White Ranger / Kibaranger Cosplay build (Pic Heavy!)

Hey all.
Just wanted to share a project Iíve been working on for a few months now, which may be of particular interest to those starting out in the Power Rangers cosplay game.

Iív always had a bit of a problem with White Ranger suits out there. The shields are always way oversized with massive chest coins and inaccurate shapes. The helmets while accurate, are mostly stunt cast, so tiny. The boot and glove cuffs always seem to big. What you get is a cosplay that to the first impression looks great, but compare it to screen captions and reference images, itís actually quiet bad.
Below is an image of Anikiís current white Ranger suit offering-

I have every respect for people who Ďmakeí things. They are talented and skilled. So please donít think Iím criticising them or their work.
But I was sure I could do better in regards to White Ranger.

This project began several months ago when I was fortunate enough to acquire this-

A stunt used White Kibaranger suit made by Toei company themselves. You cannot get more accurate than that. Had I not fell lucky acquiring this, Iíd have gone to my man 007Halu, who has been the best Ranger suit maker for several years and is a pleasure to deal with!

Now two others out there are lucky enough to have the full stunt suits, I only acquired the spandex. So I had to build the rest of the suit. I used the following sources-

Helmet, SCREEN CAST Full size, by Wild Ranger 5.
See below the size difference between stunt and screen cast (credit to eric0101 for the image) Screen is considerably Larger

So, my finished Screen cast helmet

Next was gloves. Doing research I found Cacazan to be the most accurate, quality gloves currently available.

You get what you pay for! Iíd recommend to anyone, extremely fast and beautiful quality.

Boots. Yeh, a bitch. Anikis boots are too short and while his quality has improved, still not awesome in my opinion. So I looked around and Studio Boheme do excellent Ranger boots. But they are the ONLY current source I could find. Unless you buy cheap crap of ebay.

However I still wasnít convinced on the accuracy or the look of the cuffs. The rectangles looked too few and therefore too large. I ended up recycling an old pair of Sushiya boots (remember him??) still in my opinion the best Ranger boot replicas ever made, and conveniently the same boots used on my Green and Red Ranger displays, so they would all match. His boots are tough, well made and accurate.

With the belt and holster there are loads of people who do a good job, including aniki. Halu studio boheme as well as a slough of others all do decent belts. I got mine from Wild Ranger 5 who did my helmet, I respect his eye for accuracy and the quality of his recent work.

So then I was stuck. Shield, boot and glove cuffs, belt buckle. I couldnít find any that I would consider Ďaccurateí they all had some flaw or another. Starting with the belt buckle. Below to the left is the buckle you get from Aniki, to the right is the accurate buckle.

Also here you see the fundamental problems with most of the shields out there. The coin. To the left is the coin you get in both anikiís and maniacs shield (again with every respect to those guys, they do amazing work, but I really was trying to get the most accurate finish I could here), and to the right, a screen used chest coin. Look how dramatically different they are in size!

So the only source I could find for these accurate parts was King Ranger, but due to his backlog of work, it would be a while. Instead I managed to find a collector with the two above pictured screen used props that he was willing to part with. Pure dum luck! But hopefully in the future King Ranger will be a rapid source for these props.

So I started heavy research. With the coin in place I started to plan out the shield. Below show a few progress shots of the work as it was built-

A VERY challenging build, hence my distinct respect for the prop makers out there and anyone who gives something like this a go. Iím NOT happy with it, I went very much for a screen look rather than a stunt look so used fabrics to cover the shield rather than paint. The gold fabric was extremely tricky, it wrinkled, glue soaked through it, and it has a different shine from one side to the other so had to be laid carefully. I think the finished shield is an overall improvement on others out there- itís more accurate, but poorer quality. Alas, itís my first go! Considering that, Its not bad! The accuracy is what I wanted. Itís skin tight. Small. The shoulders are the right shape. The coin is the right size!!! So happy. The whole thing is built from EVA Foam, heat shaped.

So the cuffs for the boots and gloves, on most cosplays, look like this-

The black is too thin, and because the boot is so small the cuff looks huge. It should look like this-

I made mine using a thin piece of sheet foam cut to size using my references as a guide. On top the rectangles were cut and glued on. The whole thing was them wrapped in gold fabric. Thin pieces of roam wrapped in black fake leather were then attached to the top and bottom. The result is pretty good, a bit hap hazard with the fabric again but look great on the suit 😊

Throw in a legacy Saba and a mannequin and the suit was complete! When displaying it, it was extremely hard to make it look right, proportionally. Remember Kibaranger in Japan was a child- the suit was tiny. Probably on someone about 5ft nothing. Trying to translate that into a 6ft mannequin. Thatís why white rangers helmet always looks huge in Japanese footage- itís not the helmet thatís huge, itís the body thatís small!!

I hope you found some of this helpful in terms of making stuff for yourself- you donít always have to use a prop maker, try things yourself! I had great fun trying to do this, and for better or worse, Iím happy with the finished product. See below. It proudly stands next to my Green and Red Rangers. People newer to the game, hopefully you will find the contacts listed helpful.

At the bottom are some of the reference images I had to work with.
Thanks for reading.

Dude, do you want to adopt an almost 40-year-old son? Not to inherit this stuff, just so I have the chance to bask in all that gloriousness you've put together.

Seriously, that is fantastic work there getting that together (both the costume and that collection)!
