The DragonBall Discussion Thread: Christmas wish granted! DBS movie December 2018

Oh my God of Destruction, that last thread lasted exactly nine years. I guess Dragon Ball really is the wish that keeps on giving.

So, let's pop our bottles of Champa and Beerus and celebrate the return of a weekly anime, a corresponding manga, a to-be-announced third 21st century feature film and all else Son Goku and his friends!

Last edited by Ankh Primo; Yesterday at 10:21 PM. Reason: Two years later, but I called it! Third movie! :D

Third? But wouldn't this mean second? There's only one other movie that I know of.

Battle of Gods and Resurrection "F" are 21st Century releases. Meaning there's going to be a 3rd in that listing... not a "live" action movie.

I wasn't thinking that they counted. Okay then.

I thought Kanzenshuu cleared up that bit about a third movie as just a miscommunication.

They did. It's just a complete mistranslation of what Yamamuro said. Hell, not even a mistranslation and more like the Spanish blog in question trying to scoop something that doesn't even exist.

The first animated series is turning thirty years old in 2016. If Toei Animation has anything planned it would certainly be wise to start up a project soon.

So, if you had to pick the single absolute worst piece of Dragon Ball media, what would it be? It can be a movie, a single episode, a single manga chapter, etc.

My vote is a toss-up between Evolution and Bio-Broly. The former is... well, I guess it goes without saying, but DBZ Movie 11 is really, really fucking bad.

Evolution... all... the... fucking... way. Nothing is a bad as that steamy pile of dung.

They didn't even find all 7 balls in the damn movie, only 6.

I liked Bio Broly just from the standpoint of it didn't focus on the typical heroes. Goten Trunks Krillin and 18 got the spotlight. Without Goku Gohan or Piccolo needing to step in.

GT & Evolution are the boiling points for me for different reasons. GT made one too many stupid decisions & retcons after anothers that kinda just ruins the season for me.

Evolution.....Ugh that shit was doomed from the start. Look I'm in the mindset that it's essentially impossible to make a Live-Action adaptation of a Shonen Jump series. Oh sure it's possible if you're using slightly more down to Earth series like Ruronin Kenshin or Death Note but not something like Dragonball where the setting is weird, The fights are impossibles, & where everything is far more cartoony than imaginable. How Evolution became what it was I'll never know.

Long answer: Fox wanted control of the DB franchise in the U.S., and they made the same mistake they'd later make with Josh Trank's Fant4stic.

Short answer: Cocaine's a hell of a drug.

I would love to watch a documentary that went into how Evolution became what it was.

I think Evolution suffered from being "Dragon Ball" instead of "Dragon Ball Z." Casual fans wanted buff men screaming and growing blonde hair. Instead we got a "coming of age" story that contained Dragon Ball elements. If they would've had Piccolo's "Ozaru" different from Goku and gave us a better final battle, the film would've worked.
If Piccolo's "Ozaru" was a different creature from Goku that would've led into a Saiyan Arc. Say that Goku is a "Ozaru" too but a different one. They are a alien race. It literally writes itself!
But the actresses who played Bulma and Chi-Chi were gorgeous (cue fap effects) and Ozaru Goku was pretty neat.

The thing is... and I'll say this till I'm blue in the face... it was totally the script.

The actors were fine. James as Piccolo was pure gold and about the only thing I love about the move... Emmy was a great Bulma, Justin was fine as Goku... they just need to make him less Gohan. Chow was a wonderful Roshi, Jamie fit Chi Chi... etc, etc... that script was just dog shit.

I even love the outfits, Shenlong not talking was fine, the Kamehameha was beautiful... but whoever allowed that script to be passed needed to be fired.

It was directed and written by James "Jim" Wong, who made Final Destination 1 and 3 (...ugh); I really hate those movies (worst horror movie franchise IMO).
What a great choice indeed.
Apparently, he was "uncredited" as screenplay (no surprise ) and haven't done any movies ever since (also no surprise); he's only focusing on TV show.
How did Toriyama allowed and approved him to be in charge is beyond me.

I'm in minority, buy I didn't mind Goku as Caucasian.
His ethnicity/race doesn't need to be Asian; although, if they hired black guy to play, then it would be different story. lol
Problem was that Justin Chatwin was terrible choice to play one of the most iconic anime character; then again, it could have been worse... like Shia LaBeouf or Zac Efron.
