Late Night US Talk Show Thread

We all know that Jay's final week as the host of the Tonight Show begins on Monday, But we are all focused on how Conan O'Brien will do as the show's fifth host. I pose this question to my fellow posters. Do you think Conan will do a good job and that the transition will be a smooth one?

I was a hell of a lot more worried about Jimmy Fallon having his own talk show. I'm not "worried" about Conan at all. And considering that Jay is staying, and coming on again this Fall, frankly, I can't wait to see Conan again. And I'm stoked that the Max Weinberg 7 is still on board. The Roots are really good, but with my taste in music, Los Max Weinberg Siete is the best band in late night.

I totally cannot wait for Conan to come back on TV.

I didn't think Leno was that bad... I found him funny at times. But I completely stopped watching Late Night when Conan's run was over. I didn't find Jimmy Fallon to be funny one bit.

Im actually happy Conan is taking over Jay Leno. I always found that Conan is funnier then Leno and a way better tv show.

Anyways its practically like Leno is not even leaving anymore. It just seems like NBC is moving its programming a hour earlier with Leno at 10 and Conan at 11 with the addition of Jmmy Fallon.

How has Jimmy Fallon been doing anyways? I saw the first 2 shows and I thought they wer'nt bad, but other then that I didnt get a chance to watch the show.

Jimmy's a solid host, especially this early in. In a couple years he'll probably be great.

Agreed. There's something charming about Jimmy, in a befuddling kind of way. But for the most part, I think he's had a far more successful "start" than Conan's. I think he'll be great in a year.

His show needs more 7th Floor West, though...

And the fact that Andy Richter will be Conan's Announcer is awesome in itself.

I have no worries about Conan taking over. The ads already have me in stitches

"My pale Irish skin, burning in the sun like a vampire......."

or his sneak peek at the set
http://www.thetonightshowwithconanob...-peek/1106823/

His actual set is basically a LA version of his old set

He's still facing the same direction to Max as opposed to Leno and Fallon who have the band positioned on their left.

IMO, I still don't find Fallon funny. He pads the first 20 mins with lame SNL skits when more time could be spent interviewing guests.

It only seems that way because he spends very little time in his monologue (which is smart), so he has more time for silly things, but the same amount of time for interviewing as the rest of the night gang.

I don't know. I like Jimmy's show. I find the segments where he interacts with the audience fairly amusing. I'm still waiting to see if he actually wins a game of beer pong.

The problem I think was that people wanted Conan part 2 with Jimmy but he really isn't that kind of guy. I like that he didn't go that route and is making the show his own. I do prefer Conan but im not going to demonize Jimmy and do on occasion watch his show

I don't know.... I really liked Johnny Carson. I liked Jay when he was on as a guest on Johnny... then when he guest hosted... then became 'the guest host'..

I don't care for Conan...

Maybe it's because it's kind of a 'poof!' feeling? You know, Jay was on the Tonight Show... he became "Johnny's guest host" then he became "The Host" when Johnny left.

I have wanted to go to a TS taping for the longest time... I finally got to go during Jay's reign.. (Lucy Lawless, post Duck/Red Wing anthem incident)

The Tonight Show is The Tonight Show... It was never the Jay Leno show... It was never the Johnny Carson show.. or Jack Parr...

I'll give him a chance though... he has his moments...

Leno has always been my favorite late night talk show host. Always has, always will be. I'm disappointed that he is leaving, but thankful he will still have a show. And thank goodness he is keeping hilarious skits like Headlines and Jaywalking.

I understand NBC's logic. They are trying to go with a younger demographic for the Tonight Show and that's completely understandable. And Conan is the logical choice. But having said that, Conan's monologue needs to be funny. His monologues on Late Night were horrendous. He has absolutely no delivery. Walking up and staring at the camera night after night after night is not funny. But his skits can be funny once in a while and I enjoy his interviews.

So I'll watch Conan every now and then, but I'll definitely watch Leno's show in the fall.

Hell yeah. NBC already set up us the bomb by giving Conan three months off, so now the anticipation of all Conanites is palpable. We don't necessarily want Jay off ASAP, we're just craving Conzie.

The only transition I think is in question is how off-the-wall Conan will still allowed to be in an earlier time slot. I can't imagine it'd be too restrictive, but Gynoblast-level stuff may not fly in this O'Brien iteration.

I always enjoyed Jay on Monday nights with the "Headlines" That was one of my favorite things... and the day I went to see Lucy was a Monday!

I don't like Conan's silliness...

But that's what sets him apart from every other talk show host in the omniverse.

Oh, don't fret. Those who can't\won't\don't appreciate Conan's brand of humor are in the minority.
