Twentieth Century Fox and developer The Multiverse Network have announced a Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMO, a game based off of Joss Whedon's popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show. The announcement was made by producer and member of Multiverse Advisory Board Jon Landau at the Virtual Worlds Conference and Expo earlier today.
According to Gamersdailynews.com, the game is currently in development and will be playable in a fully 3D environment, or as a Flash-based 2D application. Both types of players will be able to interact with each other. The game will launch through Multiverse's new virtual world, "Multiverse Places," and will go into beta testing later this year.
One down side to this announcement is the delay of Multiverse's other MMO, Firefly, which is also based on another Joss Whedon TV show. Firefly was tentatively set for a to-be-announced 2008 release, but the company is now focusing its efforts on the newly announced Buffy title.
For gamers unfamiliar with the long-running show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, high school student by day and destiny's chosen vampire slayer by night. In the show, she was aided in her expeditions with the help of her friends, also known as "The Scooby Gang."

As much as I like Buffy, I have to say this news is lame. I'd much rather see a third-person action/adventure game based on Angel with a modified version of the engine they used for the two Buffy X-Box games.

Yeah, that would be neat. I don't know If I can get seriously into a MMO. How would one find the time. I may not have much of a life, but I do have enough of one to prevent getting to seriously involved in any game like this.
Tho, I did toy with the idea of a Highlander game like this, back when no one even heard of these type of games.
We'll never get an official PR MMO, because for one thing, it isn't as popular as things like Buffy, Star Wars, Star Trek, or even comic book/pen & paper heroes, like Champions Online, City of Heroes/Villians, and DC Universe Online. Apparently, it's not even as popular as anime either, since there's also a Dragon Ball MMO coming out. I think that probably tells just how far down the ladder PR is in terms of popularity.

This is probably going to sit in developmental hell forever, if the same company's "long-announced but never shown pictures of" Firefly MMO is anything to go on.

that's sad. I was part of a Buffy RP for two years and my OC was practically cannon by the end of it. I was hoping to bring it into a MMORPG format. Sad day.
