The Flintstones Reboot Coming From Brownstone Productions

Warner Bros. Animation and Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions are teaming up for a new “Flintstones” series, Variety has learned exclusively.

The project, which is in early development, is described as a primetime animated adult comedy series based on an original idea featuring characters from “The Flintstones.” The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Animation. No network is currently attached.

“The Flintstones” originally ran for six seasons and over 150 episodes on ABC between 1960 and 1966. The series followed the misadventures of the titular modern Stone Age family, comprised of Fred, Wilma, Pebbles, and family pet Dino. The show also heavily featured the Flintstones’ neighbors, the Rubbles Fred’s best friend Barney, Wilma’s best friend Betty, and their son, Bamm-Bamm.

There have been multiple attempts at new versions of the show over the years, including short-lived series like “The New Fred and Barney Show” and “The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show.” There have also been several “Flintstones” TV specials as well as two live-action films. Seth MacFarlane also developed a reboot of the series for Fox back in 2011, but that project ultimately did not go forward.

Banks and Brownstone recently re-signed their overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. Banks has been increasingly active as a producer in recent years, setting up multiple projects and pilots across all of the broadcast networks as well as cable channels and streaming platforms. Variety exclusively reported in June that Banks is currently developing a series adaptation of the podcast “Over My Dead Body” for the WarnerMedia streaming service, which was recently christened HBO Max. Banks is also preparing to release a new film version of “Charlie’s Angels,” which she wrote, directed, and executive produced in addition to starring as Bosley. She will also appear in the upcoming FX drama series “Mrs. America.”

Banks and Brownstone are repped by UTA, Untitled Entertainment, and Ziffren Brittenham.

There's been a few stabs at a revival announced and attempted throughout the decade (what happened to that Dino, Pebbles and Bam Bam led spin-off?), so I'll believe this when I see something tangible.

I really want a Flintstones cartoon written as a dark comedy/satire like Mark Russell's comic run from 2016.

I'm honestly not sure what to think here. Excitement or dread seem extreme when the article itself points out how many people have dropped the ball on bringing The Flintstones out of extinction. Elizabeth Banks being attached doesn't necessarily lean toward any kind of creative approach, we'd still need an actual writing stable announced to get a real feel for this thing.

As of right now, all anyone can say is they like The Flintstones and want this thing to be good, but that's so... obvious and pointless, ya know?

Yeah, it was, but by the time the 80's rolled around, the show (along with Johnny Quest and The Jetsons) had been rebooted as Saturday morning fare with shows like 'The Flintstone Kids' and 'The Pebbles & Bamm Bamm Show" which I don't think the franchise ever truly recovered from, although attempts like the Harvey Birdman episode and 'Flintstones On the Rocks' (as well as the 2016 comic) have partially helped bring the show back to its adult roots.

The jury's still out on whether she did or not.

Didn't Seth McFarlane have plans to try and do a Flintstones reboot at one point?

So what I'm taking away from this is- The Flintstones property is/was about to become public domain and they're attempting to retain the copyright by rushing some garbage tat out the door as soon as humanly possible?

Those ex 20th CF people were good at that task. They're probably looking for work.

Heh. The company's name is Brownstone. Seems appropriate.

A primetime adult animated comedy sounds nice considering, as said, the original Flintstones cartoon was technically just that. I hope the series retains what made the original show such a hit, though considering the track record with this franchise...I'm not holding my breath.

For anyone who things that the original was targeted primality at kids, here's proof it wasn't.

If they do a new Flintstones, they should just get at the roots of what makes it work: it's modern life as adapted to the stone age. Sure it has roots in wanting to make "The Honeymooners in the Stone Age", but honestly I think that a modern take would update it and make the characters as if they were created today but still living as cavemen instead of just thinking it's the 60s, thinking it's a kids show or thinking it has to be random pop culture references with cavemen. Maybe you could still have Fred as an ancient Jackie Gleason but at least have it fit to what today is instead of still thinking he's living in the early 1960s.

The big question in my mind is whether there are any writers that can write an interesting sitcom that meets that criteria, but without falling into the trap of making things "adult" simply by adding lewdness and profanity.

The Flintstones was for adults. It's a trove of now legendary sitcom tropes about marriage, work, friendship, hobbies, etc. None of which are subjects that have much relevance for kids, but are very meaningful for adults.

Honestly I could see Fred falling into that trap.

I imagine Fred leaves plenty of brownstones in his toilet after eating a big hearty Bronto Burger.
