the garden, Nao wakes up in a bed of leaves with the other 4 watching over her. Akane says that its thanks to the pillbugs from earlier (Which are nearby) that she didn't suffer any grievous injuries. Nao naturally gets scared out of her wits, especially when one of the baby pillbugs goes towards her. The baby however drops off a leaf from its mouth, Miyuki and Reika interpreting this as the pillbug being worried about her. As the baby goes back to its family, Nao is seemingly touched by this and thanks it. While Miyuki and Yayoi have fun with the bugs going about their activities, Reika consoles Nao about how even bugs have their own daily lives and live together in the garden like their own city.

Majorina meanwhile gives chase to Candy nearby. When Majorina fails to catch her, she crash lands into the garden, right where the Cures can see her ugly mug. Majorina is surprised and Candy finally finds them too. Majorina, delighted about how the situation played right into their hands, activates a Bad Ending, getting the negative energy this time from all the bugs (To Nao's surprise), as the notch on the evil number meter is raised again. Vowing to protect the bugs, the group transforms.

The Akanbe that is summoned from a flower however is also small, but still bigger than the Cures. The Akanbe goes on the offensive, shooting flower missiles. Though the Cures get some hits on it, the Akanbe's blind shooting of its missiles is destroying the surrounding garden, and effectively, the bugs home. Though the Cures are shocked by this destruction, Majorina doesn't care about simple bugs and eggs on the Akanbe to continue. When a missile is shot at one of the bugs, Miyuki takes the brunt of the blast.

Nao, seeing this and then noticing the baby pillbug drowning in its sorrows after remembering how it helped her, snaps and kicks the Akanbe right in Majorina's face. Nao says even though she may be afraid of them, she realizes that they too have lives and not just some simple creatures. She gets her second wind (no pun intended) and manages to dodge or kick back the incoming missiles. Motivated, the other Cures work together, attacking the missiles or using discarded Soda cans to hit back at the Akanbe. Stunned, Nao sees her chance and uses her special attack to destroy the Akanbe. Having had enough of being defeated, Majorina pouts, and discovers that the force from her pouting is stunning the Cures. She realizes that even without an Akanbe she can defeat them, and grabs the hammer from Candy. She misses however and accidentally causes the the Cures to grow back again. Outnumbered, Majorina retreats.

While Nao observes the bugs getting back to their lives, she catches the obtained Decor and brings their decor count to 11. Candy however notices that three of the bugs have appeared and Candy listens, saying that the bug give their thanks. Surprised at Candy's ability to talk to bugs, they remark about how bugs are a lot similar to them then they thought. When Akane asks Nao if she's cool with bugs now, Nao at first says she's a little OK, but freaks out again when the ladybug lands on her nose as she runs away with Flintstones sound effects. Reika comments how they can't immediately force it on her, as they watch Nao continue to run around and forget the entire moral of the episode.
---------------------------------
I felt the episode did very good....until the ending. It's especially jarring how Nao risked her life to fight for the bugs and protect them, yet revert back to her bug-fearing ways in the end. I suppose that it is a natural reaction and that it takes time for something like this to set in, but the episode could've handled the ending better, like one of the others helping her and calming her down to make her at least be neutral towards the bugs. In that regard, the message of the episode gets dragged down because of this.

The fight though was good. This time the Cures had a lot more action, fighting the Akanbe melee or using the environment against it.

Next episode seems to be a Candy and Reika episode. But it also appears to be a next advancement episode as the Cures get what appears to be an addition to their outfits.

Smile Precure Episode 12: Smile Precure, Tiara Mode!

We begin with the Cures on the roof of the school building. Yayoi shows them a picture she drew and the others praise her. Candy inquires what it is and the others explain it's a guidemap for an upcoming class trip to Kyoto and (to Akane's immense delight) Osaka. While the others happily talk about all the shopping, eating and bonding they'll do, Reika quickly reminds them that the trip will first and foremost be a learning experience. Before Candy can even be excited about going, Miyuki thanks her for looking after the house, to Candy's outrage. That night at home Miyuki talks in her sleep looking forward to the trip. Candy meanwhile, calls up Pop through the Decor Decor. Pop wonders what's up, and Candy related all her troubles about how she's being left out. Pop reminds her about her mission, but Candy fell asleep through his whole speech.

At the Bad End Kingdom, the 3 lackeys play cards, with Wolfrun winning. However their game is interrupted by Joker, who comments at all the Bad energy they've gathered the past 11 escapades. Joker also brings up the subject of the Precure and remarking how though they are. Seeing the 3 deny that they're asses are being routinely handed to them, Joker mentions off handedly how they won't be needed "these". "These" turn out to be Blue Noses, very different from the Red Noses that the 3 have been utilizing so far. According to Joker, these Blue Noses that summon Akanbe (which for some reason are said to be weaker) are not made from Cure Decor, meaning that the Precure attacks are useless against them. While the 3 relish in their new weapons and argue about who will be fighting this time, Joker goes outside and wonders how, with the 3 using the new weapons, he will find the item that can supposedly grant wishes, called the Miracle Jewel.

Meanwhile in school, Reika discusses with the class about the free time that'll be spent in Osaka, while the class debates and argues about what to do. Reika, in the chaos, tries and fails to brings order to the class, and Candy, seeing Reika having trouble, pops out of Miyuki's bag and yells at the top of her voice to bring order. Reika, quickly covers up Candy and apologizes. Later on in class, groups and group leaders are being discussed. While some want Reika to be leader, Candy pops out again and loudly proclaims she agrees, causing the group to cover her up and act inconspicuous again. It happens again and again, as Candy constantly blows her cover with her suggestions and the group trying to act normal.

Later, Candy is pouting, remarking she wants to join in on the fun too. The Cures prepare for the trip by heading to their Secret Base in the Mysterious Library, one of the things being done is making duplicates of a guidebook with Yayoi's drawing. Candy, once again wanting to help, accidentally knocks over a coffee mug and ruins the guidebooks. While the rest are saddened, they quickly get to work, and Candy, further discouraged, leaves, with Reika noticing. At a park fountain, Candy is down in the dumps when Reika arrives. Candy says that all she wants to do is help and be like the others, but she's just a useless failure of a fairy. Reika tries to console her that Candy did in fact help her in class a while ago, but Candy is not at all consoled and, yelling she's a failure, flees again. On a nearby roof, Candy continues to mope but a nearby Wolfrun quickly snaps her out of her thoughts.

Wolfrun notices how Candy is depressed and says that she won't be useless for long, if there's nobody to be useful to. Wolfrun shows her the Blue Nose and how it'll spell doom for the Cures. Candy tries to run away, saying she'll be useful by telling them about this, but she is quickly captured by Wolfrun. Wolfrun leaves Candy in her cage while he encounters the group a food store buying stuff for their trip. Wolfrun immediately summons the Blue Nosed Akanbe, and activated a Bad Ending, increasing the notch on the number meter, and the Cures transform. Things begin immediately as all 5 rush forward and punch the Akanbe. However, the Akanbe is not fazed. Miyuki then tries to use her special attack, but nothing works. Despite protesting from Reika, Akane, Yayoi and Nao try their special moves, and nada.

Wolfrun tells them about the Blue Noses, and the group is in disbelief. All but Reika are subdued when the Akanbe gets them trapped in bubble capsules, with Reika trying to ward them off, and Candy attempting to get out of her cage. Reika tries to finish it with her using her special attack, and while she fights smart and aims at the ground instead (Freezing the Akanbe), she's totally spent. Before they can be finished off, Candy drops out of the sky and lands at the Cures. The group implores to Candy to give them advice, but Candy, to her sadness, has nothing, prompting more useless taunts from Wolfrun, and causing Candy to cry. Reika, enraged, tells Wolfrun off that Candy's desperately trying to help them all day, which doesn't affect Wolfrun and making him continue remarking about the time wasted on helping somebody so useless. The Cures continue to berate Wolfrun, saying that they owe everything to Candy and will continue to help her because she's her friend.

Candy, shocked by all the support, shouts that she'll help them no matter what, and, in a rage, shoots out a beam of light that produces 5 different colored jewels for the group. Wolfrun orders the Akanbe to finish them off, and the group puts the jewels in the Decors. With a flash, their attire is slightly changed with Tiara's and golden bands now donning them. With a cry of "Precure Rainbow Healing!", a massive technicolor blast is shot out, completely annihilating the Akanbe. Wolfrun retreats, cursing Joker for leaving out details. As the group hugs Candy and thanks and questions her for that unknown power, a lone figure watches from the sky. Joker observed the whole thing, and says that the white light and the fairy may be clues in locating the Miracle Jewel.

As the group walks home, they wonder about the Blue Noses, and how they didn't obtain a Cure Decor, and that they're now more powerful. Miyuki says that they all came out in the end because of the teamwork of their group of 6. Candy, delighted that she was able to help out and be a part of the group, goes off with Miyuki as she says they'll prepare for the school trip together.
-----------------------------
So yeah, we've got a lot of new developments for her, a new team powerup, a new kind of Akanbe, mention of an item that will probably be important later on in the show, and for the first time, no Cure Decor was obtained. The story of Candy and her inferiority complex, I probably might have gotten invested in, if it weren't for the fact that she and Miyuki had an episode a while back. But to be fair, that situation applied solely to school and personal lives, while the stakes were higher in this as it applied to Precure as well. Remains to be seen how much more the status quo will be shaken up in the coming episodes.

The tiara powerup looks rather standard, but that probably could just be an interim thing. It doesn't, for starters, look like what is shown in the OP sequence where we briefly see the Cure's Super forms in the last part.

Next episode will carry on from this one, as it details their escapades in Kyoto, and will be a Miyuki episode.

watched all of Heartcatch. Absolutly loved the series, it gave alot more than i expected. just in case spoiler alert.

The way the desertorians are made of feelings gave it way more weight than smile. Where as Smile has to force the spirit it perform a finisher, blossom and Co were legitimatly at the end of their thether. Plus it gave the storys alot more heart to every one of them, since they were fighting for someone not to just destroy the monster.

I really liked how they actually fought the monster and Sunnackys, i don't think smile have properly fought yet, just change and finisher most of the time.

I loved Sunshine. The foreshadowing of Tsubomi telling the little girl we only get sunflowers in summer was great especially since that was when she turned up. her character was really cool with an interesting complexity. I was really happy in 36 when she got to really have a go with her girly side. Plus potpourri is the coolest fairy.

Moonlight was awesome, so cool and powerful, she had a lot of heart in her story all the way through.

Blossom and marine were an awesome team, Plus you really saw them grow together as friends during the series. plus they were roughly even in focus, I remember watching a few episodes thinking theres been too much blossom and then bam, three erika episodes.

The music was really well done, Op was really good, EDs were great especially the first one. I really like how they introduced the battle theme in the school fair episode, and them brought it back. It was very clever plus I really love Heart goes on, its got as much kick as Kiva's Supernova.

The ending of the series was really incredible (spoilers), marine/sunshines mirrored fights, heart goes on in the final battle, and then that final fight, wow that was a really clever way to finish the series the choice to give Dune a heart made all the difference.. Mugen's eyes were really one of the most beautiful things in anime.

Its made me look down on Smile a bit, but its rocketed straight to one of my top animes or tv shows ever.

Smile Precure Episode 13: Bad luck episode= 13th episode. Mind Blown.

Taking off from the last episode, the heroes and their class are on their class trip on the train. Everyone is looking forward to it, but Miyuki is beside herself with excitement and eager to join in with Akane and Yayoi in their activities. Her excitement is paramount, she doesn't even get angry at Candy for gobbling all her snacks. Later, the group arrives in Kyoto, with Miyuki marveling over the Kyoto Tower, and later the Rokuonji temple. After Reika gives us a history lesson on the temple, Candy pops out and wants to join in, and in the process of keeping her in check, Miyuki falls into the water, later being forced to wear her PE clothes.

Her embarrassment doesn't last long, as she excitedly heads to a fortune teller with the Smile's in tow. The other 4 open their papers, receiving good luck-uncertain luck, but Miyuki gets apparently really bad luck. In a pretty hilarious scene, she tries to reassure herself with a hint of a slipping sanity that things shouldn't be that bad after being scolded on the train, and falling into the pond, and she quickly gains her composure...only to be crapped upon by a bird. Later, at the Togetsukyo Bridge, they marvel over it while Reika continues to be a walking guidebook. When Miyuki attempts to get a picture of them at the bridge, the resulting picture has some form of error, either Miyuki being cut out of the picture, or it being blurry. Picture after picture is taken, but they all end up bad, and to make things worse, her camera battery runs out, to Miyuki's immense frustration.

Miyuki continues to have bad luck throughout the visit, from getting it over the head with souvenir ornaments, to kids bumping into her and getting her ice cream all over her face, to her souvenir for her non-existant Mom breaking. At the hotel they're staying at, Miyuki is downcast over her bad day, and in an attempt to cheer her up, Akane and Nao start a pillow fight. It ends in disaster however as a pot of coffee they accidentally knock over and caught by Miyuki, is poured all over their teacher. Later that night, after apparently a long scolding from their teacher, the group talks, with Miyuki blaming herself. Akane lightens the mood with girly sleepover talk about crushes, and asking Miyuki to spill who she likes. She admits it's Peter Pan, and freaks out and makes a ruckus in embarrassment, just in time for their coffee-laden teacher to come back in and make them go to sleep.

At the Bad End Kingdom, Red Ogre is reading a book on how demon's attacked a village, which coincidentally is also being shown on the TV with Kyoto. Taking inspiration, Red Ogre decides to act out what the book does and heads to Kyoto. The next day, Miyuki takes the good weather as a sign things will be better today. At the Kiyomizu temple, Akane and Nao ponder at the leaning stage, remarking that if someone were to trip, they'd just keep rolling down and down. At that exact moment, Miyuki trips and she ends up rolling down and down, just in time for Nao to catch her. Things get worse in a montage of bad luck, with Miyuki tired out by the end of it. Despite worries from the group, Miyuki thinks nothing of it, just as they arrive in Gion. Yayoi has her camera at the ready, wanting to catch some Maikos. At Candy's suggestion, they utilize the lipstick decor and Candy dresses up as a Maiko. Reika comments that the Maikos aren't there every day and they'd have to encounter them by luck. Miyuki, distraught, says that it's likely her fault there aren't any Maikos to be found, which the group dismisses as over thinking.

Red Ogre meanwhile, attempts to frighten people by his presence, but they think he's just a tourist attraction. Though at first flattered by his picture being taken, he quickly snaps and activates a bad end, raising the notch on the evil meter. The Cure's quickly arrive on the scene, just as Miyuki's fortune paper slips out of her hands and is caught by Red Ogre. Noticing it, he has a good laugh at how the Cures have terrible luck. Miyuki is put off by his guffaws, and is even more discouraged when a Blue Akanbe is summoned out of the fortune paper. After the group transforms, a missile is shot at Nao, who redirects it...to Miyuki by accident. Later the Akanbe uses its weapon to hit Yayoi, which breaks, and the broken top lands right at Miyuki. Red Ogre continues laughing at her atrocious luck. Akane attempts to use her special attack, but it does nothing, confirming that their moves are useless against the Blue Nosed Akanbe. At the urging of Candy, they attempt to use Rainbow Healing and go into Tiara Mode, but a stomp from the Akanbe's food knocks Miyuki's Smile Pact from her hand and plunge into the river.

Miyuki jumps in trying desperately to find it, but too late, the Cures are hit by a large cannon blast from the Akanbe. Miyuki, distraught, thinks its her fault, but comes back just in time to block a finishing blow from the Akanbe. Miyuki apologizes to everyone, thinking her having fun made her overcome her bad luck, which must have been rubbed off to everyone else, but the group says that they weren't caught up in anything, saying that they still had fun, and that them being in a pinch is not because of bad luck, and that as long as they're together, they'll always have good luck. Almost in response, Miyuki's lost Smile Pact activates, the group gets their second wind and pushes back the Akanbe, they go into Tiara Mode, and obliterate the Akanbe. Red Ogre retreats, cursing the uselessness of the Blue Noses.

Later, Miyuki thanks the group for being with her during her bad luck crisis, but they all have a good laugh when they look back at her misfortunes. Miyuki is at first annoyed, but then laughs too. Just then some Maikos show up, and Miyuki wonders why when she still has bad luck. Reika responds that with smiles come good fortunes and that all of them having a laugh together must have overcome her good luck. Miyuki, reminded of her own words, is happy, and they end up with their picture with the Maikos.
----------------------------------
I wonder if it was some sort of joke on the writer's part to incorporate an episode of bad luck right when it reaches the 13th? That's a pretty funny in-joke. The episode itself I felt was...just OK. Nothing much comes of it, it's just an escapade episode in Kyoto mixed in with some brief history lessons and Miyuki's misfortunes. The only significant thing I can think of is that once again the Blue Nose fails, which makes me think that Joker has an ulterior motive for setting the 3 generals up with them.

Next episode continues from this as the group heads to Osaka, with what appears to be Akane, Nao and Reika gaining another mode.

Smile Precure Episode 14: Precure gives you wings

After a flashback of last week's unlucky episode, the group arrives at Osaka. Nao and Reika are pumped to eat all of the Osaka delicacies, and Akane takes it upon herself to show them the good restos. After their class is divided into different tour groups, they begin their tour at Osaka Castle where Reika gives a history lesson. While Akane, Nao and Reika are off touring, Miyuki and Yayoi get separated from them. Candy, wanting to get more into the spirit of the trip, begs Miyuki to be dolled up. Right at the moment the other 3 discover they've been separated, Candy's ear hair is all done, and they discover too they've been separated, lost in Osaka.

At the Bad End Kingdom Majorina is in the mood to eat candy, but when she discovers her stash is all gone, she breaks the candy jar in anger. At that moment a TV report from Osaka tells of Natto Gyoza candy, and Majorina decides to head there to get some. Meanwhile, the separated group tries to find each other. While Miyuki and Yayoi panic, some locals who are visiting Osaka castle take notice of them and give them candy as a welcome present. Yayoi, taking inspiration, notes it's like an RPG and all they have to do is talk to people and get information about Osaka for their own solo tour. Outside the castle, the other three try to find them, but Nao and Reika decide to just let it pass, thinking that they'll meet up with them at the next tourist spot.

Miyuki and Yayoi see then next spot is Nakanoshima, but they can't read the map. Just then the same group of local ladies bumps into them and they take them out to eat noodles, with the ladies telling them afterwords they should go to Nakanoshima by boat. Akane, Reika and Nao meanwhile continue to find the others, but no luck, Nao really wanting to eat. Just then they bump into the same local ladies who tells them that they ran into Miyuki and Yayoi and that they're heading to Nakanoshima. But before the ladies tell the other three to go there by boat, they run off. On said boat, Miyuki and Yayoi are admiring the Osaka surroundings as more local ladies give them more candy. Unbeknownst to them, on the shoreline near where they are, a pooped out Akane, Nao and Reika are taking the same path, tired, hungry and annoyed that they can't relish Osaka more. Later, the three run into their other classmates who tells them that Miyuki and Yayoi were heading to the zoo, just as Nao collapses in massive hunger.

Just to tease, Miyuki and Yayoi step out of an Okonomiyaki shop, stuffed. They see a Takoyaki stand and want to try some, but they remember that Reika wanted Takoyaki so they decided to hold off on that. Just then, the same local ladies pop up and offer to take them to the zoo, with Akane, Nao and Reika lagging behind and all suffering from hunger. Later when the ladies and the other two part ways, they give Miyuki and Yayoi Natto Gyoza candy. They then spot the Tsuttentaku tower and decide to go at the top...right when Majorina arrives in Osaka. To her frustration, the candy store is all sold out of Natto Gyoza, and after seeing the Precures are in Osaka too, she activates a Bad Ending, making the evil number meter go up another notch. She then creates a Blue Nosed Akanbe out of the Tsuttentaku, which Miyuki and Yayoi are trapped in. The other 3 notice this, and they transform, with Miyuki and Yayoi also transforming.

Because the group is separated, the full roll call is not done. The other 3 attempt to get the other 2 out of the Akanbe by using their special attacks, but it doesn't work. Candy suggests to Miyuki to give the other three Butterfly wings by using the Butterfly decor. It works and the three are granted wings and flight (With Nao uncomfortable due to her fear of bugs). The three fly around and distract it, tiring the Akanbe out, and when Nao flings some candy in the Akanbe's throat, it gets nauseous and it spits Miyuki and Yayoi out. Furious, Majorina lets loose the Akanbe to destroy the city, and the Cures activate Tiara Mode, destroying the Akanbe and making Majorina retreat.

Later, the group is reunited, Nao has a rumbly in her tumbly, they all eat Takoyaki and like it, they get together with their classmates, and their school trip ends on a happy note.
------------------------------------------
At this point I'm getting rather tired of the formulaic episodes, but them's the breaks. My guess is in a couple of weeks there will be more developments to advance the story further. The episode was just...OK, really, nothing much to talk about. The Butterfly wings add-on, even though it's from a Decor, makes me wonder if they'll continue to be utilized by the group.

Next week is a Mother's Day episode, with Miyuki trying desperately to get a gift for her magically appearing Mom.

I actually just started watching HeartCatch a few weeks ago, before my laptop broke and I got 10 or so episodes in. It truly is awesome and I just can't get enough of that opening or transformation music.

"100% Hero" by Hisako Kanemoto is a good Precure character song.

Listening to it cheers me up and helps me forget there's a completely unrelated anime where another Hisako Kanemoto character gets eaten by aliens.

Huh. What anime is that? Is this person known for making nice things while making really nasty mean-spirited ones?
-----------------------------
So yeah, been watching Smile, but really, things have been moving slow. Though there are some rather nice character episodes for the cures specifically, like the mother's day and father's day episode, things haven't really been going anywhere till about the recent 4 episodes; all the Decor is obtained, Candy is captured by Joker, Pierrot is revived, the 3 generals get Super Forms and the Cures get their Super Forms, dubbed "Princess Forms" to defeat a still-weak Pierrot. To make matters worse, the activation of the Princess Form forced all the Decor to be scattered and they have to gather them again to revive the Queen of Marchenland.

All this, and there is not a sign of any 6th member, made more evident by how the recent Smile movie reveal only shows the 5 Smile's and no 6th in sight. Hoping things will pick up later on.

Also gonna leave this here, an episode where a comedy duo named Fujiwara guest starred.

Wow, just watched a few fight scenes and transformations of Heartcatch Precure and it looks pretty stunning? It's like a battle anime targeted at girls! The art style and animation remind me of the most recent series of Casshern - is it made by the same studio?

Pretty Cure is made by Toei. When it wants to Pretty Cure does fight scenes beautifully.

The first seasoon actually shared a prominant staff member with Dragon Ball Z. I want to say a director, but not positive.

^yeah, the director of season one was Daisuke Nishio

I actually just started watching the first season. I'm liking how it points out the weird stuff required by the genre.

They have the same character designer, Yoshihiko Umakoshi. Umakoshi also did character designs for Saint Seiya Omega, you can pretty much always recognize that style when you see it.q
