It would still suck if it's not in the same universe though.
I think it's definitely confirmed to be part of the MCU, but what they're saying is they want it to stand on it's own two feet rather than just referencing the movies. We can only hope for an occasional guest star.

Well done.

And yes, the sky is hardly falling. Whedon's just being clear that it's not going to be Avengers: The Series. The agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have plenty of background work that they do, and it will be completely interesting and engaging without token superheroes dropping in every five seconds. And as we've been musing in the thread already, it could give great ground to Marvel characters that they've been trying to bring to TV for years now, and characters that would never get the time of day on the silver screen.

If anything, I'm MORE hopeful now.

indeed. Save the Avengers for the big screen when you can really do them justice. I'd hate to see them neutered for TV.

I am hopeful as others have said we get the lesser known characters like Luke Cage and.....hell just give me Cage and I am good.

With the work they put in to give Jessica Jones a show on the same network, I'd say Luke Cage is fresh on their minds.

I'm actually pretty glad that they decided to use all new characters not established in the films so far.

It would've got repetitive and boring after awhile if "oh look, its so and so" because its expected.

(Also thanks for posting the link to the article, I was about to come and post it here lol)

Marvel mentioned ages ago they were looking for ways to introduce smaller known heroes on a smaller budget, maybe we will see Luke Cage, Cable etc.

That'll be for the best. It'll allow other Marvel properties to potentially shine in this.

On the other hand, a lack of familiar characters may be a huge turn off for casual viewers.

Thus why my vote for Coulson still stands.

Personally I don't care for a series with Coulson...he is good in spurts and the way he has been used in the films and the marvel shorts, but more than that would get on my nerves.

I agree, I like Coulson but I wouldn't want a lot of him in the show.

Time Travel isn't the issue I have with Cable. One Fox, the other is what purpose would he serve. So yes god no to cable. The Time Travel though could be an interesting plot device leading into an Avengers movie. It'd be a good way to do Ultron's future world.

This is EXACTLY what Marvel needs. There is so much backstory with S.H.I.E.L.D., especially Hawkeye and Black Widow, that needs to be explored. And having the guy who directed the somewhat S.H.I.E.L.D. movie involved only means that, if anything, this will flesh out this franchise the way it should be. If you've seen the Item 47 short, you know that this idea can work. And will.
Heaven forbid that Hawkeye & Widow get movies of their own to explain their backstory. I mean, it did work with Cap, Thor & Iron Man. Plus, I dont think either can really support a movie on their own, especially Widow. No one is ever going to take a female super hero movie/series seriously.

Plus, Hawkeye would be the most "interesting" as he is a regular guy like Iron Man, Cap, who becomes a hero without any superness to him. But its also hard to do, as while it could be a Batman Begins, it could also be a Daredevil.

SHIELD will be it's own thing
This is 50/50 for me. I get they cant have the actors from the movies, but at the same time, it'll still make SHIELD & any super on the show look second rate, just like the Teen Titans were seen as the Sidekicks of the League. If its in the same universe, AND the same group, they'll end up being the B-Team.

I'd rather them make a show about the Defenders, Agents of Atlas or Midnight Sons, have it be in the same movie continuity, yes, but still no connections to the movies. That way, there is no reason to even say "Iron Man is on mission X today", go stop the Masters of Evil youselves, because there would be no way to call him. Then maybe you could still have news articles on TVs showing news clips from the movies, if possible.

Cable? god no. Stay as far away from time travel as possible.
Time travel? In a sci-fi show based on a comic? Yeah, the'll NOT do time travel, just like a Wonder Woman film will get made.

Doesn't have to be the star. Just a face to give orders, some kind of joke, and duck out for the duration. He doesn't even have to be in every episode, just a recurring character that makes people say, "oh, hey, I remember that dude".

Then again, they'll probably want this in line with the movie continuity, so he's probably not even being considered. Bleh.

Considering (AFAIK, not too sure on this) that TV rights tend to be separate from movie and comic rights, maybe it's possible to somehow put X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider in this. Or at least make a sort of "jab" and explanation as to why they can't be involved in the movies at all.

The idea of a SHIELD show sounds very intriguing. I want to hear more info about who will star in it, what characters they will play, and the villains they will use. After that, I will feel excited for it. It's gonna be awesome though since DC has Arrow up and running for this season. I hope that show goes well too.

Its the fact its connected to the Avengers that will cause issue. The use of Shield will tie it to the Avengers and Fox sued Marvel over a live action TV Show before and it didn't have any X-men in it it was just called Mutant X.

i think it has tons of potential, as they can broaden the universe and have an x-files-ish type of mission going after some super-powered threat that has lightning powers somewhere or poison gas breath somewhere else...

one potential problem is with any characters (assuming they don't just create all new ones) that might have potential in the movie universe...thus they might be relegated to definite C-lister villains...

on the plus side though they can hype whatever movie is upcoming with subtle and not so subtle tie-ins, subplots, references, etc that can only enhance the shared universe aspect...
