I would love a new movie about Zorro or heck The Phantom.

Maybe if Flash Gordon is successful, Disney can get the rights for a whole King Features animated universe. Flash Gordon, Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, culminating in a Defenders of the Earth style team-up movie.

I think Universal is doing a great job teaching us cinematic universes don't work.

John Carter was a good movie, Disney just didn't promote it properly. There was like, zero merchandising for the movie. Even Prince of Persia got some Lego sets.
If Disney promoted the film more, we could've gotten sequels now.

I never got around to watching John Carter, but I've been watching Friday Night Lights and Riggins (Kitsch) is one of my faves so maybe I'll give it a shot.

I'd be down for a new take on The Phantom, I have a soft spot for the movie. Another one I wouldn't mind another shot coming back would be The Rocketeer.

I do take a certain amount of schadenfreude in all of that, as 2012 was the year that Hollywood collectively decided that Taylor Kitsch was The Next Big Thing. He was a TV actor they could pick up on the cheap and sign to a multi-picture deal, and so both Disney and Universal decided to push him aggressively, getting him on the cover of every magazine, every billboard etc, and it absolutely blew up in their faces.

I agree, John Carter was absolutely marketed horribly. They dropped the 'Of Mars' from the title because Mars Needs Moms flopped, and they felt it was the 'Mars' part that was responsible. Then the "Teaser Poster" was literally just the words "John Carter", which mean nothing to anybody who never read the book from 1917. Hell, the poster/standee of the hero running from the big monster didn't even reach my local theater until the movie was already out. With a huge budget, no star power, no big name director, and no brand recognition, it was always going to be an uphill struggle.

I didn't hate Mars Needs Moms, but it just felt... incomplete somehow. The idea was there, but everything else from the casting to the script to everything inbetween just didn't feel like it came together in the end, which is a shame because if they'd put some heart into it the movie probably could have been something special, and even if it bombed, with some heart in there it could have become a cult classic over time instead of just being outright forgotten.

The art style looking like ass definitely didn't help.

Given that in the movie alone we had one other person and a dog wear the mask, this is one franchise or property that I don't really care who's behind it. Hopefully though if it does happen, it'll be a good story and not try and copy the original. Just do something unique to that.

Or they can base it on the comics. There are some story beats from the original movie but the sheer departure of the original from the comics means we can go back to the crazy horror that it was in the comics.

The original comic had both males and females wear the mask so...I"d go for it.

Has anyone else here seen the 2002 version of "The Count of Monte Cristo"? Myself, I enjoyed watching that in theaters and got the dvd when it came out and still own it. Everyone I let borrow it also said they enjoyed it. Know they had to change some things to fit that long book into a 2 hour movie, but I still say it's great. Was kind of interesting to learn one of the young guys in there later became Superman.

Two years ago, I'd have scoffed. But Zac Efron, Joe Jonas and Ross Lynch (and some good turns from the Sprouse Twins in various projects) have more than proven that once they get out of Disney's iron grip, they can turn in some pretty good performances if they pick the right projects.
