Just thought up the idea of this today. It takes place before Samurai, after Wired.

SPD: Episode 1X: Malfunction
By Nitros, and all his other names

[SPD Base]

Kat and Boom were rushing down the hallway. Both had a look of worry on their faces, but Kat's had more angry tone to it, and she was walking a little faster. Kat was worried about the data that was on the clipboard she was holding, while Boom was worried about the fact that he was responsible for the data Kat was holding.

"Explain to me again," Kat gritted through her teeth as they passed a trio of C-Squad cadets, "how you 'accidently' caused a malfunction to two-thirds of the electronics in the base?"

"Well," Boom started nervously, "I was working with the circuit boards, y'know, to do the bi-weekly maintenance, y'know, like we always have to do, like every two weeks, which is my job, and-"

"BOOM!" stammered Kat, which startled a janitor who was just passed by.

"Y-yeah! Well, I was drinking my coffee, and it was really hot," continued Boom, more nervous than before, "and then RIC showed up, and he kind of snuck up on me, and-" Boom cut himself off; they had just reached the Command Center.

"Commander Cruger," called Kat, as they walked through the opening doors, "we have a slight," she paused to glare at the careless man next to her, "problem. it appears that Boom here has made a slight...error in the mainfr-" Kat was cut off by a loud alarm and bright red lights.

"It'll have to wait until later," interrupted Cruger, "there's a giant robot attack downtown. Send the rangers!" Kat sighed.

"Boom, take care of what you can." She handed him her clipboard, which was stuffed with five pages of statements. She focused her attention back to her other job. "Attention, there is a giant robot attack downtown." She said over the intercom.

Back in the rec room, the rangers had just stopped a game of LightBall. (it stopped because the LightBall...exploded...somehow...)"Ready!" called Jack.

"Ready!" called back everyone.

You know what happens here.

The rangers ran down the hall to the Command Center, and jumped through the waiting zord bay tubes. "Morphers locked!" said Jack as each of the rangers put their SPD morphers in ignition mode. The Delta Runners drove out of the base and rushed downtown, to where Gruumm's latest monster, Brutor, was controlling an unusually large robot. The rangers formed the megazord, and in seconds were firing lasers at Brutor's mech.

But, all of the lasers were deflected. Not only that, they bounced back. The rangers were hit with five red hot beams of energy, which were their own. "That.....didn't work." said Bridge over the com-link after the sparks in his cockpit settled down.

"Let's try the sword." suggested Z. The megazord reached down from the Green Delta Runner for the sword. Only problem, the compartment that held the sword didn't open. T'was jammed.

"Uh... Bridge, could you press that big red button on your control board?" grumbled Sky.

"....Trying...." And trying Bridge was. After about twenty presses, he mumbled, "Kat... it's not working..."

Kat, who was watching the battle, said, "Yeah, about that. You may notice some of the devices might malfu-" she was interrupted by the rangers panicking after a blow from Brutor had connected, "....malfunction."

"Let's try the gun again." said Jack.

"Let's NOT try the gun again." answered Kat. "Let's try getting back to the base and form the Delta Command Megazord."

"I like that idea." said Syd.

"Me too." said Z.

"I'll go with that." said Bridge.

"Good idea Kat." said Sky.

Jack said nothing.

The rangers retreated back to the base. The Runners abruptly stopped.

"....open the doors Kat..." said the rangers unanimously.

"I can't. They don't work." answered Kat.

"The doors... don't work..." repeated Jack.

"....Yeah."

"But we got out because the doors opened."

"That's right."

"But now that we're coming in, they suddenly don't work."

"Pretty much."

"...why?"

"The was a slight malfunction."

"Look," interrupted Syd, "this is a REALLY interesting conversation, but that monster is destroying the city. Kat, is there any other way to get to the Delta Command Cockpit?"

"....you could walk..."

"No. Way." said Sky.

So, after the rangers abandoned their zords, ran through the front doors, up the fifty flights of stairs, down thirty-five halls, and stopped for a bathroom break, they made it to the cockpit. Cruger was there, morphed, half-asleep.

"What's the rush?" mumbled Cruger. The rangers all glared at him. Well, they were under helmets, but there was no doubt from the ranger sitting in the front control seat that there was a bad vibe aimed at him. "....Delta Command Megazord!"

The base didn't respond. But the zord bay doors did open.

"KAT!" yelled all of the rangers.

There was no answer, but the base slowly, VERY slowly, lowered its second half to go into crawler-mode.

"Okay then," said Jack, aggrivated, "...Delta Command Crawler....Fire lasers!" And as he half-expected, nothing happened.

"The lasers don't work anymore." said Kat, "but I got the megazord formation working."

"Initiate Megazord formation sequence!" commanded Cruger. The base began to rise, then stopped at the upright, standing position. "Finger lasers!"

"Those don't work either." said Kat over the speaker.

"KAT!" yelled Cruger, "WHY DON'T MY FINGER LASERS WORK?!"

"...the megazord formation skipped the step of connecting the hards to the arms."

"...how can a sequence programmed by you 'forget' to give a megazord hands?" stammered Z. Kat brought up a diagram on one of the main screens. It showed a side view of the base (or, more accurately, a toy of the megazord) changing correctly. Indeed, the diagram showed how the hands were connected; something that DBDS had forgotten this time. All of the rangers were silent.

"Let's fire the full-power blast." suggested one of them. The rest of them immediately answered.

"Great idea."

"What a concept."

"Let's do it."

"Perfect."

"Why not?"

"Okay."

"Not working."

"What?"

"Not working."

"..."

"..."

"..."

"..."

"..."

"KAT!"

"I got the hands connected."

Jack inhaled deeply. VERY deeply. The rest of them exhaled with him.

Meanwhile on Gruumm's ship...

"What are they doing?" asked Morgana.

"....I have no idea." replied Gruumm.

"Brutor, have you destroyed the city yet?" asked Morgana over a communicator.

Brutor responded, "You mean I'm supposed to do something while they talk?"

Back at the DCM cockpit...

"Kat, did you just say that we can't fire the finger lasers, now that the megazord has HANDS?" grumbled Cruger, exasperated. It was apparent that Syd was getting bored, Bridge was daydreaming, and Sky was trying to check something else on his terminal, though he and everyone else knew he had no idea WHAT he was doing.

"The device that concentrates the energy to fire the lasers is malfunctioning. All we have is missiles." explained Kat.

"Those never work." said Cruger.

"But we've never tried them." answered Kat. Cruger, infuriated, got up and left out the back door to the Command Center. He walked over to Kat and gripped her shoulder.

"Kat." he said stern, yet trying to control his rage. "I have tried to be patient. But if you do not get lasers firing out of those fingers in the next minute, I may have the temptation to choke you. Do I make myself-"

"Look," gasped Kat as she pointed to the monitor in front of her. On the screen showed the other five rangers on the roof with their blasters out.

"Fire!" yelled Jack. The Delta Blaster and four Deltamax Strikers focused their most powered up shots on one point on the robot straight ahead of them. And it should have been successful to deactivate the robot based on where the lasers were pointed.

But it wasn't. The lasers bounced back, just like the ones the DSM fired. The reflected shots hit five points on the DCM, all of which were critical joints. Instantly all of the electricity in the base shut down from the surge. Over the intercom you could hear Cruger's raging breaths.

"Kat," said Z, "would you be so kind as to reboot the mainframe?" An expected pause was present.

"Rebooting." replied Kat. The lights went on, gadgets started moving, and the base was back online. With the reboot, all of the previous orders that had been given to the base processed all at once. Therefore, a Light Ball had appeared in the rec room and recorded that Sky had just lost a point. The hatch on the Green Delta Runner that kept the DSM sword opened and closed twenty times. The zord bay doors were switching like mad. The lasers for the Delta Command Crawler, now on the knees of the megazord, fired ten times their normal power. Thousands of finger lasers fired, along with the main full-power blast of the DCM.

Brutor's robot was disintegrated instantly. Along with Brutor.

"Thank you Kat." said Z calmly over the intercom. The connections for the five rangers cut off. Cruger and Kat stood where they were, speechless.

"Kat." said Cruger finally."I want you to 'forget' to record this day in SPD archives."

"Understood." said Kat. The two silently left the Command Center in disbelief. Or, they tried to. The main doors wouldn't work.

Meanwhile... far, far, away... Boom was running for his life. With RIC, and a giant coffee stain on his shirt.
