So I decided to do a video on YouTube on some fan casting for the film. If anyone's interested in my picks, check it out

Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men a Tell No Tales) has been assigned to write the script.

Favreau will be using VR tech for this film.

Favreau told us about how virtual reality tech is being developed faster than other effects tech because it’s a consumer-grade product. “A lot of the simulcam and motion capture technology that we use here, a lot of it was innovated around the making of ‘Avatar,’ and hasn’t really changed much, because there’s just not a lot of consumers,” he said. “There are a lot of people who watch, but not a lot of people who use the technology. So we were finding ourselves building around technology that hadn’t changed a lot in the last 10 years. But now as we’re exploring what is being developed for VR, and game engine technology, a lot of that was used to some extent in ‘Jungle Book,’ but as I look forward to developing this process further, there’s a lot over overlap.”

We asked Favreau about how the tech would be used in the live-action Lion King. He said, “Being able to scout–and some of this we were doing with ‘Jungle Book’ as well, but the ability to actually design an environment virtually, and then to walk around in it with your crew, doing a scout. And to be able set shots and to be able to choreograph movement, and move set pieces around before you do the heavy versions of it. Because there’s a lot of really light files, again, the processing is getting better and the coding is very specific to game engines now, so that the files remain light, so you can experience them in real time, so you can move assets around in real time, and start to rough in what you want to do as a filmmaker. And finally, when you deliver it to the point where you’re actually turning it over, and rendering the stuff in a very expensive, time-consuming way, you’ve already made all your creative decisions using technologies that are more geared towards gaming.”

...Okay seriously, tho. Does this really qualify as a live action film? What part of it isn't going to be CGI? The parts of the sets that aren't green screens?

So then call it a 'non-cartoon' version. People call it live action because there's likely to be more a sense of realism to it, like with Jungle Book even if there might not be even physical sets. But it's part of this wave of 'live action' adaptations, so it gets the label even if it isn't the most accurate. Who really cares.

It would be cool if they just did an extension of what the Broadway production does for the character designs just adapting the animal's key features into a humanoid costume

Have you seen the broadway costumes? They're actually quite beautiful and the lion faces are on these ingenious weighted arms so that they can function as headdresses but when the actor leans forward it lowers the lion's face over theirs, it's quite effective.

Basically Favreau can walk around a virtual Pride Rock if he wants to.

The original animated movie has been added to the National Film Registry. This is one of the many reasons why the remake really will have a tough act to follow, but I do have faith in Favreau.

If this remake is even one-tenth as good as Favreau's Jungle Book, than I'm all ears.

i doubt they will be able to top the emotional severity of Mufasa's Death in the 1994 original in this new one

The Broadway production is an exercise in engineering, ingenuity, and art. How to make this story work in that medium and all of the African Culture & art that went into the designs of the show is mesmerizing. This movie is basically an exercise in latest CGI technology and I don't really see how impressive that is when it's seen in countless movies before it, now you just have actual animals singing. "We're going to make The Lion King, but we're getting rid of the cartoony shit" and casting James Earl Jones as Mufasa in this new "adaptation" really only serves to cement that fact more. At this point should we really expect anyone but Nathan Lane & Ernie Sabella as Timon and Pumbaa?

That's the problem that I have with Disney's ongoing "Live Action" remakes especially when they have stage show counterparts that inventively incorporate humans into fantastical roles, they do basically the same thing as their original movies did but now it just lacks the animated punch of them to really go for things.

Young Simba or adult Simba I wonder? Maybe both?

Great to hear they got James earl Jones. Still very unsure about this whole thing.
