Mystical Forest; nineteen years ago
A young woman hummed aloud as she picked flowers, fruits, and herbs and placed them in the basket she was carrying. She’d been out collecting things for a good part of the day, and after a another ten minutes she started back for her home. As she approached the small dwelling, a woman who had similar looks emerged from within the house.
" Sister, I did not know you were coming by today," the woman with the basket spoke up, almost faltering in her steps, but managing to catch herself before her sister knew something was up.
" I was looking for some chokeberries. The ones that grow around here seem to be better in my spells and meals. Are you all right, Niella? You look a little pale," the woman’s sister told her.
" I’m - fine, Udonna. I had a headache earlier, but I boiled some bark from an aspen tree to help with the pain," Niella replied, just as a tiny whimpering came from inside the house.
" That sounded like a baby," Udonna said as she ducked back inside the house. When she came out, she was holding a blanket-wrapped bundle. " Niella, why would you have a baby in your home?" Udonna asked her sister, and Niella gulped before replying.
" I - found the baby in the far reaches of the forest. It’s parents were probably killed by the undead monsters that the Master sends up every now and then," Niella said, the lie coming easily. She held her arms out and took the baby, crooning softly to it.
" You have always wanted a child. I am proud that you were the one to find her," Udonna said with a smile as she gave her sister a hug, taking the basket from her and putting it on the kitchen table inside the home. She was arranging the ingredients on their proper shelves when a terrified scream erupted from outside, causing her to hurry to find out the cause of her sister’s scream.
When she cleared the doorway, she saw her sister scrambling to her feet, running after someone who was running away from her. " Bring back my Diora!" Niella screamed, throwing up her hands and shooting forth beam after beam of sparkling white energy.
The creature that held the tiny squawling baby stopped for about five seconds to try and hush the baby up, and that was long enough for Niella and Udonna to catch up with it.
With an angry hiss, the creature dropped the baby into the bushes, whirling around to face the two women. " Necrolai," Udonna angrily observed.
" Give me back Diora," Niella cried, anger mixed with the fear on her face and in her eyes.
" I don’t think so," Necrolai coldly replied, just as a portal to the surface world opened up close to them. Necrolai laughed at the expression on Niella’s face. " I can kill the child in an instant if I want to," she taunted the distraught woman. A strange looking creature suddenly appeared on the scene, humming an off-key nonsensical tune aloud. When he saw the two women and the female creature, he froze.
" Please, get my daughter to safety," Niella pleaded with the second creature before she leapt at the female thing before her. Her sister joined in, but they were still having a hard time keeping their magic strong. With a final slash from her dagger-like weapon, the thing called Necrolai took flight, angrily soaring away from the two women, who were now lying on the ground.
When Niella was strong enough, she got up, looking around. Sadly, the baby was gone, as was the creature she’d asked help from. Unable to stand the shock of not knowing the fate of her child, Niella suddenly collapsed to the ground, her eyes closing in unconsciousness. Udonna weakly got to her feet, using her snow-flake-tipped wand to levitate her sister’s body.
" I hope we can someday find the child," Udonna whispered as she arrived back at her sister’s home. She didn’t even notice the faint wink of light that appeared a hundred feet from the front door, nor did she notice the creature from earlier appear from the trunk of a tree.
" Oh, I hope the witches don’t realize what I’ve done," he groaned, hurrying off quickly into the woods.

The town of Creighton Falls, South Carolina; 1988
" Look, Alan. Our daughter is trying to spell her name," a woman happily exclaimed as a one year old toddler tried her best to pick out the right letters from the plastic box beside her.
" She is a smart one. We’re lucky to have her as a daughter. Everyone keeps telling us how adorable she is," the man named Alan proudly boasted to his wife.
With a grin of glee on her face, the little girl waddled over to the man and woman, holding her arms out. " Mommy, hold!" she proudly said, and the man and woman laughed at her audacity.
" I think she’s ready for a bath. How about it, you little munchkin?" the woman asked the little girl, and the girl nodded, clapping her hands together in agreement.
" All right, we’ll go take a bath, so we can be ready for daddy to take us out to dinner," the woman said as she got up and carried the child down the hallway.
" Foo, Foo!" the little girl exclaimed, meaning food. Neither parent noticed the tiny hair-sized trickle of dark energy that the girl’s fingers left on her teething ring, nor the fact that a flower in the vase in the kitchen wilted even as another blossomed brighter when the girl passed by.

The town of Creighton Falls, South Carolina; eighteen years later (present day)
" But mo-om!" I protested, folding my arms over my chest and glaring at a spot on the wall.
" Don’t ‘mom’ me, Blaze. We’ve been talking about this move for weeks and weeks. Your father and I have decided we need a change in scenery, and the town we’re moving to is lovely. It’s where we found you," my adopted mother told me.
" I know that, but I seriously thought you were kidding about moving! I mean, I’m supposed to be going back to college this semester!" I exclaimed as I watched my mother packing the last of my clothes into a duffel bag.
" I’m sorry your plans are going to be upset, daughter, but it’s for the best. Your father’s job can transfer to the branch in Briarwood. Now, I don’t want to hear any more about not wanting to go. Everything’s already been packed, and we’re leaving the house in ten minutes. If you’ve got to use the bathroom, go before we leave. I’ll meet you at the car," Mother told me before putting the duffel bag on the bed and leaving the room.
I almost instantly felt bad for practically yelling at her, so I hurried in and out of the bathroom, grabbing my three small duffels before hurrying from the house. I gave it one last look as my dad placed my bags in the bag of the van. " I’ll miss you, Creighton Falls," I whispered as I climbed into the car, and dad drove us to the airport.
I didn’t even look out the window as the plane started up and we coasted down the runway, my thoughts in a turmoil. A hand on my arm startled me, and I jumped a bit before realizing it was Mom.
" Take a nap, sweetie. It’ll be a few hours before we get to Briarwood," she told me, handing me a pillow and one of the blankets that we’d brought on the plane with us. I leaned my seat back some, pulling down the window cover before laying my head on the pillow and slowly drifting off to the sleep.
* * * * *
" Blaze. Blaze, sweetie, wake up. We’ve landed," my mother’s voice said, breaking through the layers of sleep that surrounded me.When I sat up, I saw that over half of first class was already empty, so I quickly grabbed my duffel bags and followed Mother off the plane. Instead of going towards the luggage claims area - our belongings had been shipped by U-Haul air - we went out to the parking lot, where dad was unlocking the rental car that had been left for him, courtesy of his new employers here in Briarwood.
When I saw a close-up of the car, I started grinning because it was an older model four-door German-engineered convertible. Casually tossing my bags in the back of the car, I climbed in behind the passenger seat, after adjusting the radio to my liking, of course. Native American music soon came blasting out of the speakers, and I settled down as dad began the drive to our new home.
" Just what kind of place are we going to be living in, anyway? Another apartment building?" I wanted to know after about twenty minutes of riding.
" You’ll see when we get there," was all my dad would say. I was about to ask him again, just to see what kind of funny reaction I’d get, but I was knocked back against the car seat as something exploded less than twenty feet away from the right side of the car.

Dad swerved the car to avoid that blast, only to have another series of blasts explode all around us. The car went spinning out of control, slamming up against a tree and sending me flying through the air, where I landed - painfully - fifty feet away from the car.
I cried out as I tried to move and felt a sharp pain in my left wrist; guess I must’ve sprained it or something. My mother’s cry of pain was even louder than mine, drawing my attention back the car where she and my now unconscious dad were still at. Groaning through the pain, I used a broken limb from the tree by me to steady my body as I made my way back to the car.
I nearly fainted when I saw the blood on my mother’s chest, and the deep gash on my father’s forehead from where a jagged tree limb had sliced across his head.
“ Blaze,” my mom whispered as she tried to keep conscious.
“ Mom. Oh my God, I’ll - I’ll call the paramedics,” I told her, trying to grab my cell phone out of my biggest duffel bag. Yet another blast shook the ground, causing dead leaves and dirt to get kicked up all over us.
“ No! You - must - find cover first. Go, run for safety, and - then call,” my mother rasped before lapsing into unconsciousness. I tried to open the car door, but something went whizzing by my head, destroying a tree near me. With a last look at my parents, I darted for the safety of a large oak tree several yards away. When I chanced to look from behind the tree, I nearly passed out myself when I saw the monster standing less than a hundred feet from the car. The freak was like something out of an evil fairy tale, and I cringed as another blast landed near the place I was hiding.
“ Dead humans will please Imperius,” the thing said, before five colored blasts of energy struck it, sending it flying through the air. I screamed and ducked down the ground as the thing landed, for it was now less than ten yards from me, though it had its back turned.
“ Stop right there!” a voice shouted, and five suited people seemingly just dropped out of the sky, landing in defensive stances on the leaf-strewn ground.
“ Power Rangers, how nice of you to show up,” the ugly monster thing sneered as it climbed back to its feet.
“ Pink, Blue, get the people out of that car. Green, Yellow, and I can handle this freak for awhile,” Red said to the two of the costume-suited people that had skirts on their costumes. They nodded their helmeted heads and ran to my parents’ car, allowing the three guys to begin the task of fighting the ugly creature. I watched from my crouched position as the monster continuously kept knocking the three figures away from him. Even when the girls joined in, they were still getting beaten.
“ Mystic Muscles!” Green called out, and the upper arms and torso of his suit began to bulge out.
“ Mystic Gloves!” Yellow called, summoning a pair of boxing-like gloves to his fists. I cringed as they were both sent flying back ten minutes later, smoke and sparks coming from their suits. Red, Blue, and Pink tried to defend their teammates, but eventually they, too, were sent flying back. One of their weapons landed at my feet, and I gulped when Red’s head turned in my direction and saw me.
“ Get out of here! Get - to safety!” he shouted at me, even though he was obviously hurting. I was too paralyzed to move, even after the creature turned in my direction.
“ Goodie, another human!” he screeched, readying the blaster weapon he held in his hands.
“ No! Leave - the civilian alone!” Blue shouted.
I grabbed the weapon off the ground, shakily getting to my feet. “ Don’t worry about me, whoever you five are,” I told them, ducking as a round of blasts ripped apart the tree beside me, sending it crashing to the ground.
When the monster prepared to fire at me a second time, I tossed Red’s weapon at him and ran, hiding behind the remains of my parents’ rental car. As the monster fired at Red, something moved in to block the blast, simultaneously firing a blast that sent the monster flying. I waited no longer to see what would happen, because a nearby citizen came and grabbed my arm, dragging me to safety in a nearby store. “ Let the Power Rangers handle the fight,” the stranger told me.
“ I have to find a phone. My - my parents are badly hurt, and I - I don’t know where the Pink and Blue Rangers took them,” I moaned, cradling my sprained left wrist against my chest.
“ Paramedics came and took them to the hospital. I will ask someone to drive you there after the fight is over,” he told me, before he hurried to a back area of the shop. I was left to watch as the Rangers managed to get in a few blasts and hits from their weapons before they were knocked back again.
The monster was about to finish the five Rangers off when another Ranger appeared on the scene. This one had on a lot of gold armor, and he carried a different weapon. “ Wow,” I whispered. That was the last thing I said before unconsciousness reached out and claimed me. I never even felt it as my body collapsed to the floor of the store.

Nick Russell smacked his fist against his palm, angrily striding into the room currently occupied by two females and three other males. “ You too, huh,” the guy with the reddish-orange hair said.
“ I can’t figure it out. That freak should’ve been easier to beat. He was way stronger than any of the usual monsters we’ve fought,” Nick complained as he dropped onto a stool beside the guy who’d spoken.
“ Yeah, don’t I know it. I think I’ll have a bruised backside come tomorrow,” the darker-haired younger guy spoke up, his voice identifying him as an Australian native.
“ You did well, Rangers. As best you could. You saved innocent civilians from being killed,” the woman in the flowing white clothing spoke up.
“ Thanks, Udonna, but that doesn’t make me feel any better. That girl almost got herself killed, and her parents could still die,” Nick mumbled.
“ Where are Vida and Madison?” the oldest of the guys wanted to know.
“ I asked them to go to the hospital and check on the girl and her parents. After she threw me my Magi Staff, I figured I owed her at least that much,” Nick replied.
All of a sudden, Udonna swayed on her feet, and the other female had to reach out and grab her arms to keep her falling. “ Are you okay, Udonna?” the girl asked, and Udonna nodded.
“ I’m fine, Clare. I’ve just got a small headache, that’s all,” Udonna told the girl as she withdrew her arms from Clare’s hands, causing the older guy to frown a bit.
“ Are you sure?” the guy asked her, and she nodded.
“ Yes Daggeron. The only thing differing today from any others is the strange energy reading I got from the Crystal Ball,” Udonna admitted, shutting her mouth when she realized she’d revealed something she’d not wanted to share with her friends as of yet.
“ What strange energy reading?” Nick asked.
“ Not long before the attack, I got a strange energy reading from the area where the monster attacked. I’ve never seen the readings before, not even when the Mystic Wizards were fighting the forces of evil all those years ago,” Udonna told them.
“ Udonna, something strange is happening with the Crystal Ball!” Clare called out. She’d gone over to the Ball to see if she could see anything. Udonna and the others crowded around behind her, staring solemnly into the Ball, until a picture began to form in the black-purple mist inside.
Clare had a puzzled look on her face. “ That’s funny. Why is it showing images of patients in a hospital?” she asked.
“ I do not know. It has never shown these images before. Daggeron and I will study these thing further. Rangers, I think the three of you should go back to your homes and your lives. Rest up until we need you again,” Udonna told the three younger guys.
“ I’ll go up to the balcony and feed Fireheart some chokeberries,” Clare said, picking up a basket from along the wall and leaving the room. Once she and the younger guys were gone, Daggeron turned to face Udonna.
“ There is something you are hiding from us, old friend. Can you not even share it with me?” he asked her. After a bit of mental deliberation, Udonna gave in.
“ There has been one other time when I’ve gotten a reading like that, and when I’ve felt dizzy,” she told him, causing one eyebrow to raise.

He was silent, so she continued. “ Many years ago, almost a year before Clare was born, Niella found a baby in the outer reaches of the forest. She took it in and cared for it, but Necrolai tried to steal her away when the baby was only a few months old. Phineas - who we didn’t know at the time - showed up just before Niella attacked Necrolai."
" A portal had opened up near us, and by the time Niella was able to get to her feet, Phineas was gone and so was the baby. She cried many times for over a week, morning the loss of the baby. Yet for some strange reason, she called the baby hers. The only man she even thought about before the baby showed up was Calindor,” Udonna said.
“ That is strange. But when exactly did the reading show up?” Daggeron wanted to know.
“ I was picking chokeberries near Niella’s home - almost a month after the baby disappeared - when Calindor showed up. He said that his ring was missing. I’d already guessed this, because his ring is what caused the readings to show up when I was looking into the Crystal Ball earlier that morning. I saw the ring, but it was on a chain around a baby’s neck."
" Since then, I haven’t sensed anything. Until today, I’d forgotten about the ring. If it’s in the surface world, then that means that the baby that Niella found could still be alive,” Udonna murmured, thoughts of how distraught Niella had been over the baby’s disappearance beginning to roll through her mind again.
When the mental cogs slipped into place, Udonna and Daggeron’s gazes met once more. “ I can’t believe I didn’t see this before,” Udonna whispered.
“ I remember Niella acting a bit strange for almost nine full months, Udonna. I also remember you telling me about the baby just showing up. Udonna, I think that Niella gave birth to the child, and hid her pregnancy with her Gatekeeper powers,” Daggeron spoke up.
“ Then that would mean that her baby’s father could only be one person,” Udonna murmured.
“ Calindor,” Daggeron practically spat, anger springing to his eyes.
“ He must have taken advantage of my sister, and when she began hiding her pregnancy, she must’ve taken Calindor’s ring from him when he didn’t realize it,” Udonna gasped. At that moment, the Crystal Ball began clouding up with a black mist. Udonna turned and stared into the mist.
“ The same strange reading is coming from the hospital the wounded family was taken to,” Udonna observed.
“ I’ll contact the girls and tell them to try and find the source of the signature,” Daggeron told Udonna as he pulled out his Mystic Morpher.
“ I’ll go over the spell books to see if there’s a way to help them,” Udonna said as she left the room. Neither of them noticed the brief picture of light glinting off of a ring that showed up in the Crystal Ball.
* * * * *
I awoke with a groan, placing a hand to my head as I sat up. When I opened my eyes, I was briefly disoriented to find that I was in a hospital room. An IV needle was stuck in my left arm, and I shuddered, for I truly hate needles. At that time, I remembered how I’d gotten there, and I swung my legs over the side of the bed. I was reaching to remove the IV needle when two girls I’d never seen before came walking through the door. When they saw me awake, and saw me attempting to get up, the girl with the short hair hurried for the nurse while the girl with the longer hair hurried to my side.
“ The doctors said you would be unconscious for several more hours. You need to rest,” she told me.
“ Who are you? And where are my parents?” I demanded to know.
“ I’m Madison Rocca. My sister Vida is the one who went to get the nurse. Your parents are in the room next door. They’re pretty banged up, but they’ll be okay,” she told me as her sister came hurrying back with a white-clad nurse. The middle-aged woman checked my vital signs, shaking her head in puzzlement before leaving the room once more to confer with a doctor.
“ I’ve got to get to see them. A monster attacked us, and we’re new in town, and - wait - how’d you know I was here in the first place?” I queried. The sisters gave each other looks before Madison spoke up again.
“ We work at the Rock Porium. We came in late to work, just as the monster attack ended, and we found you on the floor just inside the front door. We drove you here,” Madison said with a small smile.
I stared curiously at her. “ Thanks, but I really need to get out of here. I don’t like hospitals, and I like IV needles even less,” I admitted, just as the doctor came in. He made the girls wait outside while he himself examined me.
“ You’re one of the best recovery cases I’ve seen in my time at Briarwood Memorial Hospital, Ms. Matthias. Other than some slight dizziness and occasional pains from the bruises you’ll have, I can’t see any reason why you can’t immediately be released. I’ll talk to the head nurse about getting you your discharge papers,” the doctor told me before he started to leave; the nurse had unhooked my IV while the doctor was talking.
“ But what about seeing my parents. We’re new here, and we were headed for our new house when some monster attacked,” I told him as the nurse helped me slide off the bed.
“ Unfortunately, the sedatives and painkillers we had to give them are very strong, and will cause them to be unconscious for two or three days. You can go in to see them in four days, “ the doctor informed me before he walked out of the room, the nurse right on his heels. I groaned aloud to myself.
“ Ugh, great. Now where am I gonna live until then?” I mumbled.
“ Um, we couldn’t help but overhear. If you need a place to crash for a few nights, you can stay with us. I’m sure our parents wouldn’t mind,” Madison piped up, earning a surprised look from Vida.
“ Maddie, I don’t know if that’s such a good idea,” Vida protested.
“ If our parents get mad we can tell them how she wound up here. Come on - uh, I didn’t get your name,” Madison said with a sheepish smile.
“ I’m Blaze, Blaze Matthias. And you have no idea how much my parents will appreciate this when they wake up. No one brought our things from my parents’ car, did they?” I asked, and Vida actually nodded.
“ We asked some of our friends to rescue the stuff before it got totally ruined. We had a nurse place an outfit in the closet, and we left the rest of your things at our store. We can go by and get them,” Madison offered, and I finally smiled, giving her and Vida brief hugs before grabbing my outfit from the closet and heading into the tiny bathroom. I was in and out of there in ten minutes, and - after peeking in the window at my parents - I finally followed Vida and Madison from the hospital.
We’d climbed into a light blue convertible and were maybe ten minutes away from the hospital before I heard a strange sound. Vida and Madison glanced at each other before Vida - who was in the back seat - took out some cool kind of cell phone and held it up to her ear. She seemed to listen for a bit, then closed the phone and put it back in its case on her belt.
“ Change of plans. I’m sorry, Blaze, but we’ll have to drop you off at Rock Porium. We’ve got an important meeting to attend. I hope you don’t mind,” she told me, and I shrugged my shoulders, keeping silent until we pulled up to a rather lovely music store. Vida and Madison ushered me inside, introducing me to the store’s manager before hurrying back outside. I glanced around at the place, noting how all the CD’s and discs were in alphabetical and genre order.
“ I’m sorry about your parents. But feel free to look around. I have plenty of music,” Toby told me before disappearing into his office and shutting the door behind him.
No sooner had he done that than a customer walked in. I started to call for Toby, but I could sense that he was very busy, and since the woman was in a hurry and I didn’t see anyone else around, I decided to ring up her purchases. The cash register was a standard two-thousand-six Keystone model, so it was easy to figure out how to use it.
I thought that Madison and Vida would be back at any time; turns out, I had to wait on ten more customers before I saw the girls driving up outside. I shut the drawer and came around the counter as they came back inside the store. Madison looked from me to the departing customer.
“ Were you just waiting on her?” she curiously asked me, and I nodded.
“ Yeah, waited on her and ten other people. Toby seems busy in his office, so I didn’t want to disturb him. I went by the prices marked on the label. Oh, and someone named McKenzy said they’d be back for some more Bon Jovi music,” I added with a shrug.
“ Maybe we should talk to Toby about hiring you. McKenzy doesn’t normally like talking with anyone but Vida. I think he has a thing for her,” Madison said with a wink, and Vida lightly punched her arm.
“ He does not, and you know it. I just tell him the truth about music, that’s all,” she retorted. The front door opened yet again, and three guys came in, all wearing work shirts just like Vida’s and Madison’s.
“ Hello, I’m Xander Bly,” one of the guys said, walking forward to shake my hand. His voice had a rather charming Australian accent in it, and I smiled at him.
“ Hello, Xander. I’m Blaze Matthias. It’s nice to meet all of you. During the attack on me and my parents, I thought about packing myself up and leaving Briarwood for good, but with the Power Rangers helping me and then Vida and Madison asking me to stay with them for a few days - well, I think I just might decide to stay after all,” I spoke. No sooner had the words left my mouth than Vida’s phone rang again. She moved away from me to answer it, then ran back to our little group.
“ Blaze, stay in here and hide. We’ve got to go,” Vida said as she and her sister and their friends practically ran out the door. Not wanting to miss what was going on, I followed after them, coming to an abrupt halt when their trail ended in a dead-end alley. Puzzling over their disappearance, I started to walk out of the alley, when I noticed a strange symbol on the ground.

" What in the world?" I murmured, reaching down to touch the symbol. Before my fingers even encountered the thing, the circle enlarged, encompassing me in the center. I opened my mouth to shout, but the circle dragged me down into the ground before I had a chance to.
When I was able to breath again, I found myself in a dark, strange room. Sparse light penetrated the eery doom-and-gloom feeling of the area, and it was by sheer luck that I spotted a strange case lying on a wall table. I opened the case and removed the object inside.
" A cell phone? What’s a cell phone doing in a place like this?" I whispered to myself.
" Show yourself!" a voice suddenly shouted, and I jumped back into the shadows as a vicious-looking bat creature entered the room. I began to inch my way along the wall - big mistake. The creature heard my movement. With a hiss of rage she reached forward, grabbing my shirt collar and dragging me up close to her.
" P-please d-don’t hurt me," I pleaded, almost dropping the cell phone I held.
" A human! How did you get down here?" she demanded to know, shaking me until I raised up both my hands.
" I - I don’t r-really know," I protested, stumbling when the creature dropped me back to my feet.
" Foolish liar, " she hissed, quickly grabbing my arm and dragging me from the room. When we came to another room, I was the most frightened I’d ever been in my life, for the walls of the room went up higher than I could easily see, and the walls were filled with strange looking identical monsters, from two different groups by the looks of them.
" Necrolai, why have you brought a human to the Underworld?!" a voice thundered through the cavernous room.
I almost fainted when a weird mummy-looking freak entered the room by means of a different opening. He carried a fan, that - like most of his body - was a silvery grayish color.
" She appeared in the locker room. She was trying to steal the Dark Magi Phone," the creature practically spat, her grip on my arm still vice-like and unshakable.
" So what? Kill her and return the phone to the locker room," the silver-gray creature ordered, turning his back on the bat-lady in dismissal.
I closed my eyes and fervently wished for something good to happen to me. After thinking on it a second or so, a purple seal identical to the one I’d touched appeared on the floor of this room.
Not thinking, I managed to duck away from the bat-lady, touching my hand to the seal as it brightened with light. The bat-lady’s screams of rage were the last thing I heard before I was sucked back into the ground again. When I finally dared to open my eyes, I saw that I’d appeared in some sort of forest.
" Where did you come from?" someone demanded to know, and I whirled to find myself face-to-helmet with a suit-clad warrior, though this one looked evil. A glance behind him confirmed my thoughts - all five Rangers were lying on the ground, all but Red and Blue trying to struggle to their feet.
" Like I told bat lady, I don’t know!" I shouted, turning and bolting through the forest. I’d gotten perhaps a hundred yards before a third purple circle appeared in front me. I had no time to dodge it, and ran into it head-on, coming out back inside Rock Porium. Toby was just coming out his office, and seeing me obviously startled him.
" I thought you left with the others," he said, glancing around to see if there was anything wrong with his store.
" I - I did, but I - decided to come back. Danger and me - we don’t get along," I told him, making sure to hide the phone before he could see it.
He moved off to straighten a few CD displays, and I went and sat down in one of the plushly-overstuffed armchairs. Man, this day really sucks. Could anything weirder possibly happen to me? I thought to myself. Me and my big mouth. Almost immediately I felt the phone suddenly vibrate, and I slowly took it out of my jacket, opening it to stare at the screen.
" Rangers!" a woman’s voice called out, and the screen went staticy, switching to a view of the Rangers just getting to their feet where I’d seen them in the forest.
" Koragg’s - too - strong. We - need Daggeron," Pink said after the tiny view switched to her.
" I’m sorry, Rangers. Necrolai suddenly appeared downtown. He has gone to battle her," the strangely familiar woman’s voice replied, just as the screen went staticy again.
I got back to my feet, fear coursing through my veins. " What was that noise?" Toby asked as he poked his head out his office door.
" I’m sorry, Toby, I’ve got to go. If you see Madison and Vida and the guys, tell them something urgent came up," I told him, dashing out of the store and back to the alley I’d been in earlier.
The same purple seal was still there, and it became bigger when I stood beside it. " Mom, dad, if there’s anything I can do to help the protectors of the Earth, I’m gonna do it," I whispered aloud before stepping into the center of the circle. It sucked me into the ground, and I kept my eyes closed and concentrated as hard as I could on the forest I’d been in scant minutes before. I ended up behind some bushes, so I squatted down as I watched what was happening between the Rangers and the creature called Koragg.
It wasn’t a pleasant sight, for Koragg was thoroughly beating the Rangers. Another girl ran onto the scene, standing protectively in front of the fallen Rangers. " You’ll have to go through me to get to them," she boldly said.
I cried out when Koragg fired at the girl, and instead of the blast hitting the girl, it somehow zoomed back around the evil warrior and blasted me instead. I fell back flat on my butt against a tree trunk, my body jerking as black tendrils of mist began snaking over my body.
" Ancestors protect me!" I cried, giving a loud mental scream when the tendrils of light exploded, covering my body in a blanket of black light.
When the light disappeared, so did the pain. I kept my eyes closed until I stood back up, and when I opened my eyes, I nearly screamed out loud. I was now covered in a suit almost exactly like the one the evil warrior wore, though mine seemed to be black where his was purple.
" You still have magic, Gatekeeper. The Master will be pleased to have that magic," I heard Koragg say.
" I didn’t do that," the girl protested.
" Leave - Clare - alone!" I heard Green Ranger shout, and another blast shook the ground.
" Stay out of my business, Green Ranger. There is no honor in interfering in matters that do not concern you," Koragg replied.
" There is also no honor in overpowering those weaker than you when they are already beaten," I suddenly spoke up, wanting to smack myself when Koragg suddenly turned in my direction.
" Honor does not belong to those who hide while their friends are beaten. Show yourself!" Koragg shouted, blasting at the tree beside me.
" If that is what you wish, Knight Wolf, then I shall oblige you," I said, and with a calm I didn’t know I possessed I stepped out from behind the bushes, allowing the sun’s rays to bathe my suit in their light.
" No way!" Yellow Ranger protested as the girl - Clare, obviously - helped him and his teammates to their feet.
" Another Koragg?" Green Ranger asked in a puzzled voice.
" It’s not possible!" Pink Ranger shouted.
Koragg pointed his sword at me, his anger obvious in his stance. " What foolishness has Necrolai done to create you?" he asked.
" Necrolai? You mean she who looks like freaky bat chic? Imperious ordered her to kill me, but some purple circle appeared on the ground, so I escaped," I told him, which was the slightly edited version of the truth.
" The Master will be glad to claim your power," Koragg said, holding his shield up.
" Wolf Attack!" he called out.
" Huh?" is all I had time to say before several wolf-head shaped blasts struck me, kicking up dirt, dust, and smoke. When the cloud disappeared, even I was surprised that I was only shoved back a few feet.
" Impossible!" Koragg shouted in anger.
" No way!" Red shouted.
" Uh, stupid question, but am I the only one who wants to know how that happened?" I asked.
" Is this one of Daggeron’s tests?" Clare asked.
I shrugged my shoulders, then shook my helmet-covered head. " I don’t know any Daggeron. Though I did hear that name mentioned on my new phone by some woman when you were calling her and asking for help," I admitted, clamping my lips shut when I realized what I’d just said.
" I will return, Rangers," Koragg promised them as a purple-looking circle appeared in front of him, disappearing after he walked through it. I looked nervously at the Rangers, who were still a little shaky on their feet.
" Uh, so, what now?" I asked them.
" Rangers, Daggeron needs your help," a woman’s voice said.
" Uh, I may be new here and everything, but these guys look like they need a break," I instantly replied, causing Claire to give me a shocked look.
" Who is this?" the woman’s voice asked, via some kind of Comm-Link thingie in my suit.
" The newbie. Your Ranger friends need some help themselves. Hows about getting them to safety, and getting me a ride to help this Daggeron guy?" I suggested.
" If that is what you wish,, strange. Rangers, come back to Root Core. You too, Clare," the woman’s voice said.
The Rangers turned their helmeted heads to me one last time before Clare helped them off into the forest. " Hey, what about my ride!" I called out. Almost immediately something came up behind me, tossing me through the air. When I landed, I immediately grabbed on to whatever it was I was sitting on, my eyes bulging when I realized I was on a dragon.
" Ahhhh!" I screamed as the dragon took flight. I kept my eyes squeezed shut under my helmet, opening them when I felt the dragon pass through one of the circle’s I’d been through several times in the past thirty minutes.
When I came through on the other side, however, I was alone, and standing on my own two feet. Not only that, but I was on the very edge of some sort of battle. A bunch of the freaky things from bat-lady’s pit where fighting against another Ranger, as was bat-lady herself. " Hey, these don’t seem like fair odds," I mumbled to myself, letting out a piercing whistle as soon as I’d mumbled the words. Every head turned in my direction.
" Koragg?" bat-lady asked in a puzzled voice.
" Nope. Guy in the purple suit went running when I showed up. By the way, I have a question for you. Who in the world do you think would be caught wearing a suit like yours?" I boldly asked the bat-lady, shocked even at my own audacity.
" Hidiacs, destroy the intruder!" bat-lady - Necrolai, I reminded myself - ordered the dozen freaky things. They immediately began congregating around me, and I gulped nervously.

I was just hoping for some sort of help when a black mist suddenly covered my right hand and lower arm, coalescing into a solid shape that looked almost exactly like the shield Koragg had had, except for the colors. I automatically held the shield up, causing the wolf’s head part of the shield to slide up. “ Phantom Blaze!” I shouted, that being the first thing that came to my mind.
I stared dumbly as several dozen blasts of energy erupted from the eye in the shield, striking and destroying the things called Hidiacs. The wolf head slid back down over the eye, and I stared from Necrolai to the shield and back again. “ Now that was weird,” I murmured.
Necrolai angrily released the Ranger as the wings on her lower body extended outward. “ Heeyah!” she screeched as she took flight, quickly leaving the area.
“ Man, that was awesome!” I shouted, turning to face the Ranger, who was just getting to his feet. He retrieved his weapon from the ground, his helmet-covered head turned right towards me.
“ Come with me, and I will not have to force your compliance,” he ordered me, and I was dumbstruck.
“ Say what? Look, dude, whoever the heck you are, I just helped save your life. What’s with the orders and the serious tone?” I wanted to know, taking a few steps back when the Ranger raised his weapon in my direction.
My eyebrows shot skyward when the lid of the lamp popped up, and a freaky-looking cat head poked out of the lamp. It saw me, and promptly ducked back inside the lamp. “ Jenji, do you sense something?” the Ranger asked the lamp, and I heard a confirmatory “yes” from inside the lamp.
“ The - the Phantom Knight. Calindor always wanted to become it, but he never had the power,” the cat spoke up.
“ Who’s Calindor?” I wanted to know, just as the Ranger fired the lamp at me, knocking me flat on my ass. My shield disappeared, and as I was struggling to get my breath back from the surprise attack when the Ranger yanked me to my feet.
“ Hey, have a little respect for a lady, would ya?” I grumbled, angrily yanking out of the Ranger’s grip. He pointed the lamp at me again, and I gave a snort of disgust. “ Some thanks I get. I’ll go with you this time, but next time you can save your own sorry ass,” I spat.
“ Malorium Orvious,” the Ranger said, and I became slightly sick when my body dissolved into billions of tiny black lights, which shot across the sky. My vision was nonexistent with me being like this, and I was quite happy when my feet touched back down on solid ground. However, I wasn’t happy to find the Ranger pointing his lamp at me. Glancing around revealed that I was in a strange room, and it also revealed Clare and the other Rangers, who were still morphed.
Clare started to come towards me, but the Ranger holding his lamp at me shook his head. “ We do not know if this warrior is friend or foe, Clare. She is giving off strange readings, and Jenji said she is known as the Phantom Knight,” the Ranger adamantly said.
“ Daggeron, did you find out anything about the Phantom Ring?” a woman’s voice asked. My heart skipped a beat when a woman in flowing white clothing entered the room. Her gaze came ti rest immediately on me. “ The Phantom Knight??” she whispered in shock, even as she came closer.
I immediately started backing away, for some strange images started flashing through my mind. Among those images was one of the woman before me kneeling by another woman, though the woman before me was much younger in the image.
“ Udonna, find, my daughter. Diora,” the other woman was saying before she had to stop to catch her breath. “ Blaze,” was the last thing the woman said before she disappeared, and when that image - the last one, and lasting only about five seconds - flashed through mind, I backed into the Ranger behind in my haste to get away.
“ No,” I protested, causing the woman to give me a puzzled look.
“ Daggeron, let the girl go. Rangers, I need to talk with her, whoever she may be,” the woman in white told the Rangers beside her. They started to leave, but I shook my head.
“ I - you - Niella!” I shouted in protest, having a hard time finding words to speak. The woman’s face took on a new look when I mentioned that name.
“ How would you know my sister’s name?” she demanded to know.
“ Udonna - Niella. Necrolai, and - and Diora,” I stammered, my mind a little scrambled after seeing the images I’d just seen.
The woman’s face turned a little white at my words, and Claire had to come steady her. “ I think it’s about time you revealed yourself, Phantom Knight. I don’t like the reaction Udonna is having at your words,” the Ranger behind me said, and I gulped nervously.
“ If - if Blue and Pink will, th-then I will,” I stammered, at last managing to get something intelligible to come out of my mouth. The Ranger behind me nodded at Pink and Blue, and they immediately powered down, causing my mouth to drop open behind my helmet.
“ Madison? Vida? I’ll be damned, I thought there was something weird about you two when I first met you,” I spoke up.
“ Your turn,” Madison told me.
“ First, let me say that I think you and your lady friend here might want to sit down,” I told them, and the lady in white actually did just that, the girls and the other three Rangers choosing to remain standing. “ Fine then. Phantom Knight, Power Down,” I said, and my suit shimmered and shattered off of me.
It was Madison and Vida’s turn to be shocked. “ Blaze?” Madison practically squeaked.
“ How’d you get to be a Knight?” Vida wanted to know.
“ Probably with this,” the Ranger behind me said as he tossed something to the woman in white. I saw that it was the phone I’d had earlier.
“ Hey, give that back. Finders keepers,” I protested, reaching to grab the phone back from the woman. The ring on the necklace around my neck slipped into view, and the woman’s eyes became riveted on it.

“ Diora,” she whispered, her eyes moving over my face in shock.
“ How did you get the Phantom Ring?” Clare asked me, and I shrugged.
“ My adopted mom and dad said it was the only thing beside my baby clothes that my birth parents had left me with when they found me on their hotel door step. Can I please have my phone back now?” I asked them. I wasn’t at all prepared when Red, Blue, and Yellow powered down to reveal Vida and Madison’s guy friends, nor was I prepared when the woman in white slowly got up and took my hands in her own.
“ Diora, I have been searching many years for you. My sister missed you dearly,” the woman whispered.
“ Udonna, do you really think this girl is Diora?” the Ranger behind me asked as he stepped up beside the white-clad woman. He had already demorphed as well, and was staring at me and the woman he called Udonna.
“ She has the Phantom Ring, and she has Niella’s eyes. She is Niella’s child,” Udonna firmly said, and I gave them both puzzled looks.
“ Whoa. You mean you guys knew my birth parents? Do you know where they are?” I asked, and Udonna let out a sad sigh.
“ Your mother - my sister - died helping to seal the gates of the Underworld. Your father is - was - Calindor. He is now evil, and calls himself Imperious,” Udonna told me.
“ Wait just a minute. You mean that freaky Egyptian mummy-looking reject is my dad? No way, he ordered me killed!” I exclaimed.
“ He does not know you are alive, but judging by the fact that you became what he always wanted to be, then he will know soon enough. You must begin training with the other Rangers,” she insisted.
“ Training? What do you mean by training?” I asked.
“ Martial arts and magic. In our fight against the Master’s forces, those are two things you must have knowledge of,” Madison told me.
“ Magic? Yeah, right. I don’t exactly believe in magic. Kinda something that most people say doesn’t exist,” I retorted.
The lamp on the table - set there by the Ranger at Udonna’s side - suddenly started wobbling, and some sort of white cloud erupted from the lamp’s spout. Immediately, the cloud solidified, and I was left staring at freakishly big car, who was dressed in some freakishly weird clothes. Giving a yelp of surprise, I jumped back.
“ What the f - what is that?” I squeaked, almost unable to find my voice.
“ Don’t be frightened, it’s just Jenji, Daggeron’s genie,” Madison told me.
“ You’re afraid of me?” the cat asked, and I hollered and stumbled backwards.
“ It talks? You guys have a talking cat genie thing?” I asked in disbelief.
“ Yeah, he can grant you wishes,” the guy name Chip piped up, and Vida elbowed him the ribs.
“ That true?” I asked the cat.
“ Sure, I can grant any wish you have, except when it comes to killing people,” Jenji admitted.
“ Fine. Then I wish to know what powers I have. I also wish to know whether I’m good or evil,” I calmly said, folding my arms across my chest.
When the Rangers gave each other startled looks and started looking around, I was puzzled. “ What, am I invisible or something?” I asked them.
“ You kind of are,” Chip said, and I turned immediately to the nearby mirror.
“ Ahhhhh!” I screamed. I looked down and couldn’t even my own body! “ Ahhhhh!” I screamed again, just as my body - err - returned to visibility.
“ Cool, the power of invisibility!” Chip exclaimed.
Jenji seemed a bit nervous, though. “ She also has both dark and light magic in her. She can control a good deal of each, though the powers have to be worked on. If you’ll excuse me now, I have a cat nap to catch up on,” the cat genie said before returning right back to his lamp on the table.
“ Dark and light magic? Udonna, is that possible?” Madison wanted to know.
“ Apparently so,” Udonna replied as Clare came towards me.
“ If you’re Niella’s daughter, then that - that makes you my older sister,” she whispered.
“ Uhhh, yeah. Guess it does. Weird, huh? I’m new in town, yet I find out I have a sister, an aunt, find out my birth mother’s dead, and my birth father’s the proverbial picture of evil incarnate. Swell, ain’t it?” I sarcastically quipped. Nonetheless, I gave my half-sister a hug.
“ What are we going to do about her adopted parents? They’ll want to know what’s happened to her when they wake up,” Madison sensibly pointed out to Udonna.
“ I shall have to tell them that I am Diora’s aunt, and that her birth parents are dead. Hopefully they will allow me to stay in contact with her,” Udonna told Madison, reaching forward suddenly and giving me a tight hug. “ I’ve missed you for many years, my niece. Had I known you were alive, I would have come for you years ago,” she whispered. Hesitantly, I hugged her back.
“ Uh, okay. Look, I appreciate all the love and all, but I have a question,” I said, and Udonna drew back to look at me.
“ What is it you wish to know?” Udonna asked.
“ Well, among other things, I want to know where in the world did you get that dragon that took me to that circle thing? And also, where can I get one?” I asked, earning a laugh from all five of the younger Rangers.
“ His name’s Fireheart, and he’s the last dragon there is. He thinks of Clare as his mom,” Xander piped up, and I laughed for the first time since encountering Koragg in the forest that first time less than an hour earlier.
I stopped laughing when something started nagging me. Curious, I gave the guy next Udonna a closer look. “ Hey, I’ve seen you somewhere before. You’re the guy that pulled me to the safety of Toby’s store,” I said, and he nodded.
“ I am,” was his reply.
“ Well, even considering how you treated me after I saved you, I still owe you a thank you. What Ranger are you? The other colors are kinda obvious,” I casually said.
“ I am Daggeron, the Solaris Knight, with the power of the sun. I apologize for my behavior. It is an honor to meet a fellow Knight, Diora, especially the daughter of the Gatekeeper,” he said with a formal bow.
“ Gee, thanks. So, what do you guys do for fun around here? My - my parents are still in the hospital, and I can’t see them for another four days,” I informed Udonna.
“ We practice our magic, and we learn things about how to properly use the magic,” Nick told me.
“ Oh, okay. Well, being the newbie here, how do I start out doing this whole magic thing?” I asked, causing Madison to giggle at the look on Daggeron’s face.
“ I will take you training in a few minutes. I must first talk with Udonna alone,” Daggeron said, gently grabbing Udonna’s arm before guiding her out of the room. This left me alone with Clare and the Rangers, which left me feeling a little awkward. Madison was the first of the five to step forward, giving me a quick hug.
“ Welcome to the team, Blaze,” she told me before Chip came over, a grin on his face.
He, too, gave me a hug. “ When you called Necrolai ‘she who looks like freaky bat chic’, I almost actually laughed. I’d love to see you say that to her face,” he boyishly told me, and I grinned.
“ Maybe I will call her that, if she attacks again,” I told him as the other Rangers hugged me.
“ She will attack again, of that we can all be certain. Come, my carpet is waiting to take us to the practice area,” Daggeron said as he came back into the room.
“ Carpet? You wouldn’t by chance mean flying carpet would ya?” I asked, and he actually nodded before handing me my phone back and leading me out of the room.

The second we stepped out into the open, we were whisked away into the air, and I fell flat on my butt. I made the mistake of looking down, and realized we were a good fifteen feet of the ground, and moving at a rather fast pace - and on a magic carpet no less! I kept my eyes closed after that, opening them when the carpet came to a complete stop and Daggeron touched my arm.
After jumping off of the carpet, I looked around, not really surprised to find myself in a small clearing in the woods. “ So, what’s first on the agenda?” I asked Daggeron.
“ We will begin your training with tai chi, to center your mind and body, which will allow you to concentrate on your fighting skills and power, which you will learn after you have passed this lesson,” Daggeron said. I actually groaned.
Tai chi sounded too new agey to me, but I went along with what the guy said. We practiced some of the same moves over and over, and I was completely relaxed by the time Daggeron called an end to the practicing. “ Aww, man, I was just getting into it,” I protested.
“ You have passed that test, Phantom Knight. Now you must pass the broom test,” he said.
“ Broom test?” I asked, confused, until a broom suddenly showed up, flying in lazy unstraight patterns in the air nearly twenty feet above my head.
“ You must use your morpher to lasso the broom,” was all he would tell me. I withdrew my phone, opening it and pointing it at the broom.
After following the broom’s movements for almost ten minutes, I shot a blast of light from the phone. The beam hit near the top of the broom handle, and the broom fell down straight into my hands. Grinning like a jackass eating briars - as my adopted mother would say - I turned and proudly faced Daggeron. “ What next? More tai chi?” I sarcastically asked.
My phone rang at that moment, so I opened it back up. “ Um, hello?” I asked, not knowing who would be contacting me.
“ Blaze, get back here, pronto. Necrolai and Koragg have kidnapped Fireheart, and they’re threatening to destroy him if the rest of us don’t show up at their specified location,” Madison hurriedly told me.
“ We’re on the way,” I promised her. Daggeron summoned his carpet, and we both hopped on, flying back as swiftly as we could to where Madison had called from. She and the other Rangers were trying to comfort a distraught Clare, who was rocking back and forth while sitting on a fallen log.
“ When do you have to be there?” I asked Madison, and she glanced at her watch.
“ In five minutes. Koragg has challenged everyone but you to a fight with him and Imperious’ latest monster creation. Udonna wants you to stay here with her, where it’s safe,” Madison informed me.
I waited until they Rangered up, then I headed inside after them. When they disappeared into one of the walls - which had their respective colors on some sort of slots in it - I turned to Udonna. Daggeron had stayed outside to wait on the rest of the Rangers to appear. “ Why can’t I go help them?” I demanded to know.
“ You do not know the ways of magic, Diora. You must stay here,” she told me before moving to watch the fight in her crystal ball. Clare sat nearby, still distraught, so I slumped onto a stool across from where Udonna was standing, on the opposite side of the crystal ball.
It wasn’t long before images of the battle started flashing through the ball, and I raised my upper lip in disgust when I saw how badly Koragg and his monster were beating the Rangers. My eyes grew wide with fright when I saw Imperious himself appear on the scene. With a single word, a black and silverish-colored tornado swept towards the Rangers, sending them flying through the air and onto the ground.
“ That tears it! I’m not just gonna sit around here and watch my new teammates get the crap beat out of them!” I angrily shouted. My cell phone gave out a strange beep, and when I looked at it, the symbol on the inside glowed with black light, as did three of the numbers. I took on a different stance, copying what I’d seen the others do earlier.
“ Phanto Mysto, Magical Raijio!” I called out after entering the number code that had lit up. Black tendrils of light surrounded me and exploded, leaving me in my Phantom Knight suit. I turned to Udonna. “ What’s the fastest way to get to wherever they are?” I wanted to know of her.
“ I can teleport you there, Diora, but it could be deadly for you,” Udonna protested, even as she raised her hands and began chanting.
“ Thank you,” I told her as my body began dissolving int black lights again. I wasn’t even conscious of where I was going, but I was extremely grateful when I landed on my feet again. I glanced around, noting the tall buildings not far from where I was.
Even as I noted those, something came crashing into me, knocking me flat on the ground. By the time I realized it was Madison, Vida had wound up beside her sister. Both had demorphed from the blow they’d received, and both groaned as they desperately tried to climb back to their feet.
“ Blaze, help us,” Madison whispered when she saw me, and I nodded as I got up, my shield materializing in my hand. Xander and Chip came flying by my head, but I didn’t have time to help them, because the monster that’d tossed them had spotted me.
“ Me like Rangers!” it screeched, and I glared at it from under my visor.
“ Phantom Blaze!” I called out, thrusting my shield forward. When the dust and smoke cleared, all that remained of the freak was scattered bits of gooey body parts. Necrolai, who was battling Nick, and Koragg, who was battling Daggeron, both turned to face me, tossing the Rangers they were fighting to the ground.
“ She is the one that stole the Dark Magi Phone,” Necrolai told the thing standing beside her, and when he turned around, I glared angrily at him.
“ Who might you be?” he asked me.
“ I am Diora, the daughter of the Gatekeeper. I am the Phantom Knight. What’s the matter, daddy-o? You’re looking a little gray around the gills. Age seems to not be agreeing with you,” I sarcastically sneered, causing Koragg to actually laugh.
“ Shut up, you fool! Daughter or not, you will pay for stealing from me,” Imperious told me as he raised his fan and fired. I braced for the attack, but I was shocked when Daggeron threw himself in front of the blast, his suit shattering from around him as he fell to the ground unconscious.
“ Monster!” I screamed at Imperious after making sure Madison and Vida had gotten Daggeron and a badly beaten Nick to safety.
“ Dear child, you have no idea of what kind of power Imperious wields. Shall I destroy her for you?” Necrolai asked Imperious, but he shook his head.
“ No. You and Koragg may retreat. Take the dragon with you,” Imperious ordered Necrolai, and it was then that I noticed Fireheart nearby, his body chained to the ground.
“ I don’t think so. Malorium Orvious, Rangers and Dragon to Rootcore !” I shouted. The ground rumbled and the chains fell to the earth as Fireheart and the Rangers all disappeared
Necrolai and Koragg were quick to leave, and finally it was just me and Imperious. I faced him with a calm I had no idea I had. “ You are very powerful, my daughter. Come and fight by my side. Together, you, the Master, and I could rule the surface world!” Imperious exclaimed. My nostrils flared up and my eyebrows came down, a sure sign to my friends back in Creighton Falls that I was royally pissed off.
“ You think I’d want to rule by your side, you mummified Underworld reject? Not a chance in hell! You didn’t deserve my birth mother’s love, and you sure as hell don’t deserve to call me daughter!” I screamed.
“ Very impressive show of anger, Phantom Knight. Let us see how you do against dark magic,” he said, saying one word and pointing his fan at me, I held my shield up just as a barrage of lightning bolts struck. I was knocked back on my butt, but except for a bruised backside and a little pain here and there, I felt fine. I angrily got back to my feet as the dust and smoke cleared.
When Imperious saw me standing there, he took a half-step back. “ Impossible!” he hissed, and I smiled under my helmet.
“ Let me give you a bit of your own medicine, Imperious. Ulilayo!” I called out, thrusting my hand forward. Lightning arced down all around Imperious, with several bolts striking him and forcing him to retreat.
“ I’ll be back, Phantom Knight,” he promised me as a dark circle opened up behind him.
“ I’ll be waiting, you sorry bastard!” I shouted after him, just before the circle disappeared

As soon as he was gone, my shield disappeared. Man, I gotta learn to control that, I thought to myself as I looked around. The civilians had obviously cleared out of the area the minute Imperious and his little entourage had appeared, so I didn’t have to worry about getting anyone to safety. When something nudged my back, I t turned and laughed when I found Daggeron’s carpet floating in the air before me.
“ I’ll be damned,” I murmured before jumping up onto the carpet. It just continued floating there, so I tilted my head, puzzled. “ Uh, back to Rootcore. And put a rush on it,” I said, feeling more than foolish for talking to a carpet.
I felt stupid as well, because the carpet took off like a bolt of greased lightning, speeding through a black Mystic Circle so quickly I didn’t have time to even blink before we were back in the Magical Forest and on our speedy little way to Rootcore.
When the carpet came to a stop, I slowly stepped off onto the ground, my legs shaky from the ride. Udonna came hurrying out, as did Clare. “ Diora, are you all right?” Udonna asked me as I demorphed and took her arm.
“ Pr-pretty good. A word of advice, though. Never tell that carpet to get you somewhere and to put a rush on it,” I told them, and Clare gave me a tiny smile as the three of us entered Rootcore.
Instead of staying in the room with the crystal ball, Udonna led me into a different room. When I saw the Rangers either lying or sitting down on separate cot-like beds, anger for what Imperious had done surged up within me, and I probably would’ve attempted to go after him then and there if Udonna hadn’t placed a restraining hand on my arm and led me over to where Daggeron and Nick lay. Nick was moaning as a concerned Madison applied a gauze wrapping to one of the wounds.
“ Madison, you should be resting,” Udonna lightly chided the blue Ranger, and rather reluctantly Madison returned to laying down on her own cot. When I knelt by Daggeron, I was shocked to find his body beaten and bruised far worse than those of the others. He was also the only one still unconscious.
“ When he took the blast meant for you, it greatly damaged his body, and his powers. Even I cannot seem to wake him,” Udonna said.
“ Have you tried using the genie?” I asked her, just as Jenji himself came walking in.
“ I can’t kill people, and I can’t heal them when they’re this badly hurt,” he told me as he took a seat on the stool next to Daggeron’s cot.
I groaned in anger. “ Then what the h - what the heck are we supposed to do? Do we need dark magic to help heal him? Because according to the talking cat I have dark magic at my disposal,” I spoke up, but Udonna shook her head.
“ It would take a great source of power to heal him. Unfortunately, the only beings capable of such magic are Imperious, Koragg, Catastros, and - and Unitastros,” Udonna hesitantly added.
“ Imperious would rather die - not that I wouldn’t be happy to oblige him - and Koragg seems to have this thing about honor. He’d take too long to trick. Who’re Catastros and Unitastros?” I queried.
“ Catastros was - is - the most fearsome horse in the land. No man or group of men could tame him. As the gates were being sealed, evil reached up and dragged Catastros into the depths of the Underworld. Ever since, Catastros has been under Koragg’s control."
" Unitastros is the only creature that could ever hope to equal Catastros in strength, and she was the only equine - though a unicorn - that was able to get near him without getting chased away. Catastros listens only to Koragg, and Unitastros has been in and out of hiding ever since the Great Battle,” Udonna said.
“ I’ll have to go find this Unitastros then,” I said in a solemn voice.
“ But you can’t. Dear niece, no one has ever attempted this. You would die if you tried. Unitastros was last seen in the Sumerian Forest, a lethal place even for those humans of great power,” Udonna told me.
“ You may be my aunt, Udonna, and you may be one hell of a sorceress, but I’ve got to go. None of the other Rangers are in any shape to go with me,” I retorted.
“ I’ll go. I’m the least injured of us, and I owe Daggeron a favor,” Madison quickly spoke. Ignoring Udonna’s protests, she came to stand beside me.
“ Udonna, Unitastros may be Daggeron’s only chance at a full recovery,” Clare quietly spoke up. Unable to protest against all three of us, Udonna finally gave in.
With a big sigh, she gave me and Madison quick hugs. “ You will find traces of Unitastros near the Great Spider’s Web. You must be careful, and never let your guard down. I wish you luck, Rangers,” Udonna whispered as Madison and I quickly left the room. When we were standing in front of the Crystal Ball, we took out our morphers, punching in the same numbers, and taking up similar stances.
“ Magical Source, Mystic Force!” Madison called out.
“ Phanto Mysto, Magical Raijio!” I shouted.
Our signature Ranger colors surrounded us and exploded, morphing us into our respective Ranger suits in less than three seconds. Madison grabbed her broom and disappeared into the thing in the wall, and I ran outside and jumped onto Daggeron’s carpet, flying it up almost to the top of the tree to wait on Madison.
The second she came out on her Mystic Racer - man, I wish I had one of those! - we were off, speeding through and above the trees at a rate that was almost equal to how fast the carpet had gone earlier. It wasn’t long before the Racer and the carpet came to a gradual complete stop, allowing Madison and me to dismount.
The Racer disappeared, but the carpet settled down onto the ground, instantly becoming camouflaged. “ I gotta get me one of those things,” I mumbled to myself as Madison led the way into the forest.
* * * * *
“ That’s the tenth time in the past hour that I’ve almost fallen into a mud bog. God, what’s with this place? Why can’t we just point our morphers at that clearing and say ‘Unitastros appear?’” I impatiently asked Madison as I tugged a piece of wet vine off of my suit.
“ There’s no need for magic,” Madison whispered.
“ And you say that because?” I asked her.
“ Because Unitastros is in that clearing already,” Madison replied, forcing me to turn slowly around and stare in the direction she pointed.
“ Yes! Now all we have to do is capture it, and get it to heal Daggeron!” I hissed in excitement. Another big mistake coming from my big mouth.
Unitastros heard my voice, and when she looked up, she whinnied and fired a beam of energy from her horn. She whinnied again and charged right at us. Madison turned tail to flee - apparently the beast had scared her - but thanks to my clumsiness I fell flat on my back when I tripped over an above-the-ground tree root.
Unitastros reared up on her hind legs, pawing the air near my helmet-covered face. Almost on instinct, I demorphed, holding my arms up in defense. “ I mean you no harm, Unitastros. I came to ask for your help,” I said, closing my eyes and waiting for one of her hooves to strike me dead. When nothing happened, I opened my eyes and looked up, startled to find the unicorn standing there just staring at me. Slowly, I got to my feet, careful not to startle the beautiful beast.
“ I am Bl - I am Diora, daughter of Niella. I came t ask you to help my friend Daggeron. He was badly wounded when he took a blast meant for me. Will you please help me?” I pleaded, slowly reaching a hand out towards Unitastros’ mane. As I touched my hand to her mane and moved my hand to rub her neck, the horse nodded and whinnied at me. A beam of light came from her horn, and when it solidified in my hand I was holding a small vial of black-purple and white liquid. Some strange sort of instructions were wrapped around the bottle.
Sighing in relief, I gave the horse a tentative hug. “ Thank you, Unitastros. Thank you. I owe you one,” I whispered to the horse before running back to where I knew the carpet was waiting; though on the way back there I managed to avoid all the bogs, thank goodness. A worried Madison was pacing back and forth, stopping only when she aw me.
“ Did she decide to help you?” she asked, and I nodded, holding up the vial.
“ Yeah. We gotta get back to Rootcore, and fast,” I told her as Daggeron’s carpet revealed itself to us. Madison and I easily hopped on, and I actually grinned at my now unmorphed friend. “ Hold on tight. Carpet, back to Rootcore, and put a major rush on it,” I told the carpet. I myself had to grab on to the edges of the carpet as it went zooming through the forest. We moved so fast that we were back at Rootcore’s entrance in less than five minutes.
“ That - was intense,” Madison said, and I agreed as we hurried inside. Udonna met us at the door to what I had dubbed the sick room.
“ Daggeron has gotten worse. His skin is dangerously pale,” Udonna worriedly told me as I handed her the vial and hurried to Daggeron’s side.

thought i'd post this. this is about how the Phantom Knight looks. basically looks like a black Koragg (though i couldn't alter the suit the exact way i wanted, the waist would be a little slimmer). (based off a Koragg suit someone on PRE did)

My gaze remained on him as Udonna chanted the instructions, then poured the vial of liquid down Daggeron’s throat. He would’ve choke had not Udonna rubbed his throat to help him swallow. His hands twitched several times, and it was a full five minutes before his eyes fluttered open.
“ Hot damn, he’s alive!” I happily crowed, giving everyone a happy grin as Daggeron’s eyes finally focused on Udonna.
“ What - happened?” he rasped.
“ You took a blast meant for Diora, and you wound up here,” Udonna told him, prompting him to quickly sit up.
“ Where is she?” Daggeron asked, and I took his hand in my own.
“ I’m right here, Daggeron. Madison and I just got back from the Sumerian Forest. I had to go ask Unitastros for help, and she was gracious enough to agree. I owe her a great favor,” I whispered, embarrassed when Daggeron placed his right hand on my right one.
“ And I owe you,” he whispered.
“ You took a blast meant for me, and it almost killed you. I think we’re even now. And you need to rest,” I added, prompting him to slowly lay back down on the bed.
“ I think all of you Rangers should go back to the surface world. Give Daggeron a while to rest before he restarts training,” Udonna suggested, and the other five Rangers reluctantly left the room. I started to leave, since Udonna and Clare had left ahead of the Rangers, but Daggeron called me back.
“ I want you to come back tomorrow, young Knight. I will tell you stories of your birth mother, and I want to teach you a few spells,” Daggeron told me.
I blushed a little. “ Sure, that would be - nice. Sleep well,” I told him, giving him a quick peck on the forehead before hurrying from the room.
“ He - uh - he wants me to come back tomorrow so he can tell me about - about my birth mother. He also wants to teach me a few spells,” I stammered to Udonna.
“ I would like that as well, Diora. Madison and Vida are waiting on you outside,” Udonna informed me, and I nodded politely to her before leaving Root Core. I found Vida and Madison standing by a tree.
“ How are we supposed to get to your house?” I asked the sisters.
“ Tree traveling,” Vida said, touching the tree and instantly getting sucked inside. I took a step back, but Madison took my hand, drawing me back towards the tree.
“ It’s a bit scary the first few times, but you get used to it. The boys already went ahead, and they’re taking your bags to my parents’ house. Come on,” Madison said, placing a hand on the tree and disappearing the same way her sister had.
“ Well, here goes,” I mumbled, hesitantly touching the tree. My body did the same thing Vida and Madison’s did, and despite my fear, I couldn’t open my mouth to shout. I was actually traveling through trees!
That’s not exactly something you talk about over the dinner table, or in the supermarket. I sucked in a deep breath when my journey came to an end, and I stumbled out of a tree. Madison was waiting on me, and Vida had gone inside the house we were behind.
“ Wow, that was intense,” I murmured, causing the blue Ranger to laugh as she led me inside the house.
Luckily, Mr. and Mrs. Rocca weren’t home, so Vida and Madison were able to quickly help me set up my things in the guest bedroom when the boys arrived.
Since we were supposed to take it easy after that fight - well, the others were supposed to - we all just headed for the rec room in the basement. Since most of the games down there were only two player, we all square off against each other: Me versus Madison at table hockey, Vida versus Chip at the Xbox, and Nick versus Xander at the motorcycle racing game.
After about an hour of playing table hockey - during which we played ten games to ten points, and I only won half the time - I decided to take a break, so I left the basement and went outside. For some reason, I got to thinking about my adopted -parents being in the hospital, and my birth mother being dead, and it made me feel kinda melancholy.
It also made me feel a little, I don’t know, iffy, so I returned to the house to play the Rocca sisters’ Playstation 2 system, which also happened to be located back in the basement.
I played for almost two solid hours, whooping vampire and undead butt on the Buffy game Madison had gotten for her last birthday. I was actually unhappy when I had to quit playing, but that only happened because Mr. And Mrs. Rocca had finally gotten home, and they had brought supper for all six of us.
“ You have no idea how much I appreciate you letting me stay here for a few days, Mr. and Mrs. Rocca. I’m sure my father will find some way to repay you,” I told them as I hungrily dug into the mashed potatoes and gravy. Mmmm, KFC, I thought to myself.
“ I’m glad to do it, Blaze. Whether you realized it or not, your father moving here to Briarwood made him my boss. I figured I owed him a favor for not downsizing the office like a lot of other companies have done,” Mr. Rocca told me.
“ I’ll be sure to put in a good word with him. And Mrs. Rocca, did you make that cake that’s in the fridge?” I asked, causing Mrs. Rocca to smile.
“ Yes I did, dear. It’s a recipe my own mother used to us,” she replied.
“ Well, she and you are great cooks. If my dad ever has a company cookout, I’m requesting a cake like that,” I told her. I’d eaten a piece of the cake on the way up to putting my bags in my temporary room, and the cake had been delicious.
“ Thank you dear. I’m sorry we didn’t get back until nine o’clock. I had to fix something that went wrong at my job,” she told her daughters.
“ That’s okay, mom. C’mon, Blaze. Let’s go watch TV,” Vida suggested, as she and I were the first ones finished with supper.
“ Okay. Thanks again,” I told her parents as I followed her to my bedroom. We sat on the bed for nearly two hours, watching a new Last Comic Standing episode. I don’t remember being sleepy, but it seemed like one minute I was laughing at a skinny Mexican man’s joke, and the next minute I’m climbing into bed, yawning. My head had barely hit the pillow, and then I was out like a light.
* * * * *
I blew out a frustrated breath, blowing a stray strand of hair out of my face. Four days had passed since I’d gotten the medicine to help Daggeron, and I’d been coming to Rootcore every day to learn new spells. The other Rangers had been learning the spells with me, although they were much better at it.
I stepped back as Xander stood up, thrusting his Magi Staff forward and causing two green vines to suddenly appear from the tree above. He started to grab one of them, but Daggeron held a hand up, taking one of them in his own hands and motioning for me to take the other.
Since Daggeron and I were the only ones still unmorphed, I placed my morpher back in its holder, taking the vine Daggeron offered me. We nodded to each other, backed up a few feet, and jumped forward, the motion causing us to go swinging forward.
Daggeron let go at the right time and landed easily on his feet. I, however, accidentally let go too quickly and went flying, landing right in his arms. Of course, that set my face to blushing, and I ducked my head a little as he set me down and the others came rushing over to us. “ I really need to practice that,” I mumbled.
“ You did better than the first time. At least you didn’t land in the little ditch, like Daggeron did when Xander created a bad vine that one time,” Madison spoke up helpfully, and I couldn’t help but laugh as the others demorphed.
“ That must’ve been a sight!” I giggled.
Nick’s morpher chose that moment to beep, and we quickly became quiet as he took out his morpher. “ Nick here,” Nick said.
“ Nick, take the other four Rangers to downtown Briarwood. There’s dark magic at work there,” Udonna’s voice said.
“ But what about Daggeron and me?” I spoke up.
“ Diora, your adopted parents are beginning to wake up. I want Daggeron to escort you to the hospital. He may join the Rangers if he is needed,” Udonna replied before she cut the connection.
“ Ready!” Nick called out as he and the others raise their morphers.
“ Magical Source, Mystic Force!” the five called out, morphing into the core part of the Mystic Force Power Rangers. Their Mystic Racers appeared in the air over their heads, and the Rangers mounted them and went zooming off, leaving me alone with Daggeron for the moment. We hurried back to Rootcore, where I changed quickly into some clean clothes before following him as he teleported us straight to the hospital.

“ You know you shouldn’t reveal your Ranger identity to your adopted parents, Diora,” Daggeron reminded me as we hurried down the hospital hallway.
“ I know,” I replied before bursting into my parents’ bedroom. I was surprised to find them both sitting on the edge of one of the beds, my dad’s arm around my mother’s shoulder.
“ Mom, Dad, I’m so glad you’re okay!” I exclaimed, giving them a quick but gentle hug.
“ Blaze, thank God. We didn’t know where you were until Dr. Hanrahan came in a moment ago and told us where you’d been,” Mother whispered as she and Dad hugged me back.
“ And who is this?” Dad asked as Daggeron stepped up behind me.
“ Uh, he’s - um - he’s my teacher. Yeah, he’s been teaching me how to - work with herbs and stuff. He’s a great cook, and you’ve said yourself you can never cook too well,” I stuttered, trying to come up with a lie I thought they’d believe. I was one of the few people who could honestly say they’d never lied to their parents - except maybe the times when I’d cut myself rollerblading when I was five - and lying to them now was hard.
“ Nice to meet you then. I’m glad my daughter has been learning such an important skill. She hasn’t seemed to interested in cooking in the past,” Dad said, and I noticed immediately the slightly suspicious glint in his eyes.
Daggeron reached out to shake my father’s proffered hand, but stumbled when an explosion suddenly shook the hospital. “ What in the world?” mother whispered, ducking against my father when a second explosion shook the walls, sending both mirrors in the room crashing to the floor.
“ Not another monster attack!” my dad exclaimed, just as a third explosion hit. The windows exploded, sending glass slivers rocketing all the way across the room. My father threw his body over my mother’s body. Daggeron’s morpher beeped, so he ran into the bathroom, even as a nurse came running into the room.
“ The Power Rangers are getting beaten! The staff is thinking about evacuating the hospital because the fight gets too close. We need every able-bodied person we can find,” the nurse said, all in one breath.
When Daggeron - already morphed - came rushing out of the bathroom and took a flying leap out the broken window, the nurse gasped and fainted right on the spot. Mother and Father hadn’t even noticed him gone, they were so frightened. I grabbed my parents’ hands, hurrying them into long white bathrobes, a pair of which had been hanging in their tiny little closet.
“ Mom, Dad, I need to get the two of you to safety,” I told them, just as a fourth explosion shook the hospital.
I heard more windows shatter, and I heard the simultaneous wails of mothers and newborn infants coming from the maternity ward, which was just down the hall from my parents’ room. Something snapped within me, and I turned to my parents even as I withdrew my morpher.
“ Blaze, what is that?” Dad asked as I strode over to the broken window.
“ What are you doing?! Sweetie, please, get away from there. We need to get to safety so the - the Power Rangers or whoever can deal with the attack,” Mom told me, but I shook my head. The door to the room was shut - the nurse had closed it for some reason, so I at least had some privacy.
“ Mom, Dad, I don’t have time to explain. I only have time to act,” I told them, punching in my code on my morpher. “ Phanto Mysto, Magical Raijio!” I called out, standing still as my suit formed onto my body, which took the usual less than three seconds. I heard my parents gasp, so I turned my head briefly towards them.
“ I’ll be back. I’ve got friends to save,” I told them as I, too, took a flying leap out of the window. Luckily, Daggeron’s carpet caught me five feet below the windowsill. Already knowing where its owner was, the carpet went zooming forward, zigzagging up and down streets until it came to a stop some fifty feet above the ground.
The carpet just floated there, allowing me to watch as my friends - in their Titan Megazord formation - were knocked to the ground, causing them to separate into their individual Titan forms. At the same time, the Solar Streak Megazord - which Udonna and the others had told me plenty about, as had they told me of the Titan Megazord - was knocked to the ground, sending Daggeron flying through the air.
I didn’t catch him in time, so I made the carpet move down to where he’d fallen, slowly lifting him up on the carpet. He was unmorphed, but luckily he was still conscious. Jenji popped out of the lamp, kneeling on the carpet beside his long-time friend.
“ Jenji, I wish to have my shield and to know what Koragg uses to make himself grow,” I told him, as the Titan Megazord reformed.
“ The others destroyed the monster already. You can’t defeat Koragg,” he protested, and I angrily grabbed Daggeron’s lamp, rubbing it and repeating my wish.
“ I - grant - your wish,” Jenji reluctantly told me, touching my shoulder. My shield appeared in my hands, and I jumped off the carpet, running around to the front of the building, which was behind the Titan Megazord and facing Koragg in his centaur form.
“ Phanto Vilastow Mysto!” I called out, tightly clutching my shield in my right hand. I felt a strange sensation go through me, and all of a sudden I began shooting up - and up, and up, and up - growing until I was a bit taller than Xander as the Mystic Minotaur was.
“ You mess with one Ranger, you mess with the rest,” I growled, holding my shield in front of the Megazord when Koragg fired his weapon at it. Before I could bring the shield back in front of me, Koragg fired off three consecutive blasts straight at me, which struck me in my chest, sending me tumbling to the ground. He then blasted the Titan Megazord down beside me, though it still remained together.
“ Foolish Phantom. You are not even worthy to be called a Knight. You are even weaker than the other five put together,” Koragg sneered.
I tried to use the same attack on him that I’d used on Imperious the other day, but I was too weak and undertrained, and he was able to block the attack. Groaning angrily, I shoved myself to my feet, moving to stand in front of the fallen Titan Megazord.
“I may be weak, but I am loyal. I will - protect my friends - if I have to die trying!” I screamed at him.
“ Allow me to grant your wish, Phantom,” Koragg said, raising his sword and blasting at me, I tensed for the blow to hit me, but a strange sound split the air, and when I opened my eyes I was puzzled to see Koragg’s blast exploding in the air.
“ What - was that?” Xander asked from inside Megazord.
“ Who dares interfere?” Koragg demanded to know, and the same sound split the air. My head was drawn towards the hospital, and behind my giant helmet my mouth dropped open.
There on top of the building stood the one creature I’d thought to never see again.
“ Unitastros?” Chip whispered in awe.
“ Wow!” Vida exclaimed.
Koragg was pissed, I could sense it. “ Leave this place, unicorn, and I will let you live for the time being,” he warned the creature. It neighed at him, rearing up and charging its horn with more energy.
Koragg raised his shield, preparing to fire at the majestic unicorn, but I jumped forward, grabbing his shield to keep him from using his most common attack against what I now considered a friend.
“ Leave her alone!” I shouted at him, smashing my shield against his wrist. He retaliated by slashing my chest, sending me stumbling backwards.
He fired the blast anyway, and I screamed as the blast seemed to impact with the unicorn. When the smoke from the blast cleared, Unitastros was nowhere to be seen. Koragg let out an evil laugh, which really pissed me off.
I was about to try the lightning attack again when I raised my shield - and found Unitastros standing on my hand. She neighed something at me, stomping her foot against my suit armor. When I turned my helmeted head towards Koragg, I was grinning, though he couldn’t see it.
“ Koragg, you’ve been the big dog around the Underworld for awhile, and I think it’s time we Rangers sent you running with your tail tucked between your legs,” I said as I tossed Unitastros straight up in the air. She disappeared, which made Koragg take a bold step forward.
“ She could have helped you, Phantom. Now you will die by my sword,” he told me, stopping his sword in mid-swing and bringing it back to his body when I shook my head and raised one finger up.
“ Just hold that thought for a minute there,” I told him, thrusting my outstretched hand towards a spot that was a good five hundred yards away, in the forest. “ Unday Vegor Unitastros!” I shouted out. Seemingly in the middle of the forest, a black mystic circle appeared, and up from it came Unitastros, in her zord form. The horned equine reared up on her hind legs and neighed before she charged through the air straight towards me.
“ Impossible!” Koragg angrily shouted, taking a few steps backward.

I was grinning like a Cheshire cat as I leapt through the air. “ Centaur Uniforce Cecrestras!” I called out. Unitastros’ body changed and grew even more. Her head slid down into her body, and my legs slid into her front legs. An explosion of light fused our bodies together, and when the brightness cleared, I struck a new fighting pose.
“ Phantom Centaur!” I exclaimed, calling out the title of my current form.
“ All right!” Madison exclaimed.
“ Got get ’im, Phantom Knight!” Vida shouted.
“ I do not know how you were able to unlock Unitastros’ zord form and summon her to fight with you, but I will make sure you both regret it in the future,” Koragg promised as he turned away.
As one of his dark mystic circles appeared a few feet in front of him, I held my hand forward. “ Ulilayo!” I called out, causing lightning to strike the back end of the Centaur.
It reared up in fright, instantly separating into Koragg and Catastros, before both warrior and zord tumbled through the seal. The seal closed immediately behind them, blocking any remark the evil warrior might have made.
Happy cheers and whistling erupted from the Titan Megazord, and I quickly powered down to my regular morphed size, after first separating from Unitastros. My teammates followed my lead, and soon we were all standing on a sidewalk beside a street that had a bit of damage to the buildings on it.
“ That was amazing!” Xander cheered.
“ Hitting Koragg like that was cool,” was Chip’s comment.
A gentle nudge from behind made me turn around, only to find Unitastros standing there. She neighed at me, and I smiled under my helmet as I patted her head.
“ Thanks girl. I’m glad you showed up,” I told her. She nodded her head, stepping backward and disappearing through the same type of mystic circle through which she’d appeared. When she left, I turned back to my teammates.
“ We need to go check on Daggeron. He was injured rather seriously again,” I told them.
“ I am fine, Phantom Knight,” Daggeron said as he came around the corner - again fully morphed.
“ What? How?” I asked in disbelief.
“ Unitastros healed me,” he said as he came to stand in front of me.
“ Rangers, come back to Rootcore,” Udonna told us via our suits’ Comm-Link’s. Madison and the others summoned their Mystic Racers and mounted them, flying up into the sky. Daggeron’s carpet came flying around the corner, and he helped me up onto it before the carpet took off. When we got back to the Magical Forest, instead of heading towards Rootcore, we headed away from it.
“ Where are we going?” I asked Daggeron. He didn’t give me a reply, so I was forced to just sit there as the carpet wove its way through the air. When it started to descend into a small clearing,
I was puzzled, even more so when I saw the house standing at the edge of the clearing. Vines had grown up over the walls and roof, and the grass had grown almost waist deep due to there not being any tree growing in the clearing. Daggeron helped me down from the carpet, then led me towards the house.
I stopped several times before I got there, picking up a partially-rotted basket, a palm-sized box of dried flowers, and half-broken vase. When we entered the little cottage-like house, I curiously looked around, finding several discarded things that only told me this place had been abandoned for many years.
“ I brought you to this place for a reason,” Daggeron told me as I set the things I’d picked up onto the wobbly wooden table.
“ Why’s that?” I asked him.
I jumped a bit when he placed a gloved hand on my shoulder. “ Almost twenty years ago, this is where your birth mother lived. This house used to be Niella’s,” Daggeron softly said, and I slumped against the wall in disbelief.
“ No. It can’t be. You just brought me here for some kind of training session. This cannot be my mother’s house,” I protested, the denial sounding false even to my own ears.
“ It is her house, Diora. Knowing what we do now, she probably always intended to pass the house and her powers onto you. When she died, and the Great Battle ended, Udonna created Rootcore, and this place fell out of shape,” Daggeron told me.
In an instant, I was back in my regular clothes, tears misting my eyes.
Daggeron demorphed as well, and when he embraced me I practically melted as tears began pouring down my cheeks. “ My m-mother died pr-protecting the world. She thought I was dead, and the entire t-time she’s thinking that, I’m in the surface world, not having a s-single care,” I stuttered as my tears soaked into Daggeron’s shirt.
“ You were only one or two when she died, Diora. You cannot blame yourself for what happened. Niella would not want that,” Daggeron whispered to me.
I kept crying for several more minutes, until I was able to bring my tears under control. With red-shot eyes, I looked up at Daggeron. “ Thank you, for bringing me here. I’d like to fix the place up, make it a memorial to my birth mother. Do you think Udonna would let me?” I asked him, and he gave me a small smile.
“ As Niella’s oldest daughter, you inherited this place the day she died. I’m sure she will let you do as you wish with it,” he told me, and I let out a short gasp.
“ Oh, snap! I forgot, I had to morph in front of my adopted parents! They’re probably thinking something terrible happened to me!” I exclaimed, bolting out the door, Daggeron right on my heels. He stopped me from getting onto the carpet, and instead teleported us straight back to the hospital. We landed right in my parents room - luckily they were alone and the door was shut.
When Mom saw my body appear in a sparkling of black lights, she very nearly fainted, instead moving back and sitting down quickly on the bed. “ Mother, I’m sorry. This just happened for the first time about four days ago,” I told her as I moved forward to sit beside her.
“ How - what - you grew,” she stammered, and I nodded.
“ How is a long story, and as for the what part, I think my friend Daggeron, and my birth aunt should explain things to you,” I told her. The part about my birth aunt shocked her and my father.
“ You know some of your birth relatives? When did this happen?” Mother wanted to know.
“ Yes. It happened not long after I became a Knight for the first time. I found out I have a very powerful aunt, plus a half-sister. I know you’d like them,” I added at the still-confused look on her face.
“ But how did you grow so big. You combined with what looked like a unicorn, and then you just - just beamed in here,” Dad said, and I had to give him a smile at his choice of words.
“ I teleported. And if I’m to explain how everything happened, I have to take you to a place where no one from the s - from outside our little group can hear what I tell you,” I told him. Since someone had provided my parents some clothes, I turned my back while my parents got dressed. When they were finished, Mom, gently touched my shoulder.
“ If you don’t want anyone to know what you say, then how can we get out of here without anyone knowing?” she wanted to know.
“ While you were dressing, Daggeron pulled a few strings and got you discharged. And as for leaving, we’ll go the same way Daggeron and I came,” I told her, grabbing her and Dad’s hands before they had a chance to protest. My body dissolved into black light, Daggeron’s into gold-yellow, and my parents’ into a snowy-white color, and our light-bodies rushed through the air.
When we finally landed, we were inside Rootcore. Mom and Dad wobbled a bit, but soon regained their composure. They looked around them, puzzled and startled to find themselves in a different room. “ Where in the world are we?” Mom asked me.
“ You’re in Rootcore, a place my birth-aunt created after the Great Battle,” I told her, taking a step back when she whirled to face me.
“ You don’t mean the Great Battle between good and evil,” she said, and my eyebrow shot skyward as I nodded.
“ Yeah. How did you know what I meant?” I wanted to know.
“ Meagan? Alan?” Udonna said in disbelief as she entered the room, followed closely by Clare and the rest of my teammates.
“ Udonna?” Mom asked.
“ What?” was my question.
“ I haven’t seen you since the Great Battle. When you left for the surface world, I thought I’d never see you again,” Udonna said as she moved forward to hug my parents.
“ O-kay, what’s going on here? How could you possibly know them?” I asked Udonna.

“ Alan was once known as Aliador, and Meagan was once known as Miara,” Udonna said as she led my parents over to the stools around the crystal ball, where she and they sat down.
“ What? Whoa, wait just a minute. You’re telling me that my adopted parents are actually from here, and you knew them way back when? Just how well did you know them?” I wanted to know.
“ Miara was my best friend, and Aliador was my brother,” Udonna said. At that, my legs could no longer support me, and I collapsed into Daggeron’s arms. He picked me up, carrying me over to the stool beside Udonna.
“ You’ve got to be kidding me. You mean to tell me that the entire time I’m growing up, I’m being raised by my birth-uncle and my birth-aunt’s best friend? This is way too much to absorb,” I muttered.
“ Had I known you were Udonna’s niece, Blaze, I would have come back to the Magical Forest much sooner,” Father told me.
“ There’s another secret we’ve been keeping from you, Blaze,” Mother suddenly said, and my gaze turned immediately to him.
“ What else could you possibly be hiding from me?” I asked.
“ I’m not only Udonna’s best friend, but I’m also not completely human,” she said, crossing her right fist over her chest. Bright light surrounded her, and when the light disappeared she was no longer human-looking. She looked like some sort of robot or suited warrior. Her body seemed to be made of some sort of white metal, and was covered in silver, gold, and red armor.
Now even Daggeron was surprised. “ I thought I’d never see you again,” he whispered.
“ O-kay, I’m flabbergasted now. How does Daggeron seem to know my adopted mother?” I spoke up.
“ Miara was my sister-in-arms during the Great Battle. She was in a separate part of the forest during the Great Battle, in her own battle with almost a hundred Hidiacs and Styxoids,” Daggeron said as my adopted mother returned to her human form.
“ I think we’ll give you guys some time alone,” Nick said as he started to usher the other four from the room. He stopped in his tracks when Clare, who’d been keeping a sharp eye on the Crystal Ball, spoke up.
“ There’s a dark energy reading in the forest,” she told us, causing everyone to turn to face the Crystal Ball.
“ Rangers, go,” Udonna told my teammates.
They quickly morphed and grabbed their brooms, disappearing through their places on the far wall. “ Um, not to sound stupid or anything, but since I found out you knew - know - my adopted parents, what are we going to do about our little situation?” I curiously asked.
“ You are more than welcome to make your home here in Rootcore. I do believe Diora already likes it here,” Udonna told my adopted parents.
“ We’d be happy to. It will be good to use my magic again. After the Great Battle, leaving for the surface world blocked our powers,” Mother said.
Udonna returned to watching the Crystal Ball, so I got up and moved away from the others. “ Finding this out was just as shocking for me as for you,” Daggeron said as he came up beside me.
“ I doubt it,” I mumbled.
“ Daggeron, Diora, the Rangers need your help. Koragg and several Styxoids have shown up,” Udonna told us.
Immediately, Daggeron and I removed our morphers. “ Magical Source, Mystic Force!” he called out, morphing into the Solaris Knight.
“ Phanto Mysto, Magical Raijio!” I called out, morphing into the Phantom Knight. I gave my adopted parents quick hugs before following Daggeron outside. His carpet appeared, and we hopped on, standing side by side as the carpet took off.
When we got to the scene of the fight, Koragg was fighting Nick, a freaky-looking monster was fighting Xander and Chip, and twelve Styxoids were fighting Vida and Madison.” Hey, pick on someone your own size, ya freak!” I shouted, leaping from the carpet and landing against the monster’s chest, which sent him flying backwards into two Styxoids, demolishing them but not even harming him.
“ Thank you for falling into my trap, Phantom Knight,” an evil voice said, and I didn’t have time to turn around before a huge blast of wind knocked me sideways, straight into and through the trunk of a tree. When I got to my feet, I was thoroughly pissed to find Imperious standing before me. With a snap of his fingers, he reverted to his human form, something Udonna had not told me about.
“ My daughter, give up this meaningless life. Come and fight with me,” Calindor told me, and I took a step backwards.
“ You - are not - my father any longer!” I hissed at him as my shield appeared, and I defiantly glared at him from under my helmet.
He gave me an evil smile, holding his hand up as black tendrils of mist began to coalesce around it. “ Then you won’t mind if I take back my Ring,” he calmly said, throwing his hand forward and lobbing the ball of black energy at me. It exploded against my shield, sending me flying once more.
This time, I landed at the feet of the monster fighting the guys, and with what sounded like glee the monster stomped on my chest, sending sparks flying from my suit as pain arced along my nerves.
“ Pathetic, Phantom,” Calindor sneered as he advanced towards me.
With a curse that I knew I’d be reprimanded for later, I threw the monster away from me, flipping back to my feet using a move I’d seen Daggeron use.
“ I’m tired of being called pathetic by someone who looks as old as the pyramids. Unbatha!” I angrily screamed, causing a terrific tornado to appear in the air before me. Calindor promptly disappeared as the tornado swept everything evil off its feet before it disappeared as well. The Styxoids ended up getting destroyed, but Koragg and the monster were quickly back on their feet.
“ You are learning, Phantom Knight, but you cannot ultimately beat my power,” he told me as he called out for Catastros. I did the same for Unitastros, and after another bit of spell-casting, we alone faced each other, giants towering above the trees, two centaurs as different as night is from day on the inside, yet nearly identical on the outside.
“ You wounded me last time, Phantom Knight, but I have the upper hand. Osay Mijor Ultimas!” he called out, separating immediately from Catastros. I stood there, stunned, as Catastros’ body shifted, forming some sort of a pair of arms, a lower torso, and legs. Koragg slid into the torso part, and a bright flash of light fused them together.
“ Centaurus Wolf Megazord!” he announced, calling out the title of his new combination.
“ Did somebody call me?” Daggeron asked as he appeared beside me in the Solar Streak Megazord. The monster grew to Koragg’s Megazord size, prompting my other teammates to form the Titan Megazord. This is going to be one long, dangerous battle, I thought to myself. As usual about these things, I was right.
The fight lasted nearly thirty minutes, during which I, Daggeron, and our teammates got the stuffing kicked out of us. Daggeron’s Megazord was the only one of us that was still standing now. I had gotten beaten down by Koragg nearly twenty minutes ago, with the Titan Megazord following suit soon after.
“ At last, an end to the Solaris Knight,” Koragg said in a rather calm voice. I looked up from where I was laying, having gone down to normal size after falling to the ground; Unitastros had left to heal herself.
“ Louther,” I managed to rasp, holding my hand out towards where the giant monster was advancing towards the Solar Streak Megazord. A dark mystic circle appeared under the creature, dragging it back to the depths of the Underworld.
Koragg shouted in anger before quickly following the creature via a circle of his own. My body totally exhausted, my arm flopped back to the ground, and I lay there unmoving, my strength having already ebbed from me.
“ Blaze, where are you?” Madison shouted as she and the others began looking for me.
“ Blaze! Are you okay?” Chip called out.
I was barely able to move my eyes upward as a shadow fell over me.
Daggeron quickly picked me, holding me against his chest as the other Rangers ran over to us. One look at my pale skin had sent fear coursing through Daggeron; I could still sense things, though I couldn’t move.
“ She’s - dying,” Daggeron whispered. He turned and immediately teleported me to Rootcore. Udonna and my adopted parents ran over to us, their faces paling a bit when they saw my condition. My adopted mother burst into tears, and my adopted father had to comfort her.
“ She did the same thing her mother did. She used too much magic,” Udonna whispered in fear as she checked my pulse and placed a hand to my forehead.
“ I swore to protect Niella and the Mystics. I cannot fail again,” Daggeron said in part anger, part fear, and part sorrow.
“ Isn’t there anything you can do?” my adopted mother sobbed, her tearful gaze moving to Udonna as my uncle - my adopted father - sat her down on a stool.

“ I’m sorry,” Udonna whispered, causing my mother - Miara, I reminded myself - to collapse against Aliador’s body, her sobs racking her whole body.
At that moment, the other five unmorphed Rangers came hurrying in. “ Udonna?” Madison fearfully whispered when she saw the looks on all the adults’ faces. Udonna sadly bowed her head, and tears began misting Madison’s eyes.
My ability to stay awake was fading, so I made one last statement to my teammates and family, though it was mental - telepathic.
If I go now, my friends, I go in peace. At least I helped out some. For that - opportunity - I am glad. Take care of one another, and be good to your teachers - and Aliador and Miara, I told everyone, my eyes fluttering closed as the dark void of unconsciousness came up to claim me.

Everyone in the room had tears in their eyes when the Phantom Knight closed her eyes. “ She is - close to death. We have - to prepare a burial place for her,” Udonna sadly said, forcing back her tears even though losing her niece was like losing her sister all over again. Daggeron gently carried the young Knight into his own bedroom, lying her on the bed before taking a seat by her side.
“ I want to be with her as much as possible until she passes,” he told Udonna, forcing his own tears back so that his students would not see him cry.
After saying their goodbyes to the young Phantom Knight’s dying body, the five misty eyed teen Rangers went back to the main rom, leaving Daggeron alone with the young Phantom Night.
Now that no one was watching, Daggeron allowed his tears to come, not even wiping them away as they slid down his cheeks. One tear hit the Phantom Ring on the young Phantom Knight’s finger. He was too sad to notice the tiny bright light that briefly glowed on the Ring, disappearing in less than two seconds.
“ I will miss you fighting at my side, young friend,” Daggeron whispered as he forced his tears back once more. He leaned down, giving the young Knight a light kiss across the cheek, before he stood straight and walked out of the room.

Seven uneventful days had passed, and despite hoping against hope, the Phantom Knight had not woken up. Her breathing had become fainter over those seven days, until the Rangers were afraid to leave her alone for too long in the fear that she would cease to be while they were gone. Miara had not been able to bring herself to go look at the Knight, for having raised her as her daughter made thinking about the Knight’s death that much more heartbreaking.
Even the cat genie, Jenji, seemed to be moping around Rootcore a lot more than normal. That could have been caused by the feelings he could sense coming from Daggeron. “ She’s dying because she saved me,” he angrily muttered for the umpteenth time in the past seven days.
“ Daggeron, it’s not your fault. You couldn’t have known she was going to do what she did,” Madison told her teacher.
“ Maddie’s right, Daggeron. You shouldn’t blame yourself,” Vida spoke up, laying a hand on Daggeron’s arm. Still angry with himself, Daggeron angrily shook the girl’s arm off.
“ I hope Koragg attacks soon. I’m going to destroy him the first chance I get,” the Solaris Knight growled. This anger was unlike him - everyone that knew him knew it.
Any response anyone would’ve made was stopped when Udonna told them that there was a dark energy reading coming from Briarwood. With an angry look on his face, Daggeron led the others in morphing. He ran outside to his carpet, zooming off so quickly that the other five Rangers on their Mystic Racers almost didn’t catch up with him.
Clare came up to Udonna, her own eyes a little red-rimmed from crying. “ Her breathing has almost stopped,” the young woman whispered into her aunt’s ear. The powerful witch nodded, keeping her composure even though she was feeling terrible inside. Together, the witch, her best friend, her brother, and her niece watched the battle between good and evil via the Crystal Ball.
It was apparent the Rangers had all lost a little heart during the past week.
The evidence was in their fighting, and the fact that they barely managed to destroy the group of Styxoids confronting them. Koragg suddenly appeared on the scene, already in his Megazord form.
“ The death of a Knight in battle is honorable. Stealing your powers will be easier with the Phantom Knight gone,” Koragg told the Rangers as they formed the Titan and the Solar Streak Megazords.
“ You heartless creep!” Madison shouted.
“ You will pay dearly for what happened to the Phantom Knight!” Chip angrily screamed.
His words came back to bite him in the ass when Koragg fired such a blow at the Titan Megazord that it immediately separated the Titans and forced them down to their Ranger forms, weakening them so much that they had not the power nor the willpower to reform the Megazord. Inside the Solar Streak Megazord’s cockpit, Daggeron was fuming. He launched punch after punch, blast after blast, at the enemy Megazord. Few of the hits connected, and none had any effect.
“ You will join your friend,” Koragg said, blasting the Megazord to the ground and forcing Daggeron to eject from the cockpit. Koragg met the Solaris Knight on the ground, and the two began trading blows.
Finally, the dark Knight gained the upper hand, smashing his shield against Daggeron’s chest so hard that the Solaris Knight went flying backward into a large boulder, his suit sparking badly. A cut on his shoulder oozed a trickle of blood inside his suit, and Daggeron stared defiantly at Koragg as he slowly approached, his sword raised.
“ Goodbye, Solaris Knight,” Koragg said as his sword charged with dark energy.

“ Nooooooo!” I screamed as I sat bolt upright in bed, my fists clenched against the covers. My mother’s words last words echoed through my head:
You must find your inner power. What magic cannot defeat, love will always overcome. Even as I was thinking these things, my body disappeared, forming into a ball of white light, which quickly left Rootcore. I arrived at the fight scene just as Koragg’s energy-charged sword was swinging down towards Daggeron’s chest.
Remembering my mother’s words a second time, I zoomed right in front of Daggeron, unfurling my still-light-covered body. The blade bounced off of my body, sending Koragg stumbling backwards even as my weakened, unmorphed, teen teammates stumbled into view.
“ What kind of magic is this?!” Koragg angrily shouted, trying twice more to slice through me, though his sword bounced away harmlessly. When he began to try a fourth time, I simply threw my hands forward, sending him skidding back several yards and causing him to drop his sword.
“ What is that?” Vida asked as she le
