No immortality serum in this universe, thus no surviving Howlers save for Cap.

Which is a shame, as I always loved the guy. Would be nice if we could get Daisy Dugan though, his daughter and chip off the old block.

I may of not liked Avengers that much but Agent Coulson being back has me interested in this.

Here here. Though I have nothing against the man, I don't quite understand why he's now a beloved character. I thought this was supposed to be about the parts of SHIELD we DON'T see?

My guess is that it's running alongside the MCU, before Avengers. If they were going to bring back Coulson as Vision/life-decoy, surely they'd save that revelation for the movies?

Fuck yes! Clark Gregg absolutely owned that role, and it's what made us all love the character in the first place. I never would have been happy if it wasn't the same guy.

This show significantly upticked in my book.

I shouted a very unnecessaryly loud HOOORAAAYYY when I read the news at ComingSoon...
and just yesterday I saw a clip on Marvel's youtube showcasing his appearance in Ultimate Spiderman. WOW... just WOW!
And eventhough he's probably only coming back for the pilot episode, it's still a great news, most importantly... people are now speculating about his apparent death (meaning the series could run in the past -prior to the Avengers-, or in the present -meaning he survived Loki's sceptre-), cause IMHO... it's indeed rather ambiguous in the movie.

Excellent news. Now if Marvel can get the big stars to do occasional cameos in the show, I'd be even more excited.

actually they never really said that Coulson was dead. In Fact Whedon said Coulson isn't dead.

Fury could've just made the heroes think he was dead. I don't recall seeing Coulson put the cards in the chest coat pocket at all.

maria hill said towards the end that they were in his locker
& fury all but said that he used them as push to rally the team together

Yup... therefore as I said, his death was still ambiguous or uncertain...
Probably just me, but this is one of the things I really liked about the movie. The writing was smart enough to allow further exploration without creating plotholes, unlike other Superhero movies this year (and no, I'm not inviting a 'which one is better' conversation, just stating from my point of view)

I know that no-one is never really dead in comics, but, if Coulson is indeed not dead, it feels disingenuous to the fans to deceive them like that. Killing a beloved character is what Whedon is known for. But, more importantly, the death kicks into motion a change to the status quo (id est, it isn't done for shock value, rather than the characters are changed because of the death). This is where I think having Son of Coul in the series is somewhat offputting. I hope they come up with a good reason (I love the idea that he would become the Universe's Vision). But, if they decide that, no he really is not dead, it just reeks of fans dictating the direction of the story, and the producers giving into them. Which just opens a whole can of worms of why that is not a good thing.

I will keep my reservations until I see how they pull it off. But, if it turns out that Coulson never really died, it better be presented very well to make me buy it.

I think it'll end up being a simple "Coulson never died" kind of thing. Having just recently watched the movie, I think it's feasible.

Fury's talking to Coulson as he dies like he's going to pull through, but then Coulson says that it's better this way, because the team needed someone to avenge (well he doesn't actually get the last part out, but it's heavily implied.)

The next thing we know, Fury's telling Hill that Coulson didn't make it. And why did he do that? Because Fury is a manipulative bastard who immediately realized that a dead Agent Coulson was exactly what the Avengers needed to come together. So he had Coulson secretly attended to while letting everyone else think he died.

That could leave us in a really interesting place for the SHIELD series. Coulson could be working deep undercover for Fury, so deep that he's still pretending to be dead. Or they could blow his cover since the ends justified the means and the Avengers aren't exactly going to break up just because a guy they all liked isn't actually dead.

I think this will be a good move. The show needs someone recognizable to attract viewers and Coulson is just the best choice. He's basically the mascot for the MCU, but he also works well as an authority. Since we can't have the SHIELD agents reporting to Fury every episode (since Sam Jackson would be way too expensive to use in the regular cast) then Coulson can work as a nice as the ringleader of the whole operation.

After watching Item 47 I hope that Benny and Clair end up as regular cast members on the show, they would add another level of entertainment to all this. As for Coulson, I'm looking forward to seeing him on the show. Regardless of how his appearance is framed.

I hope he is the Vision, since his death in The Avengers.

Maybe it's going to end up being a prequel series. Or it takes place during the Phase I movies. If not they could always end up having an LMD of Coulson or just the real Coulson himself through the "he didn't really die" means.

Interesting. I definitely agree that there needed to be a drawing force within this, and Coulson is it. It's Whedon, so it's definitely going to be more than the fact that he just didn't really die. Looking forward to this.

I'm of the mind that he shouldn't be alive, but still used. "S.H.I.E.L.D. Wants You!" promotional videos, video training guides as a handy excuse to explain things to viewers such as weapons and tools, the computer voice a la Star Trek, a Greek Chorus, etc.

Ming Na joins the cast as one of Coulson's fellow agents.
