OT- Conan to take over Tonight Show

from Yahoo news
Quote:
NEW YORK - NBC announced Monday that Conan O'Brien will take over from Jay Leno as host of the "Tonight" show. But he'll have time to write his jokes — the planned succession won't happen until 2009.

The announcement solves a delicate problem for NBC, which realized O'Brien was getting antsy in his "Late Night" time slot (12:35 a.m. Eastern) and wanted to keep him from jumping to another network.

Leno planned to make the announcement on Monday's edition of "Tonight," a special celebration of the talk show's 50th anniversary.

"In 2009, I'll be 59 years old and will have had this dream job for 17 years," Leno said. "When I signed my new contract, I felt that the timing was right to plan for my successor and there is no one more qualified than Conan."

"Plus, I promised Mavis I would take her out for dinner before I turned 60," the notoriously workaholic Leno said about his wife.

Leno took over from Johnny Carson (news) on "Tonight" in 1992 and after a few years of trailing the man he beat out for the job in the ratings — David Letterman — he passed the CBS star and has been dominant in the time slot.

An unknown at the time, O'Brien had the thankless job of taking over from Letterman on "Late Night," and he was nearly fired after several weeks of painful shows. But he recovered and has been a critical and commercial success.

But O'Brien has openly talked about wanting to move on and, in the late-night world, that means an earlier time slot.
i for one think this is great news. Conan's always been great but ususally dosent get the respect he deserves. and while i'll miss Leno there's still 5 years till all this will happen and i'm sure i'll get tired of him. also hopefully Conan will have writers who can write decent monologue jokes.

I prefer Leno, but O'Brien is the perfect choice.

Excellent news. 2009 is too far away, though..if I still liked watching Leno, I might be glad to have four years to say goodbye, but I can't say that I do.

It's good that they took care of business this far in advance.

Last time it was a mess (with the whole Letterman vs. Leno thing). Hard feelings everywhere, shady contracts, and extremely pissed off stars, executives, and agents...

It would be nice if Leno hosted David Letterman on his final episode, as he used to in the old days (and vice versa). To my knowledge the two of them haven't spoken to each other since the fight for the Tonight Show. It would be nice to see them together again. I can definitely see Leno being all for it...I can definitely see Letterman hating the idea. Oh, well.

I wish Jay Leno the best in his final five years on Tonight, and afterwards as well. He's always been an extremely nice guy, and has always worked very, very hard at whatever he was doing. He earned his 17 years on the throne of late night television. I look forward to seeing Conan kick some ass at 11:30 in the future.

Conan is awesome.

John Stewart is very funny too. Maybe "Late Night with Jon Stewart"...

Wow, Conan's come a long way. I remember when that whole late night world was excavated, and Conan came in with everyone against him, since no one knew who he was. But with people like Max Weinberg, Abe Vigoda, Dr. Joyce Brothers and former mayor of NYC Ed Koch on his side, he pulled through, and has gotten funnier and funnier over a decade. If anyone deserves this, he does. I know I'm gonna miss Jay when he goes, but I'm sure he's looking forward to the time he'll have to spend working on his many cars.

First thing I thought:

"A 8 year old is going to take over a show that is after his bedtime?"

If you watch Case Closed/Detective Conan, you would know....

Jon Stewart seems pretty well-suited for his current job, host of the Daily Show. Although twice the amount of air-time would be better, I don't think the Daily Show format could be effectively stretched into 45 minutes. He'd have to change his mannerisms and routine to adapt to late night talk show humor and personally, I'd prefer to see him as the host of the Daily Show for as long as possible.

Leno is the man. While I do believe Conan is the best choice to replace him, I also believe that Leno will be hanging his suit up a little too early. But now that I think of it, he has worked extremely hard during his hosting of The Tonight Show. I've always been an avid Leno fan and wish him well in these last 5 years.

I like Leno a lot. His nerdy political humor is what made him so great. Most people don't seem to laugh but I find it a riot. I'll miss him if I'm still here by 2009.

On last night's show, when he declared his retirement, he said pretty much the same thing that you did about the whole Letterman/Leno controversy. He didn't want the same thing to happen to Conan, and it looked like Leno was trying to make a sincere attempt at making amends with Dave.

As for his retirement, I was hoping he'd be around as long as Johnny Carson, but Leno got the gig at an older age than Johnny, and in addition to that, Leno still does stand-up every weekend on top of his show.

I personally don't like Jay Leno. >>;

If I get the chance, I watch David Letterman and his wacky show then that guy (he looks like a raccoon). Am I the only one here who thinks that CBS late nite has better comedic hosts then NBC host? >>;

According to a decade's worth of Nielsen ratings, and Craig Kilborn running away like a little girl, yes.

You're not the only one. I like Letterman a lot better. I (please forgive me for getting semi-political here) don't care for the more conservative celebrities like Leno. I also enjoy Letterman's sketches and antics a lot more.
That's cool that Conan will get the tonight show but I'm kind of disappointed because I was hoping he would jump to CBS when Letterman retired and take over for his show.

On the downside of this news Conan will have to move to LA, leaving new york

I'm guessing here but when he wrote for Simpsons he flew back and forth from LA to New York or stayed for a while then returned a few years later to write for SNL right?

Max sucks at life, but is good at the drums. John Stewart hosting a late night show would be better than sex, but sex while watching that show would kill you.
