Ghostbusters Thread: Movies, Toons, Video games, Comics, and more.

I don't know how many times we've heard it, and the upcoming video game been pushed up to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film, it looks like a third GB is not too far fetched after all. But still I'm taking it with a grain of salt. There's more chances for MEG and Jason vs. Freddy 2 being made than GB3. Read on: GHOSTBUSTERS 3' OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED!

Who you gonna call? Columbia Pictures has apparently heard the fans call for a third film in the horror-comedy franchise GHOSTBUSTERS as they have finally, finally set the long-gestured sequel in motion. Even though a script is being written with the intent of bringing back all four original busters, the article reports that reaching an agreement is still going to be a factor. Read on for the story and watch for updates as soon as a draft of the screenplay is delivered.

Columbia Pictures is getting serious about scaring up a new installment of its blockbuster "Ghostbusters" franchise.

The studio has set "The Office" co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

Studio would not comment on the development and has been mum on recent rumors that there was interest in making another installment of the franchise.

The scribes just wrote "Year One," a comedy that was directed by Ramis. Ramis with Aykroyd wrote the first two installments of the films. Ivan Reitman directed both the 1984 original and the sequel that was released in 1989. The close proximity between the writers and original Ghostbuster Ramis is evidence that the ghost chasers have sparked to the idea of returning.

"Ghostbusters" was Columbia's highest grossing film ever, until it was beaten by "Men in Black" and then "Spider-Man." An attempt to make a third installment of the franchise was stymied in the dealmaking stage. Sources said so much gross was pledged to the participants that it was next to impossible for the studio to make any money on a third installment.

No deals will be made with the original cast until the script is ready, but the gross percentage will certainly be an issue. Sony has a standing policy not to allow more than 25% of first dollar gross out the door.

The scribes, who are Emmy-nominated for their work on "The Office," just set up another picture at Columbia, selling their spec script "Bad Teacher" to the studio for Jimmy Miller to produce.

I'm also taking this with a grain of salt. I do recall the announcement of a CGI movie with all the original voices.

I remember hearing that a new video game was gonna be as close to Ghostbusters 3 as we would get. This is quite controversial though. We'll see where it goes.

If I'm not mistaken, this was already discussed here:

But I do like this idea.

no, it hasnt really. a script is in the works, yes. but they are doing so before even asking the original cast if they want to return. frankly I don't think most of them will agree to it.

Bill Murray has stated he doesnt want to do a 3rd film. Rick Morranis didnt even want to do the VA work in the game.

Maybe they should go with an "Extream Ghostbusters" route. Bring in Egon, and the kids from EG. That would be kinda cool. I really liked the series so maybe it could work. Obviously not as good as bringing the whole cast back tho.

Indeed you are correct. I have close ties with terminal reality the company that is creating the game and the game IS Ghostbusters 3. Now ive been hearing rumors of a third film as much as the next guy but honestly until ivan/dan or harold say its happening then its not. The game has been pushed back to 09 for two reasons. One because of the 25th aniversery and two because activision blizzard didnt want to publish the game. Thats why almost everything gb related at comic con was canceld sadly. The game will have a publisher within the next week or so.

Bill Murray owns one fourth of the rights to Ghostbusters, along with Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis, and Dan Akroyd each owning the other three fourths. If he doesn't want one, there won't be one, which is a huge reason why nothings happened with this in almost 20 years.

If this is true, why not let Aykroyd and Ramis write the script?

They've written multiple versions, however, last I heard they were in the midst of a rather large disagreement/argument.

While I suspect this will never truly happen it would be nice and would explaine why the release date was pushed back until next year for the game. Because that would be a ploy to keep Ghost
Busters in the public eye.

this sux we have to wait more now for the game because of interest in GB3, and the anniversary, personally i think they should do a GB3 the actors havnt had much success as of late i mean dan i last saw in a white coats hospital comedy, bill in that submarine movie and egon's actor heck cant remember what he was in the only one to actually get any roles was winston's actor.

and watchin Dan on a vid on that site more or less says he'd love to do another one. so there is hope after all

Yea i was reading about this yesterday. I would love if its actually going to happen. I never really watched the office but i know its a pretty good show. So if this is actually happening i hope the office guys can make a kick butt script. Now the reports from articles i saw about this yesterday was saying the story they are writing is for the originals to be back, but i could see it going either old crew is retiring and training a new group or the film is totally about the old crew and one last hurrah in busting. We will just have to wait and see with more developments on this. As for the whole murray thing yes he was the leading factor in the past for gb3 never getting off the ground, but maybe after returning to the character in the video game has changed his mind. Or maybe they could write murray's character to only be a smaller size role like a cameo appearance in like 3-4 scenes or something. Also if there is to be any new busters in the film it would be great if dana's son oscer is one. He would now be early 20s.

That's funny, I remember discussing it in the other thread because it was stated that all four are returning and the cast of The 40-Year Old Virgin is gonna be in it. But to each his own.

Well the 40yr old virgin crew was just a rumor and seth rogen totally came out and said he isnt apart of any new gb film. Right now the official word we have is the creators of the office are now hired boy columbia/sony to write a script for 3rd film and its expected to unite the original 4 and more likely then not be a retiring/passing the torch story. But yea out of all the original 4 busters, hudson is in the best shape out of the bunch, murray is just really old, dan has gotten a bit fatter but is in fair shape, and harold actually lost alot of weight not to long ago and is now in pretty decent shape for his age.

I've been listening to GB3 rumors for 11+ years now...

I just take 'em all with a major grain of salt...
