Charlie Brooker's 'Black Mirror'

This isn't a particularly well known TV series, but it's definitely worth checking out as far as I'm concerned. It's a mix of drama, sci-fi, satire and a bit of horror.

Basically, they're all about the various effects that technology is having on our lives, and how that's affecting us as people. Brooker notes 'each episode has a different cast, a different setting, even a different reality. But they're all about the way we live now and the way we might be living in 10 minutes' time if we're clumsy'.

Basically, they're all 'what if?' scenarios, and some are actually disturbingly close to reality. There are three episodes per series, each about 45 minutes long. Series 2 has just finished airing, but they can all be found online, or if you like, Series 1 is available on DVD.

One i'd definitely recommend checking out is Series 2 Episode 1 - 'Be right back'. Without wanting to give too much away, the basic plot is about a couple who move into a new house when Ash, the bloke, dies suddenly in a car accident. Martha, his widow is left heartbroken until a friend signs her up for a service which allows her to 'talk' to her deceased over the internet, with Ash's personality replicated based on his past social media output.

Oh, and if you think that's a bit too unrealistic -

I really love this seris, I have the first season on DVD. It's a really surreal and well written series. It's very much a British Twilight Zone starring social media technologies.

Charlie's TV series are fantastic.

This thread is now Charlie Brooker general!

You should check out Touch of Cloth, it's Charlie's funniest series to date.

Wow, there IS a thread for this after all.

"Oh Heaven is a place on Earth..."

Yeah, so how are we all doing with the Netflix-exclusive season? I watched "Nosedive" yesterday and just got through "Shut Up and Dance" (I did hear the artist of Trollface wants to sue people these days for overusing the image in the media)

Only saw one episode of Series 1 (the one with Daniel Kaluuya), but really enjoyed Series 2 and the Christmas special. Am I wrong in thinking that Channel 4 is set to broadcast Series 3 at some point? Otherwise I might be forced to... other means...

No, title. I shall not.

Touch of Cloth is amazing too. I still often quote "go! Get out! Leave! Go away! Go, now! Get out!" e.t.c. XD

Incidentally, just recently saw that Dead Set was on Sky Box-Sets. I watched episode 1 yesterday, it's fab (and as someone who quite enjoyed Big Brother on Channel 4, funny to see). Shall be making my way through the rest over the next week or two, probably.

Glad to have the show back, as it's fantastic.

"Nosedive", "San Junipero", and "Hated in the Nation" are easy favorites of the new season. The latter may trump "The National Anthem" as my favorite of the entire show. They have a somewhat similar tone, and the social commentary reads as almost too real.

In terms of storytelling, Netflix's involvement seems to have done no damage to the show. The one small drawback may be the noticeable accents on the times when they choose to have American characters, sometimes played by British actors. Which would be less noticeable if they weren't also scripted with a number of Britishisms in the dialogue. Not exactly a dealbreaker, as the show is great wherever (and whenever) it's set.

I think I said elsewhere that people had theorized about every "Black Mirror" episode taking place in a cohesive world (or worlds). I like the idea of at least some of them being linked, but not so much that "everything connects". The idea of separate stories all centered around a theme, rather than around plot-points, is worth exploring on its own, without trying to glue every major event together along some giant timeline.

Nevertheless, some viewers have been very busy bees. >_>

Brooker talks a bit about series four here, inckluding one shooting in Iceland, an overly comical one, an indie drama, a crime thriller, and one directed by Jodie Foster

And yea, I think I'm now more accepting of the fact that his Weekly Wipes are all about done with given the schedule he has. See you at Christmas Charlie.

Ok, new season's dropped and I've started watching them

My thoughts on USS Callister

Pretty much a black comedy, nice to see pre-delores William from Westworld in this, and playing once again a character who receives a hard time. At first I thought Daly was going to molest his son when he brought him on board, but instead it was just straight-up murder via the airlock.

A lot of the story flip-flopped on Daly either being in control, and letting control slip. Turning crewmembers into giant monsters was a little too cartoony for my liking, I much preferred the body horror moments when he closed off Cole's mouth and eyes.

I wonder what happened to the real Cole after she was blackmailed? I thought she'd have been a bigger part of the episode alongside her computer avatar, but she just sort of vanishes after ordering the pizza.

Thought the fanservice moment felt shoe-horned in, and Daly really should have known better...at least he sort of acted like everything was off.

Anyhoo, this is more or less an episode with a happy ending...the avatars pilot their way through the upgrade cloud thinking it'll kill them, but it instead just frees them from Daly's modded patch and they're free to explore the data cloud on the other end

I give it a 7/10.

Archangel

Directed by Jodie Foster, this is basically "GPS: Human edition", as we chart the growth of a young lady and her mother becoming obsessed with tracking her every move.

I wish more had been made of the filter system, which prevented her from witnessing childhood traumas like the grandfather's heart attack and having violent scenes depicted to her. Instead it's taken care of early on and only becomes important after the daughter nearly bludgeons the mom to death. You feel slightly sorry for the mother, until she ultimately starts playing god with her daughter's future and prevents her from having a child.

8/10 for me. Some missed opportunities, but fairly strong.

Hang the DJ

At least, a top ten-tier episode for me. Sort of like a straight person's San Junipero with a star-crossed couple ultimately breaking free of the system, only it's revealed at the end they're still part of it and function as their technology does to a whole other level of a world outside of their own. Takes a little while for the twist to sink in though, I was left slightly dumbstruck before I wound up awe-struck, rofl.

It is interesting to find the girl had more sexual experiences displayed than the man, probably just to enforce the fact she goes to feel nothing about those other relationships.

Near the end I thought the twist for the ultimate match would have been when the bloke, Frank, met the woman who'd also been ditched and the two have sex thinking about their preferred partners

10/10

Kirsten Dunst made a barely noticeable cameo in USS Callister

Metalhead

Pretty gripping black and white survival horror story. Not much is ellaborated on as to how this world is in such a state, but the idea that all the lead character goes through is out of a futile attempt to lend an ill child some home comfort shows how even the smallest stakes are the most crucial in this hellish world infested by robotic hunters

7/10

Wow, with what I've seen online in other places, I thought this would be a really happening thread. I really like this show. I love the general concept - Technology, but wrong.

I like the episodes that don't feel too far from the real world, even though all the technology is based on real stuff that is either being developed now, or being planned to be.

I think Hated in the Nation and Shut Up and Dance are my favourites of the bunch.

Could Black Museum work as a finale to the series if they end it?

Reason why I say is.

The Black museum shows a bunch of different items from throughout the series. At the end of the series the museum burns down destroying all the objects within. I can see it as a way of ending the series. Burning away the major things for the episode. If it is a series finale its kind of an interesting way to do it.

San Junipero is the best episode of Black Mirror period. I cry every time I watch it.
