Tom Hooper to direct movie of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats'

http://www.broadwayworld.com/article...lease-20160505

The Daily Mail writes that LES MISERABLES helmer Tom Hooper, who was in talks to direct an adaptation for Universal Studios and Working Title, is officially developing the project, with production aimed for a 2017 or 2018 start.

Hooper's big screen adaptation of LES MISERABLES was a box office smash and went on to win three Oscars and was nominated for five others, including Best Picture.

The director is currently deciding whether CATS should be made using CGI, live action, or a combination of the two, akin to Disney's current JUNGLE BOOK remake.

An executive for the project told the Mail: "Do you somehow use actors, sophisticated puppets, CGI -- or what? That's the point of the exercise. We hope to be able to answer all of those questions, following a long period of research."
Beautiful. Can't imagine HOW it could be worse than his Les Miserables, but I'm sure it will be.

I mean... there's already a filmed stage version and the entire point is the intricate choreography. How do you translate this into a movie? There is a paper thin plot.

Will this movie be good or not? I guess that I have to wait until it come on the movie screen to find out.

I can tell you now, it won't be.

But like, why? Cats really only works as a stage production. I feel it will turn out like the Phantom of the Opera. Over the top visuals with a lackluster and over-zealous plot.

It won't even have that. It would literally make no fucking sense at all. Either you have people dressed up as full sized cats like the show (which was already filmed) or you have CGI cats doing complex choreography... or heaven forbid they try puppets.

Yeah...this is most definitely a bizarre choice. Why freaking CATS? Unless they're gonna dive headlong into actually exploring the cats' background and stories (How Grizabella ended up where she is, seeing more of Rum Tum Tugger's flamboyishness, why some of the kittens have a bigger role in the Jelicle ball than others, etc), I really can't see how this'll work as a movie. There really isn't that big of a plot at all.

Nah, in the latest iteration he is no longer a Mick Jagger-esque playboy. Oh Lord Andy decided he should be... a rapper. Complete with backwards hat...

I fully admit I know nothing about Cats, but I knew this was going to happen one day and that day is finally here.

I vote combo. Live actors with CGI faces.

Jennifer Hudson has been cast as Grizabella! Even though I have mixed opinions about this musical I cannot wait to hear her sing "Memory".

Ah, so the play about the horrifying dancing hellbeasts is getting a movie. I hope there's just as much completely unintentional nightmare fuel as the play had.

Baz has also reported that other stars are currently in talks to join the film, including legendary Tony winner Ian McKellan, talk show host and Tony winner James Corden, and pop star Taylor Swift. No deals have yet been confirmed.

Tom Hooper will direct the project for Working Title pictures which is set to begin shooting in November in London.

We're really going forward with this? This is just really stupid... THERE IS NO PLOT. It's not a book musical. It makes as much sense as it did when they made Hair into a movie...

To be fair, if they land Ian McKellan, they won't even need a plot.

Well if they get Ian McKellon he better play Skimbleshanks.

I'll have you know I almost performed this poem as my 8th Grade poetry recital...

Since we're doing this... I hope they go balls to wall. I wanna see Ian dressed up in the spandex and makeup. None of the Mocap bullshit onto an actual cat. I mean the entire selling point of Cats is the choreography and you can't really just translate to an actual cat...

I think the movie has a shot but, as someone else said, the story needs work. I say make the CG and give great choreography to quadruped felines (not ENTIRELY photorealistic because, heh, what they'd be doing won't be realistic )

This source says that he's playing Old Deuteronomy.

I mean, they COULD make some of a plot out of it from what little characterization of the cats we can get from their songs, but at the same time what made Cats fun to watch and listen to wasn't exactly the plot to begin with.

Hey Arnold! did one of the best spoofs of the musical. I wouldn't be surprised if there is another season and some characters go see the film and have the same reactions.

I thought the thread title said said Tobe Hooper to direct when I first saw it, and even as someone who doesn't like live action musicals I was mildly interested for a second Then I noticed it said Tom, and I remembered that Tobe Hooper is dead, so
