Okay, finally got to watching the trailer and dammit if this doesn't actually intrigue me now. I was basically ignoring it before, even with Reynolds attached I just didn't care but nope...trailer got me. Also the Charizard at the end is totally nightmare fuel, that thing was downright scary!

I take back any negative thoughts I had about this film. It looks amazing and I will be there opening day, midnight showing for this it looks so damn good. The pokemon look good without getting too creepy looking like most "realistic pokemon" fan art does. Pikachu looks perfect. Ryan Reynolds just being Ryan Reynolds is fantastic.

If Ken Watanabe doesn't say "let them fight" at least once in this film though, I will be so upset.

That was along my line of thought as well. Any less, they would have been too cartoony, much more and they wouldn't look like recognizable Pokemon and could be fairly disturbing. I think they hit a good balance.

This shit is giving me all sorts of Super Mario Brothers vibes and I am so fucking pumped for it. C'Mon Dinohattan.
Also, the "M2 = Mewtwo" on the trashcan in the poster. I see what they did there. I'm gonna be picking apart this poster for weeks.

Okay I'm sold on the movie. I'm not even that big of a Pokemon fan. I'm Digimon FOR DIGILIFE YO!!!!!!!! I want this to succeed simply because I want to see a proper Pokemon movie based on the anime.

Most likely if this movie is successful we'll get sequels to this obviously but probably nothing else. I don't want to see the mainline game or anime characters in a live-action pokemon film, let these movies do their own thing. It's bad enough people think there will be cameos of Ash, Misty and Brock in this movie, like they really expect them to be here when Detective Pikachu has nothing to do with the anime.

All they really did was put realistic texture on the existing Pokemon designs. They still look very cartoony, and it doesn't blend well standing next to people. Mr. Mime basically looks like a life-size action figure. Can't say I'm surprised though, I figured they would want to keep them looking as close to the originals as possible. It just kind of comes off fan filmish because they want to stick as close to the cartoon as possible without thinking how this will blend in real life.

As creepy as some of those look, they at least blend more with the real world and not just putting fur on.

Those designs look better than the movies. The Pokemon GO trailer had better real life Pokemon.

The fan designs are too realistic, they barely resemble Pokemon and look more like something you'd see in Monster Hunter. They'd maybe work in a gritty Micheal Bay reboot, but not here.

I would have been fine with something like the Go trailer, but then you basically have a modern Who Framed Roger Rabbit, with people interacting with cartoons. What they've gone for is more of a happy medium, where the Pokemon still look cute and recognisable, but are more believable in a real life setting.

It's definitely a bit weird looking, but its eye catching and appealing in its own way.

Pikachu looks perfect I think, and Jigglypuff is fine if maybe a bit too fluffy. Charizard looks great, but Psyduck is weird. Greninja looks really weird too. Maybe it's just the scenes we've been shown. Generally though I think the majority of the pokemon we've seen are weird but doable, whereas our star, Pikachu is thankfully perfect.

I never realised how badly I wanted, no, needed a live-action Pokemon movie in my life, until I stumbled onto the trailer on YouTube, tonight.

All the Pokemon look great, but Gyarados or bust.

Honestly looks like another sub par interpretation of japanese media.

And yet, the end product still looks better than the initial fan art designs regardless of if one of those artists worked on the film. It looks like using the character models, with 3 dimensions, but also realistic texture. Instead of forcing a more real world animal look on the pokemon, which is a go to for many "realistic" fanartists. I prefer the tweaking the game design approach to taking the real thing the pokemon is based on and adding game design aesthetic to it.

Pikachu is awesome but the Mr. Mime really sells it for me.

Even bringing in any artist to do anything they will still have a mandate to do what the producers want. They want classic Pokemon just more realistic. So you had to bring them to the table looking like their classic designed just revamped. You can't sell a pokemon movie if they don't look like they are supposed to.

Have to say it's interesting. From the spoilers posted from here, I think the world building will be quite good. I don't think the maker of Gravity Falls is part of the writing anymore so I wonder if it's gonna keep the balance of mystery and still being family friendly intact. Some of the issues many had for the Power Rangers movie was it wasn't as fun enough for young kids and even the older fanbase so I do hope they are able to find that right tone for this .

At least the titular monsters appear in the trailers.

The Monster Hunter movie doesn't even include a weapon from their games. Look at the set pic.
