Sony's Morbius The Living Vampire...From The Minds Behind Power Rangers!

...The 2017 Power Rangers film that is.

Sony’s cinematic universe based on Spider-Man characters just got a little bigger.

The studio is developing Morbius, a feature project centered on Spider-Man antihero Morbius the Living Vampire.

Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, who worked on the recent Power Rangers movie, wrote the script, which was just submitted to the studio after a secret development process.

Morbius was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane and first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101, the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.

Morbius is Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. He instead became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength — and fought Spider-Man. Over time, however, he became a slightly heroic figure in his own right.

Details of Sony’s take on the character are not known.

Sony has been furiously developing its stable of Marvel-licensed characters that are mostly based off the heroes and villains that are connected to Spider-Man. The studio, however, is being coy as to whether or not these new movies will be connected to Sony’s Tom Holland movies or connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that is being produced by Marvel Studios.

Sony had no comment.

Sharpless and Sazama previously tackled vampirism with Dracula Untold, Universal’s origin of the most famous vampire that starred Luke Evans. They also count The Last Witch Hunter and Gods of Egypt among their credits.

The duo also are showrunning and writing the Lost in Space reboot for Netflix that is to debut next year.

They are repped by ICM Partners.

Yeah about that:

~Not the most encouraging thing.~

...but hey, another vampire super/anti-hero. Haven't had one of those in a while.

That's funny, originally Morbius was to be the main villain in Blade 2.

Going to be nice to get an honest adaptation of Morbius since the Spiderman Animated version was heavily censored.

Morbius? Really? I could barely see him being a decent Spider-Man movie villain, let alone a solo movie star character.

Sony, just make the Superior Foes movie you want to and be done with it.

Why not. He could be a university student(please not another scientist gone bad!)

He's flying around NY looking for vital protein and Spider-man needs to stop him

Hopefully, while obviously there's the whole vamp motif to it, they try not to make it rely too heavily on it. Then again now I'm picturing this as coming across like a new version of The Fly honestly. Whatever, Sony will do what Sony will do.

I'll bet that the first 90 minutes of the film chronicle his every day life, and all of the juicy "vampire villain" bits are crammed into the last 10 minutes.

From the studio who made a Spider-Man movie so terrible they scrapped their entire plans for future movies....

And a pair of writers, who wrote a Power Rangers movie so bad that it made Saban scrap his entire plans for a 6 movie saga....

Comes a movie about Morbius, the villain you never cared about, in a movie that won't be connected to the Spider-Man you actually like, in a release date that will DEFINITELY get moved around and then eventually shelved.

Morbius alone works. It doesn't need Spider-Man to make sense or justify its origins like some of their other ideas, such as Venom, do.

Morbius is cool because it opens the door to a supernatural/sci-fi genre that Marvel excels at but would never get time to put on film. Morbius and the Legion of Monsters would be incredible as Sony's Avengers take, it's too bad they're not under the Spider-umbrella.

If they were smart they could realize a full cinematic universe of Spider-characters that really don't need Spider-man. Silver Sable alone would work, adding Black Cat is still stupid. Hopefully they're really smart and can find someone at Marvel to make a Prowler movie with Donald Glover for them.

Now, as for "from Power Rangers" here, were they just the last people to doctor up the script or was it the latest thing on their resumes?

Their script for Power Rangers technically wasn't even used. They got a "story by" credit which probably means that Gatins' script kept too many elements from their script to be considered original and they had to credit them with something. Gatins is the only one credited for actually writing Power Rangers, though.

I liked these old black-and-white comics about Morbius. But I am already dry heaving at what kind of garbage that movie would be.

This is correct. Almost every outlet reporting on this has been incorrect. The only probable reason being PR has bigger recognition than "Gods of Egypt" or "The Last Witch Hunter". Facts be damned.

They don't need permission from Disney and Marvel. Sony has exclusive film rights to Spider-Man and all related characters. Homecoming was a collaborative effort between the two studios, but Sony still has those rights.
