They didn't at first, but since film critics have always had issues when it comes to "un-artsy" films, it's a more apt analysis simply to gauge what those who already went in wanting to see such a film thought, to the point where advertisers are now highlighting a favorable RT score themselves.
Whether that means we're looking for them to tell us that or they need to tell us that because most other opinions make them look bad is unknown, but my guess is it's probably both.

Between the Walt Disney Christmas, Rose, and Macy's Thanksgiving, we've had plenty of PR parades.
