'Mary Poppins Returns'

Disney has announced today that they are developing a sequel to their classic film, Mary Poppins. The film is set to take place 20 years after the original and will of course be a musical. Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) will direct the film and Marc Platt is set to produce it. What do you all think of this? I don't know if this can top the masterpiece that was made 50 years ago. If it were to choose an actress for Mary, then I would pick either Anne Hathaway or Emily Blunt.

What the fuck Disney ?

Ataruman September 14th, 2015 01:53 PM

On one hand, there were multiple books.

On the other...really?

Arkvoodle September 14th, 2015 01:54 PM

they DID this already. It was called "Saving Mr. Banks."

That was something I think I forgot to include in my original post. This film will also borrow elements from the sequel books.

Amy Adams for Mary Poppins!

Chiron723 September 14th, 2015 02:46 PM

Are they allowed to do that? From what I'm aware the author hated what they did with the first one so much she put it in her will that no one ever makes an adaptation of the other books ever again. Has something changed?

Titanium321 September 14th, 2015 02:46 PM

Uh... didn't PL Travers hate the first film and dealing with the Walt Disney company so much she refused to let anyone touch the adaptation rights again save for one musical stage adaptation and then still refused any future adaptations in her last will and testament?

Did Disney finally find a way around her estate out of spite or something?

Entertainment Weekly says that Disney and Marshall are collaborating with the Travers estate.

Translation: We care more about the money than honoring something she was diametrically opposed to having happen.

It really shouldn't be surprised on Disney's end with how they sugarcoated her reaction to the movie in "Saving Mr. Banks"

If the songs suck, the movie will suck. That simple.

There's literally nothing in the first that people can't sing off the top of their heads. ENORMOUS shows to fill.

Well, if there's any good news its's that Richard Sherman, the surviving Sherman Brother who wrote the music, is apparently returning to write the songs. I hope he will be able to stay healthy during production though, he's 87 years old.

Not according to the EW article. They have his support, but Shaiman & Wittman (Hairspay) are doing the songs.

Thanks. I did see the support part, but I did not notice it mentioning the new songwriters.

Whats next Disney ? Between this & Petes Dragon & Petes Dragon not even being a musical. Do your worst Disney. Whats next ?

SirianRex September 14th, 2015 07:15 PM

Saving Mr. Banks was pretty freaking good. I have high hopes that anything that carries on the spirit of Disney's Mary Poppins will be just as good.

Well... it was built on lies to maintain their good image.
