now the ACTUAL reviews are starting to hit Rotten Tomatoes. currently sitting at 86%.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/captain_marvel

that's low for an MCU entry. could change though.

Not a fan of prequels in general. They are rarely good.

Trying to keep an open mind and Got tickets for Thursday.

The later trailers with Hole playing has me more hyped for this movie.

*** Warning rant:

Iíve never liked rotten tomatoes. Iím always looking up old movies and the ratings are bs.
Lately it seems like a vehicle for idiocy.

There has to be better review sites out there?

I miss thumbs up/thumbs down because at the end of the day you liked the movie or you didnít.

So...
I'm going to only have one complaint coming out of this movie and that's if Fury loses his eye. In Winter Soldier, Fury shows a picture of him getting promoted or whatever when he's standing next to Pierce and he still has both eyes and was bald. Sure, it's a small detail but...just hoping they don't open up more retcons

Isn't Rotten Tomatoes ultimately compiling a number to show how many of the critics like a movie?

That's because all Rotten Tomatoes does is compile a bunch of reviews in one place so someone can find them and assign a, frankly, arbitrary percentage rating based on how positive the reviews are, regardless of any nuance or granularity in an individual review?

If all you're doing is look at the rating, you're using it wrong.

I miss thumbs up/thumbs down because at the end of the day you liked the movie or you didnít.
Oh, you mean the binary "yes/no" that's the primary reason for toxicity with discussion on the internet?

Yeah no fuck that.

It's weird, a lot of articles use the phrase "The Marvel Formula" as a derogatory, wether it's to describe the characters, humour, visual style, pretty much anything. I've no idea why it's always said in such a negative phrase, when that formula has made Marvel the dominant force in movies right now.

It's like going to a James Bond film and complaining he drives an Aston Martin, sleeps with an exotic woman and saves the world. Marvel has consistently shown they're able to play with the styles, genres and narratives to keep things fresh, but critics are always so quick to ignore that because it doesn't fit their narrative.

Probably the people who only see the formula and not the differences. Or feeling that the differences aren't significant enough to warrant any further discussion.

Very likely.

It's just so bizarre to me that critics can hold hold up "...but, but The Marvel Formula!" as a valid form of criticism.

Doesn't EVERY long-running series have a certain style?

For example, the tone of Creed II hasn't really deviated from Rocky I, nor should it.

There will never be a Pixar film that doesn't carry the hallmarks of the brand.

The same critics that heaped praise on Force Awakens, a carbon copy of previous Star Wars films, seem to dump on Marvel every time they have the audacity to tell an origins story for "not being original enough".

and then when they get something that IS original & unique like "The Last Jedi" they fucking hate it because "it's not what they wanted."

As I said before those videos are the bulk of the Captain Marvel topic. Not enough positive ones are being made.

Interesting that a ton of people are taking out context what an actress said. Then making tons upon tons of hate videos. Why? Why hate something you haven't seen? Seems rather childish. Then again hoping adults acting like adults in this day in age lol.

some of the major problems prsented in the last jedi comes from it's writing. Like the whole casino scene felt to long, and some stuff like it felt it was trying to be "subversive" when it really doesn't work like trying to pretend that the one guy that literally says he doesn't mind back stabbing others and then he actually back stabs them in the end.

And then there is Holdo. While I'm not saying she should have told what's his name the plan I do feel like at least there should have been a reason for the quiet. As mentioned before it would have been perfect had she was trying to keep the plan secret from Flynn and so she couldn't exactly tell the one guy that actually was (maybe) butt buddies with him. You could have written that as a way to mirror the betrayal of that one guy.

Honestly my major problem with Last Jedi is that it spends a good chunk of the movie to seemingly set up the final movie confrontation of Ren vs Rey, which I do like that they definitely went with making Ren the final boss of the new trilogy.

All I'm saying is if people dislike that most of the videos are negative they could make their own videos being positive. Post a review about how the film is great if you think it's great.

Yeah... Its kind of difficult to compete with the pure insanity that goes into thinking you need to make 18 videos in 14 days about the same information from the same movie.

There are positive videos out there about the movie (about every property really) and the suggestion of "Well get on their level!" As if they're not for the most part just toxic obsessives is laughable.

Ok I wasnít trying to start anything.

Thatís not what I meant. I was referencing Siskle and Ebert and how I miss their discussions but at the same time the simplicity of thumbs up/ thumbs down. Perhaps I should have been more clear. Just being nostalgic..

Imo people regardless of the website are the reason for toxicity on the internet not like/dislike thumbs up/down. I understand how RT works and I still think it is a waste for people to put so much value in it.

I like Andrť the ďBlack NerdĒ and his style of reviews. Like Aquaman was a good example.

Does anyone have specific movie critics they listen too?

No, you're saying compete with them. You said because they make so many videos on the same topics and thus is what everyone sees the only answer is to make as many videos as them so the balance of what is recommended is more even.

Again... 18 videos in 14 days from one person. It's incredibly easier to be hateful and toxic than it is to be positive. And unsurprisingly, gains far more views. Nostalgia Critic and AVGN didn't gain their following by offering the real critique in the last minute of their videos, they got it because of their anger.

Which is not an issue with the site itself but how other people use it.

It's not RT's fault if people choose to interpret the metrics of the site in a way that's not intended.

And me personally, by default I don't rely on the word of a single reviewer, because said reviewer is not me. They are going to have views on a work I will not agree with it. Of course they are: they are not me, they are not going to have the exact same opinion and thought processes as I do. So it seems silly to hang on the word of one or several reviewers.

It definitely is, but there is many a person who will hinge their decision to watch something based solely on the masses' response.
