what causes chrome wear on toys(and lead to those ugly black things under the chrome)? abrasions? chemical reactions? what can be done to prevent these?

air naturally has its effects on chrome,it is irreservasble as it is a air compressed vacuform chrome, and not a pure element.
Take it from a guy who collects the worst chromed line ever,Silverhawks.
The best you can do is Dont leave it in sunlight. Dont clean it. And if your storeing it....wrap it in Tissues. Yes Tissues. If your put plastic directly on chrome it will be nasty if elements get to it.

If you want to fix it you might try some METALIC spray paint. I don't know if it'll work but you can find it at wal-mart. There are a couple differnt ones in the regular spray paint then there are some in the auto section. The quality varies I hear. Just do some research on the best brand. I would'nt do it if you wheren't sure that it'll work or you care alot about it! You can protect the rest of it from getting painted by useing masking tape. Anywayz Its just a sujestion.

chrome and metallic paint are totally different. metallic paint is metallic but it isnt anywhere as shiny and mirror-like like chrome. chrome isnt even paint, its actually a layer of aluminum that bonds to plastic thru the use of a vaccum and after that a protective coat is put on top of that. this is the reason why it flakes when chipped.
