Command Center / Power Chamber Discussion

If you were ever like me, the Power Rangers' Command Center was one of your favorite parts of the original series, up until its destruction at the hands of Divatox in Power Rangers Turbo.

For years, the Command Center remained an enigma until I discovered that it was an actual filming location (The Brandeis-Bardin Institute's House of Book), in addition to a miniature model used for shots throughout the series.

Years later, I'm still fascinated with the design and architecture of this building- but I have new questions that maybe someone can help answer.

The House of Book has a long standing sci-fi history, as it was used twice in the Star Trek universe and once in the Twilight Series- but what was it that lead Haim Saban and company to choose this building to represent the Command Center of Zordon of Eltar?

We've had threads similar to this one before, but I really wanted to do more than share pictures- I really wanted to discuss this, especially now that the 20th Anniversary of the MMPR series is upon us.

Speaking of sharing pictures, here are some newer pics of the House of Book that you may or may not have seen before.

Once in the final season of Chuck as well.

I'm guessing the fact that it was a weird-looking building located in southern California. Which would probably be the reason the other franchises used it as well.

It's a unique looking building. Not much more to it than that.

Why was it used in Star Trek? Twilight Zone?

It simply looks very futuristic and sci-fi-y in design, like it was built by extraterrestrials. It's a perfect building to use as a command center as well due to the stack on the outside. You could imagine that stack having satellite communications and galactic surveillance equipment in it.

Also, even though I know it's a real building, it still looks like it isn't real or like it was built for movie purposes and left standing on a movie studio property for tours. It's easily more iconic (at least for Power Rangers fans) than the clock tower from Back To The Future or the Enterprise from Star Trek. Heck, the fact that is a real building makes it even more interesting.

It makes me sad that the building looked so fantastic, yet we only got to see two rooms (and the underground tunnels Goldar and Rito got lost in) in the entire five seasons we had the Command Center as a base.

There was the main room, the secret room (where White ranger powers were made) and then the power chamber. Perhaps a fourth depending on where the shark cycles were first shown.

The building itself truly is a work of art. I loved the design the moment I first saw it as a kid.

Honestly I thought they selected that building because it resembled the head of the original megazord somewhat.

Yeah, there could have been so much more to it. I loved the design of the movie Command Center- that was awesome. The most we ever saw of the original design, I think, was in the Chase Into Space eps.

I'd love to get my hands on some diagrams or schematics if such things ever existed, or at least an official response as to its selection- maybe proximity to filming locations?

Due to its location beneath the main chamber, I always assumed it was the Power Chamber that the White Ranger's powers were created in.

I don't think the rooms we saw were anyway connected to the actual building. Typical Hollywood effect, have a nice external shot of a building, but use a soundstage for the actual filming.

True. I can only think of twice that the actual location was used- in Day of the Dumpster and then the Chase into Space two-parter.

Used also in "Alien Rangers of Aquitar,"
Alpha went outside to deactivate the implosion device set by Rito and Goldar

Ive allways wondered who designed that building it wouldd be great to see what other works he has done, in terms of rooms in the pr universe, a pr comic in the uk showed that the hidden chamber and power chamber where located seperate, it showed thst the hidden chamber was in between the comman centre and the power chamber

A bit off-topic but was the turbo power chamber the same as the zeo power chamber or were they separate places?

That's actually a good question. I mean, the tubes were along the back wall just like before, but things were clearly redesigned. And thinking back on "Chase Into Space", they came in through the front door to enter the Power Chamber, when it was supposed to be underground in "A Zeo Beginning".

So, it's actually quite possible that Turbo's Power Chamber was a rebuilt Command Center instead.

you just be a nerd and ring the buzzer at the gate and tell them you are a tourist and really wanna see the building lol. thats what i did and they let me in. just make sure you have a good car, because its a bit of a steep narrow drive up the side of a mountain to get to it, but beautiful once you reach the top. i went and saw it when i went to morpicon. i didnt make it all the way from chicago to be stopped by the gate lol. also, you can check in on facebook at "the power rangers command center" lol.
