Yeah, I know there are loads of SPD fics around right now, but I have had this planned since Endings, so here goes. Obviously in continuity, set after Endings 2.

SPD Envy

Chapter 1

The heavy wind whipped past the Red SPD Ranger as he charged across the rooftop of the building, his legs pushing onwards, despite the developing ache in them. Looking downwards, to his left, the Ranger could see the tops of smaller buildings, each covered with high tech equipment such as satellite dishes and antenna. A few buildings away, he could see one of his fellow rangers rushing across a lower rooftop. Suddenly, the Blue Ranger stopped, coming to the edge of the building, before looking up to his leader and shrugging his shoulders and pointing to the next building. It was taller than the one the Blue Ranger was currently standing on, and a large distance away.

“Bridge,” Sky said in to his Delta Morpher, breathing heavily as he continued running, “Think you can make that jump?”
“Don’t think so Sky.” Bridge replied. “I could try it, but if I’d rather not try it and not risk what would happen if I did try it and couldn’t make it.”
“Right.” Sky nodded, ignoring Bridge’s unnecessary babbling, as he reached the edge of the building. “I think I can do it from up here. Tell the girls to seal off the bottom of the building.”
“Roger.” Bridge said, as Sky closed his Delta Morpher and placed it back in to it’s storage space at the back of his belt.

Looking through his visor, the Red Ranger could see that the distance to the next building was rather large, and there would have been no way Bridge could have made the jump, he wouldn’t have been able to get enough altitude, as well as the length. However, from this height, it was doable. On the building to his left, Sky could see Bridge entering the stairwell, back to the ground floor. It still seemed strange to be watching the Blue Ranger like this, it was almost like watching himself, and sometimes he had to remind himself that being the Red Ranger was not just a dream anymore.

Sky turned his attention back to the building infront of him, running again to gain the needed speed for the jump.

**

“Are we sure he is still inside?” Syd asked the Yellow Ranger as they both stood, in their S.W.A.T gear, in the large lobby of the hotel. It was very elegant, with large marble pillars scattered around the room. It reminded Syd of some of the places her parents would take her, though usually she would not be in Ranger uniform, equipped with a Delta Enforcer. The gun was held tightly to her chest, partly covering the ‘5’ that decorated her vest. Whilst Sky and Bridge had been more than happy to change colours after Jack’s departure, both Z and Syd had decided that they would rather stay with yellow and pink. The team had agreed that their rankings did not hold much weight within the team anyway, so moving from Ranger number 4 to 3, or 5 to 4 would not have made a difference.

“I think so.” Z nodded from across the room, her body pressed against one of the large pillars. “We have had no further word from Sky or Bridge.”

“Hold your position!” Bridge yelled as he burst through the double doors, grabbing for his Delta Morpher. “S.W.A.T Mode!” The armour attached itself to the Blue Ranger suit as Bridge continued to run towards the main stairs. “Stay here, keep the lobby covered.” He shouted. “Sky wants me to search upstairs.”

“Right.” The two girls said in unison, as the Blue Ranger ran up the stairs, leaving them alone again. The lobby had been evacuated moments after the Pink and Yellow Rangers had appeared on the scene.

**

“Sky!” Bridge shouted, as he saw the Red Ranger, now also in S.W.A.T mode, at the other end of the red carpeted corridor. “Did you make the jump then?” When he got no reply, the Blue Ranger continued talking. “Are you getting a reading?”
“Not yet.” Sky said quietly. “He has to be in here somewhere though.”

Bridge turned slowly, attempting to scan the area. He knew Sky was right, the criminal they were chasing had jumped on to this building, with some kind of agility enhancing device, and had descended down the stair well. Syd and Z had not reported anything at the front door, so he must have been still in the building. His train of thought was soon interrupted, however, as Sky yelled in to his helmet’s communication device.

“Syd, Z, get outside, now!” His motivation was soon revealed, as there was the sound of smashing glass from the far end of the corridor. Turning towards the origin of the sound, Bridge could see into the end room, as the criminal, a tall and slim figure, with a long neck and pointed head, vanished through the window.

**

“We need to get after him!” Z yelled, as she and Syd watched helplessly as their prey jumped impossibly high, speeding through the city. “Kat, we need the Flyers!”

“Negative.” Came the voice of Commander Cruger through the com systems. “B Squad are to report to Delta Base immediately.”

“What?” Syd said, shrugging her shoulders and turning to Z. “Why?”

“It doesn’t matter why.” Sky replied, as he and Bridge came through the double doors. “Let’s get back.”

**

“And how did you loose him Officer Tate?” Commander Cruger demanded, standing close to him, looking down at the young man. “Were your squad not spread out appropriately?”

“Sir,” Sky started, standing tall trying to not show the nerves in his voice. “I felt it appropriate for Syd and Z to cover the largest room, while myself and Bridge searched the upper levels. I failed to anticipate the target escaping by any other means.”

Z and Syd subtly looked to each other. This was a technique Sky had evidently learnt from Jack, the ability to explain exactly what happen, disguising his own faults.

“Thank you Sky.” The Commander nodded, stepping back. “B-Squad, you are dismissed.”

“Yes sir!” The four Rangers said in unison, saluting their canine boss in the traditional SPD manner of moving their elbow across their chest. As they left the Command Center, Doggy moved to his chair, sighing deeply as he sat down.

“It wasn’t their fault Doggie.” Kat Manx, the head SPD Earth technician, and Doggie Cruger’s old friend, said, as she steped away from the computer that she had been working on. “They weren’t to know. The four of them can’t be in five places at once.”

“That’s the problem Kat.” Cruger nodded. “There’s four of them. I think it is time to appoint a new Ranger to the B Squad.”

Chapter 2. Just to note, this story as a whole will be quite short.

“It wasn’t your fault Sky.” Syd said softly, placing a hand on the Red Ranger’s shoulder as she stood behind the sofa in the recreation room. “If anything me and Z should have been keeping an eye outside aswell as in the lobby.”
“Maybe.” Sky replied, looking down at his lap, before unzipping his grey regulation jacket. The shirt underneath was red, unlike the usual blue he had been used too. It represented his designation, and status as leader, a status he wasn’t sure he deserved right now.
“Syd’s right.” Z commented as she entered the room and sat down opposite the two rangers, laughing slightly to herself as Syd took her hand quickly from Sky’s shoulder. “No one could have known what he was going to do, and we might have still caught him if we had used the Flyers, and not using them wasn’t you fault.”

“I could have known.” Bridge added, coming in from the other doorway. “But I wasn’t concentrating hard enough. It’s hard enough using my powers normally, let alone when I’m in Ranger form concentrating on stuff like the battle and what’s going on, and what I had for breakfast.”

“That’s better!” Syd beamed, jumping over the back of the sofa and landing next to Sky when she saw the small smirk on his face, caused by Bridge’s small speech. “And remember, we are still adjusting to only having four of us. Of course things are going to be a little different to start with.” She brushed some blonde hair from her face, before leaning back on the sofa.

“Maybe that’s part of the problem.” Sky said solemnly, any hint of joy removed from his face. “It’s different without Jack around, he was a good leader.” He stretched his arms, taking the jacket off, and throwing it on to the seat beside him.
“Of course it’s different.” Bridge said, leaning forward, his gloved hands in the air. “I mean, it can’t be the same, because he isn’t here, but it’s almost the same, even if it isn’t.”
“I think what Bridge means,” Z smiled, “Is that you are doing just a good of a job as Jack did. It’s just the fact that we only have four of us now, that’s all.”
“Yeah, that was it.” Bridge said, “Plus, with you in red, I get to be blue, and I like blue, almost as much as I like green. And yellow.” Sky laughed slightly as Syd raised her eyebrows to the Blue Ranger. “I like Pink too!” Bridge quickly added, jumping to his own defence.

Sky knew they were right. If the team said he was a good leader, he knew they meant it. At the start of Jack’s stint they had all been placed on the spot, and no one kept their feelings hidden regarding his actions. He had to admit however, Jack had certainly developed as a leader, proving his worth various times. The whole team had gelled and grown, and that showed in the team’s current state. Sky was glad he had Bridge as his Blue Ranger, although his banter could become annoying at times, Bridge was a good friend, and a fun person to be around, which was something Sky often felt he needed. He also admired the fact that he didn’t care what rank he was in the team, and had merely accepted the position of Blue Ranger because he liked the colour.

The same could be said for the other two Rangers, he knew that, and also knew that no matter what number was on Z or Syd’s suits, they both had potential to be leaders, to be Red Rangers. At one time he would have thought this impossible, and it was the voicing of this opinion that kept him from being given the Red Ranger powers the first time around. However, after spending so much time with them, and with the revelation that the much admired, in the past anyway, Red A Squad Ranger was a female, his mind had changed.

**

“C Squad Cadets!” Cruger said to the assembled line of five teenagers infront of him. “Welcome to the Command Center.” The commander very rarely allowed anyone other than active Rangers, Kat, Boom and higher level technicians in to the main control room, but felt that this time it was necessary.
“As you know, the B Squad has been operating with only four members for quite some time now, after the departure of Jack Landors.”

The five cadets, two female, three male, nodded silently, before subtly looking to one another. They knew what was coming.

“I feel it is time to change that, and have chosen to select one of you to be the newest member of the B Squad.”

**

The next day…

“I know what Sky meant though.” Bridge said to Syd and Z, who were sitting either side of him. “I mean, us five were meant to be together as a team, we had the genetic powers and everything.”

“Maybe we were only meant to be together to stop Gruumm.” Syd theorised, “Like how Sam only joined us for a little while, until Gruumm was gone.”
“Maybe.” Z added, the mention of the Omega Ranger causing her to think of the young version of Sam who lived in the Delta Base, “As I said when Jack left, once something is over, it’s over. Nothing we can do to change it.”

“Not true!” Bridge exclaimed, jumping to his feet. “Remember how Sam changed his future by coming back in time and helping us? Maybe we could do the same?”

“Wait.” Z said, looking Bridge in the eyes. “You are saying, we should travel back in time and stop Jack from leaving?”
“Even though,” Syd smiled, “We might become balls of light.” Bridge shrugged. “Not to mention you would have to wear green again.” Bridge paused for a moment, looking up thoughtfully.
“On second thoughts, maybe this present isn’t so bad. I prefer Blue anyway.”

Z and Syd laughed in unison as Bridge walked away, before turning to them, as if to say, “What?”

The laughing was cut short, however, as Kat’s voice came over the loudspeaker.
“B Squad to the Command Center!”

**

“What is it Commander?” Sky asked, as the other three ran in to the room and lined up next to him.

“Cadets,” Cruger said slowly, looking at them intensely. “I want you to know that you are one of the best teams of Rangers that it has been my duty to command. You work well as a team, and usually succeed, despite your low number.”

Sky and Bridge looked to each other, unsure of where the commander was heading with this.

“However,” He continued, after a long pause, “I have decided it would be for the best to appoint a new Ranger to your squad.”

Shocked, Syd quickly turned towards the others, but knew better than to speak right now.
“Your new Green Ranger has proven himself in real field work, as well as excelling in all aspects of training. Now,” He said, nodding to Kat, who was sitting at a console at the back of the room, “May I introduce you to the new SPD Green Ranger, Tyler Deon.”

Kat pressed a button, and the doors opposite the Rangers opened, revealing a young man in his late teens, dressed in the familiar SPD uniform with a green trim. His blonde hair was set in to neat spikes atop his head. Tyler nodded with his long face, looking at his new team-mates with respect with his deep blue eyes.

“Hey guys.”

It's really just a short fic to set up B Squad for something I have planned in the future.

Eternal- Don't worry, you certainly will see Tyler causing some trouble in the near future.

Great fic! And everyone's in character.

Interesting. You have one of those styles that are...oh...how do I explain it? "Easy on the eyes", maybe? I dunno. It's easy to keep reading. I like that.

As said before, everyone seems to be in character (While I do think SPD was one of the worst seasons...they still dished out some of the best "personalized" rangers). What do I mean by "personalized"? Well, take the MMPR rangers...as long as they don't sware or have murduring thoughts about each other, you really CAN'T write them out of character. SPD's rangers have all those little quirks and personality traits that make writing Fanfiction so much fun.

Still doesn't mean I like the season though ;)

The problem is indeed an important one...but one always has to ask..."what if there's six exits next time?"

I can't really comment on Tyler yet...as he's just been introduced. However, I hope you don't turn him into a "Mary-Sue" character. Make him well-rounded. Not omnipitant or the "perfect new guy". Or even worse, his sole purpose being a plot device.

Other then that, good start. Keep it up.

Tyler will be far from perfect, I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Awesome,
Amazing,
Incredible,
Unbelievable,
I'm hungry!
Uh, just ignore that last statement. This is great, I love the insight into Sky's mind. The way he felt he wasn't good enough to be red ranger, even after he'd became red ranger, is truly amazing. Keep it up, dude.

seeing from the title envy, i kinda could see Tyler being kind of arrogant and secretly picking off the other rangers one by one untill he confronts sky to be red ranger..iunno...envy?...but w/e...this is way better than my fic(mmpr...again) alot more was explained in the first epp and i understood it...and liked it alot more...i guess i should put more detail into what was going on i nthe first epp and not wait till the second epp to explain...but too late for that...well i gotta give Nemisis props for this fic, it rocks....

Cheers guys. Envy is obviously in tradition of the one word titles, and is a reference to Tyler's colour. Green, Envy, you get the idea. Should have a new chapter up soon.

Nice job, well-written. You especially captured Bridge's speaking style.
My son liked it also. I fact, he got out his SPD action figures and told me that Sky is Red, Bridge is Blue and Tyler is Green!
