Disney Princess

One day, someone at the Disney Company realized that all of their most successful movies besides the Lion King, featured prominent human female characters with notable similarities but still each unique in their own way. That someone also realized that most of these female characters are princesses, hence the cash-cow franchise "Disney Princess" was born! It's become really popular especially in recent years. It's hard to go around the internet without bumming into something Disney Princess related. I'm confident that almost everyone has a favorite.

I really love these characters and enjoy their movies and I have no shame in being apart of an apparently "girly" fandom. Oh yeah, Sleeping Beauty, the movie where a prince battles a dragon with the powers of hell is really girly. However, I have a few issues with this franchise.

1. The merchandise markets them as Barbies even though only one (Aurora) or maybe three (Snow White, Cinderella) of them come even close to that interpretation. It completely ignores the unique traits they each bring to the table and it's inaccurate to how they really are in the films.

2. They're not allowed to even look at each other in merchandise and thus this dashes my dreams of seeing an ultimate crossover among these amazing female characters.

3. These FICTIONAL ANIMATED characters who are based on legends and FAIRYTALES are expected to be role models for little girls rather than just entertainment.

Anyway, there are currently 11 princesses in the official line-up. Personally I think they should have stopped at 10 but that's just me.

Snow White-She's the princess that's always happy. I enjoy the simplicity of her character.

Cinderella-I really like her and I think she's a strong character in her own right.

Aurora-She doesn't get a lot of screen time but she's a lovable character in spite of that.

Ariel-She's a spoiled selfish brat but she's just so adorable and relate-able. She's a fangirl of humans, I love that.

Belle-She'll probably be the most popular around these parts and deservedly so. I mean she is the nerdy princess after all.

Jasmine-A childhood crush of mine, she manages to make a huge impact even though it's not her movie, that's impressive.

Pocahontas-Colors of the Wind is my jam! Probably one of the more controversial princesses, being based on a real person and all.

Mulan-My personal favorite, kicking butt and saving China. Cue all the people pointing out she's not a princess.

Tiana-She's a very hard worker and I admire that.

Rapunzel-She has a lot of talents and I think that's cool.

Merida-I really don't like her at all. Not because she's Pixar but because she's really just an Ariel/Jasmine/Mulan rip off. Some Belle and Pocahontas is in there too.

Fun Fact - Alice was on the original Disney Princess line.

And Giselle was going to be one but they realized they'd have to pay royalties to Amy Adams for her likeness.

I am surprised that they haven't decided to use all their live action movies to set up a shared universe.

Not entirely fond of how most of the lineup comes from the Disney Renaissance. Ariel, Belle and Jasmine almost coming after one-another does show how Disney rolled with it and kept making movie after movie featuring a princess.

So far in the Revival Era, it seems that they've stepped back a bit. Heck, Anna and Elsa aren't even part of the lineup yet despite being advertised that they were going to be.

If they really were going to have a shared universe, I'd rather it be the animated versions. It's a shame that that Princess Academy short

never came to pass. Would be neat to see the princess characters or other meetups occur, but I suppose House of Mouse is the closest thing we'll get.

Jasmine's my jam. Spitting the apple in Jafar's face was so yes.

I don't even care that she got upset at Aladdin way too easily sometimes.

Yes. Legendary if I'm being honest.

I fux wit Ariel, Aurora and Cinderella, but Mulan is on a level of her own.

Rapunzel from Tangled is my personal favorite. And Tangled deserves much more praise, it was better than Frozen.

Before that (since she's fairly recent) it was Jasmine.

The songs weren't, though.

"Let it Go" was what really sent that thing over the top.

It's a good song, but other than Wanna Build a Snowman I don't even remember any of the others. And even that's more from just hearing about it from other people more than me remembering it myself from the movie.

It'll be surprising if Elsa and Anna from Frozen don't become the 12th and 13th members of the group. Anna is a legitimate princess and Elsa is a queen!

In theory, of all people, they could also include Princess Leia, from Star Wars.

Elsa and Anna are already poised to.

However, as others stated, they're cashing in on Frozen currently so there's no need to try to milk them by adding them to the Princess lineup just yet.

Oh dear, that amount of rage will come from that. I remember back during the dark days of the Disney buyout and all the fan rage at the accusation of Princess Leia joining the ranks of the "weak, girly, Disney Princesses".

Weak and girly? They clearly haven't seen Mulan or Brave then. Mulan and Merida are warriors!

Anna and Elsa aren't part of the *official* line yet because Frozen merchandise is a monster cash cow in it's own right, and comes at a higher price than anything in the Disney Princess line. The Frozen dolls are at least two to three bucks higher than the Disney Princess dolls, and the baby doll versions are at least five bucks higher than the DP baby dolls.

Look at your local toy store around Christmas. You'll see tons of DP stuff, but Frozen stuff will be rare because it sells just as soon as it hits the shelf. It's too in demand currently stop making stuff with the Frozen label so they can merge it with the DP line.

Once Frozen merchandise cools off a bit (see what I did there?) they'll join the official Disney Princess line with the others.

I'm very mixed about the Princess line. On one hand, I do like that the newer princesses are good role models, particularly Merida, but the older archetypical Disney Princesses are just a mess and not something girls should aspire to or look up to. That comes down to just a difference in time of creation, sure, but also they are the lead iconic ones and there was that mess of when they brought Merida in and made her look like a classic Disney princess in clean clothes and makeup not the wild bad ass she was.

It also bothers me immensely that Disney uses Pocahontas at all. Not a princess and an incredibly offensive interpretation all around.

Didn't they actually bring Leia in? Or at least have special Disney Princess line Leia stuff a while ago?

You know comments like this always bother me. Why are the older princesses a mess? Why shouldn't girls look up to them? What's wrong with looking up to a princess who's able to find the strength to smile and sing after surviving an assassination attempt and later manages to find a place where the residents don't let her stay out of pity, instead she earns her keep and also whips them into shape in the process? (Snow White)

What's wrong with looking up to a princess who stays positive in a bad situation, treats all people the way she would want to be treated, makes the best out of her situation and never complains at the hurdles life throws at her? (Cinderella) Or princess who's just a sweet girl, and reluctantly accepts her duty as a princess and obeys her mother figures? (Aurora) Or a princess who goes after her dream, she's eager to explore and learn new things and perfectly capable of taking care of herself? (Ariel)

Of course I don't think I need to defend the rest. Though, what makes Merida so badass? Because she rides a horse and shoots arrows? All she ever shoots is targets and when push come to shove and it's time for Merida to actually be heroic, she needs to be rescued by her mother or her triplet brothers, that happened THREE TIMES. That's more than any other princess, including the older ones. So yeah, I really don't like Merida, she's overrated.

I feel ya brotha, I really do. Comments like what you're criticizing seem to be the "cool" thing nowadays. The older Princesses don't fit the modern "female badass" trope, so therefore they are now "inferior".
