EPISODE 1: TO SAVE A FUTURE...

The declaration of war had been the beginning of the end for humanity.
How had he been the only one to see it coming? Even his old friends had been swept away with the thought of making first contact with new races, new civilisations.
New worlds.
For a while, he had been caught up in the hype himself. The Krochakans (Crow - Shak- Ins) had seemed to be a people with similar goals to humans.
To your face they were warm and friendly.
The minute your back was turned, they were nothing more than cold blooded killers.

Long ago, an old friend of his had created the Sonic gemstones after he had analysed the power sources of the Dino Rangers.
When the alliance had been signed between the Space Patrol Delta Rangers and the Krochakans, they had been deemed unneeded and they were scattered across the globe.
But he had hung onto his, and he was glad now he had.

He looked around and saw the debris. Fire fell from the skies. Everything he had fought for was crumbling around him.
No matter how hard he fought, he couldn't stop it.
But he had to fight. He looked down at the glowing device on his wrist. It was different to what he had been used to.
He may have been old, but he had to do something. "Let's go Super Sonic!" he cried and activated the wrist mounted device.

In a flash the figure was gone, replaced by a warrior in a black suit of armour. Different in style, but anyone who knew Earth history knew what he was.
Who he was.
A Black Power Ranger.

In a streak, the Black Ranger raced into Weston City centre.
It was hopeless. Even with all his power, all of his powers, there was nothing he could do.
"So, you finally did it?"
The Black Ranger turned to find one of his followers heading toward him, dodging the ensuing chaos.
Dave Connors had been a student of his back when he had run the dojo in the town. His wife, Donna, and son, Jason, had been killed during the first wave of attacks.

Behind him he could make out the forms of Kevin Cameron and Jacqui Kinsella.
Though the trio were now in their late 30s, they still had the fight within them.
"What about the others?" Black Ranger asked.
"They didn't make it." Jacqui reported, the steel in her voice betraying the emotion in her eyes. "Can we do this already?"
Black Ranger nodded. Four Rangers were better than none.
Connors stepped to the front. "Time to power up..."
"LET'S GO SUPERSONIC!"

The three warriors were transformed in a swirl of energy into the Supersonic Rangers.
"Jet..." Connors cried.
"Bomber..." Jacqui yelled.
"Chopper..." Kevin called.
"SONIC POWER!!"

The four rangers could make out the form of the Krochakan ship coming through the dust overhead.
Jet (Red) Ranger flipped a Krochakan soldier over his shoulder. "There's too many of them. Maybe we should move to plan B."
Bomber Ranger (Yellow) and Chopper Ranger (Blue) agreed and fell back in their leader's retreat.

Black Ranger had hoped that his backup plan wouldn't be needed. But Connors was right.

***
Viceptor had fought long and hard to get where she was today. Ever since she was a child, her father had told her stories of how the humans were weak and gullible.
He had maintained that belief until he met his death at the hands of a human. The Blue SPD Ranger.
She had avenged his death during the final march to Earth.
Looking down she could see that four figures were openly defying the invading forces.

"Admiral!"
She turned to see Kronik, her most trusted lieutenant rush into her ready room. "Yes, Lieutenant, what is it?"
Kronik snapped to attention. "We have detected strange energy readings from Earth, North American Continent."
"What kind of energy?" she asked, already having a good idea of what his answer would be.
"Ranger energy, ma'am. Supposedly the lost power of the sonics."

Immediately she sprang off her seat. If rangers had emerged on her watch, the high command would have her heads. "Prepare a landing party, Kronik. Assemble it on the teleport platform. I'll join you shortly."
"Ma'am?"
She turned back to him. "You have your orders. Dismissed." she barked.

Black Ranger re-grouped his team as they rematerialised. Bomber Ranger was the first to notice their destroyed surroundings. "Where are we?"
In the distance, they could just make out the sights and sounds of their world being destroyed.
"Where it all began." Black Ranger explained, "This is...was the Command Centre and the Power Chamber, headquarters to three ranger teams; morphin, zeo and turbo."
"Why are we here?" Jet Ranger asked.
"To save the world."
"But, shouldn't we be fighting?" Chopper Ranger asked.

Black Ranger turned to him. "We can't do anything for the world now. The only way to stop this is to stop it from happening."
"What?" Bomber Ranger asked.
"Your mission to recover the gemstones was not to fight the Krochakans now, but to deal with them in the past.
"Our sonic powers, your three powers can open up a portal to the past."

The three rangers channelled all of their energies into one and sent the ball of power hurtling into the air. The portal opened before them.

The three rangers powered down. "I guess we won't be seeing you again." Connors said as he handed over his gemstone.
"And I guess," Black Ranger replied, "I'll be seeing you in a few minutes."

A final nod, and he stepped into the portal, with the hopes of a world that no longer existed, on his shoulders.

"Well, what have we here?"
Connors and the others spun to see Viceptor, Kronik and a squadron of other Krochakan foot soldiers march toward them.

Connors looked to his friends. "For the future, guys."
"FOR THE FUTURE!" they cried and charged into what was nothing more than a hopeless battle.

The three humans fought bravely, but they were no match for the skill of the soldiers. Kevin had a broken leg and was helpless.
Jacqui's body collapsed, life pouring from her cut throat.

"NOOO!!" Connors yelled and made one desperate charge toward the advancing invaders.
Kronik saw him coming and lashed out with a kick to his shins, which shattered them.
He knelt down beside the man who had worn the powers of the sonic jet only moments before. "Your world is over. And you will die with the knowledge that you let it happen."

He had failed his mentor and his friend as he watched the last Krochakan foot soldier vanish through the portal.

He could do nothing to stop it happening all over again.

He closed his eyes and welcomed the darkness.

He looked at where he landed. "Where am I?" .
It looked like an old warehouse. He knew where this was. The old dockyards.
The question now was when was he?
He peered outside, shielding his eyes from the sunlight. It had been so long since he had seen the sun.
It was before the nuclear winter.
It was beautiful. He had to find out when he was, and what he was looking for.
He was in the right time.
But time was running out.

***
He had been walking for what seemed like hours. He was in no doubt that whenever he was it was before the invasion.
He rounded a corner to see a group of Cyber bytes, the cybernetic foot soldiers of the Alliance, cornering a group of three young fighters.
"Damn, they followed me."
He ducked back around the corner and put his hand into his back pocket. "Hope this works." he grumbled, strapping the device to his wrist.

***
Cyber bytes were all around them. They had fought them off but they just kept coming.
As good a fighter as he was, Kevin Cameron just could not cope with them. Jacqui Kinsella had been trying to protect the injured Dave Connors, who lay unconscious on the ground.
"How’s he doing?" Kevin asked between trading blows with a Cyber byte.
"Not good, he's losing a lot of blood." she answered, applying pressure to the wound.
"Hang on." he was knocked to the ground beside his two friends.
His blue shirt was covered with blood. He wasn't sure but he thought he could see a black form making its way through the crowd before he lost consciousness.

The man in the black suit pushed the Cyber bytes clear and made his way to the three fallen teenagers. "Get them together," he yelled to Jacqui. "I'm getting you out of here."
"Who are you?" she stuttered.
The Black Ranger fought off three of the invaders. "No time to explain. Do it!"
She gathered her injured friends together and he activated his teleporter.

The three teens and the black stranger materialised in the old warehouse. He laid Dave Connors and Kevin Cameron out on the warehouse floor.
"We have to get them to a hospital." Jacqui yelled at him, "They're going to die!"
Black shook his head. "See that bag." She nodded and handed it to him.
He knew who these people were and what they were going to do. "Take the blue one and run it over him." he pointed to Kevin.
He took the red gemstone and ran it over the unconscious form of Dave Connors.
Almost instantly, the physical wounds began to heal. It would be some time before they came round though.

Watching and waiting. The two things he was worst at.
During his early days as a ranger, he had been the first into battle, and the last to give up.
Now, his body betrayed his mind.
He was too old for this shit.

"My head? Anybody get the number of that....Whoa!?"
Black Ranger turned to see that Connors was awake, sitting up and looking right at him.
The once future ranger sprang up out of the make shift bed, adopting a defensive position.
"Who the hell are you?"
Before the Black Ranger could answer, he saw his friend unconscious beside him. "Kev." he whispered. "What have you done to him?"
Black Ranger started walking towards him. "Easy, it's okay."
"It's okay? You assault us and think it's okay."
Connors' voice was full of confidence, but his reactions betrayed his words. Sweat was beginning to run down his forehead and his arms were starting to shake.
Even in his morphed state, Black Ranger knew Connors could take him down.
Hell, he had taught Connors everything he knew.
Well, he hadn't taught him yet, but he had youth on his side.
"Look, Dave...?"
"How the hell do you know my name?"
"There's a lot I know about you."

The door of the warehouse creaked open, spilling the early morning sunlight on the two warriors.
In a flash, Jacqui Kinsella was between them. "Cool it, you two."
Connors kept his eyes on the stranger in the black suit. "Jac, you know this guy?"
"No," she answered, "But I do know he saved our lives. In my book that qualifies him as a good guy."
She left the two of them and went over to check on the now stirring Kevin Cameron.

Connors looked at the mysterious stranger who had abducted them. "You want us on board, you're going to have to tell us everything."
"I can't." the ranger replied. "I wish I could but the timeline..."
That was the final straw. He stepped forward, but Jacqui beat him to it. "Screw the timeline. I want to know what the hell is going on and I want to know now!"

The Black Ranger beckoned to them to sit down and told them his story.
"But some of them followed me back. Admiral Viceptor, Lieutenant Kronik and most of their equipment. I tried to stop them but my morpher was damaged.
Jacqui looked at the three devices on the small shelf. "Power Rangers?" she asked.
The Black Ranger nodded. "The sonic gemstones were constructed using the remains of the dino rangers powers.
Connors couldn't believe what he was hearing. "So, you're from the...a future. A future where we...." he said pointing to his two friends, "Are power rangers? How can we believe...."
"Donna."
Connors was taken aback by the mention of a name which he hadn't heard in years. His first love. "Donna....Donna Lovell?"
"You and Donna Lovell got married and had a son. They were killed in the first wave."
"Why are you telling me this?"

Kevin, surprisingly, was the first to answer. "Because we have to change it, right?"
Black Ranger nodded. At least one of them understood.
"Okay, so four of us..."
"Three." Black Ranger countered, "It'll just be you three. I'll be acting as technical advisor only. I'm a little too old for this."
He stood up and started to walk towards the back of the warehouse. "C'mon, I still have a few things to teach you."
***

She knew he was here, yet she couldn't find him. For all their technology and advancements, the veteran in the black ranger suit continued to evade them.
In a sigh of desperation, she accessed her radio. "Viceptor to Kronik.
"Yes, Admiral?"
"We're going to plan B."

***
The story was interrupted as Black Ranger's wrist started beeping. He flipped open the cloaked device, allowing it to project a hologram into the middle of the room.
"Kronik."
Connors looked at the others, then back at the display. "The nut sack you were telling us about?" he asked, already knowing the answer.
Black Ranger nodded. "One in the same," he turned to the three rangers. "It's time."
He held out his arms, forcing a tray to appear. Then, three devices flashed into place.
Yellow, Blue, Red.
"Jacqui, I know you are true of heart and will always make the right choice. I asked you once to take on the powers of the Bomber Ranger. I must ask you to do so once again."
She nodded and picked up the yellow stone.
"Kevin, you risked your life to bring back the blue sonic stone. It's only right that you....your younger self, dons the powers of the Chopper Ranger."
He was still hurting from his earlier wounds, but he accepted.
"And Dave, you always were the more difficult one, stubborn and you remind me of me. I must ask you become the Jet Ranger once again."
Connors' had to bite his tongue and silently accept. "So, how do we...?"
"Morph?"
Black Ranger turned to them. "Easy, activate your morpher by calling Lets go Super Sonic and then your respective power."
The teens stood there, unsure of what to do next.
"Go!"

One more building, one step closer. Still no sign of the wayward black ranger or the children he had taken.
Kronik growled. His sensors couldn't tell him who he had taken, but he knew. He knew.
"Cyber Squad Alpha reporting in." his radio crackled, "No sign of the ranger or his..."
The signal dissolved into static.
It was time.
"All units! Reassemble at the corner of," he glanced up at the street sign, "Bridge Street and Sky Boulevard."

"Lost something?"
Kronik turned at the sound of the new voice. Somehow, it seemed familiar, and younger. Not as much experience but still full of confidence...no...cockiness.
It could only belong to Dave Connors.
Then he turned and saw the three humans marching toward them. "You three?" he growled. "I thought old blackie boy would have done something original for once in his life."
"Have we met?" Jacqui asked.
"C'mon," Kronik continued, stalling for time, "It's not as if he's a real leader, after all, he was kicked out by...." He was cut off as his cyber teams materialised
"We will." Dave added.
"What do you say we all get reacquainted?" Kevin smiled.
Connors couldn't help but agree. "Sonicisers, activate!"
"SONICISERS, ACTIVATED. READY!"
"LET'S GO SUPER SONIC!!"
"Jet Power..."
"Bomber Power...
"Chopper Power...
"ENGAGE!!"
They watched as the sonics completed their morph.
Connors looked at the armour which had just wrapped itself around him. He didn't know what to say...then, six words popped into his mind.
"Jet Ranger, powered up and ready!" the red ranger yelled.
"Chopper Ranger, powered up and ready!" blue ranger cried.
"Bomber Ranger, powered up and ready!" yellow ranger called.
"SONIC RANGERS!"

Kronik applauded. "Not too bad. Little shabby on the finish though. I would've expected some explosions or coloured smoke. Now to business. Let's see what you pluke faced kids have in your lockers."

Within moments, the three new rangers were surrounded by cyborg like creatures.
Jet Ranger parried one and drove a kick into it's midsection. "What the hell are these things?"
"They're cyberbytes. Foot soldiers of the Krochakans." came the Black Ranger's voice.

Bomber Ranger ducked under one and leapt over the attempted trip of another. "So, how do we beat them?"

Chopper Ranger looked up as three closed on him. Before he could do anything, he had leapt into the air and taken all three down with a spinning kick.
"Chopper Ranger...rotor attack."

Jet Ranger regrouped his team. "Enough talk. I've had it with these guys. Sonic Blasters, up!"
The three drew their side-arms and stood in an out facing triangle. "Fire!" Jet Ranger called.

Energy lances tore through the soldiers, leaving smoking debris in their wake.

Jet Ranger saw Kronik standing alone. "One more time, rangers. "
They placed their weapons in formation.
He took centre position, Chopper Ranger to his right, Bomber Ranger to his left.
"TRIPLE FIRE!!" Jet Ranger ordered and pulled the trigger.

Kronik saw the combo-blast coming and teleported out at the last second, as the blast tore through where he had been standing.

Black Ranger turned as his team made their way into the main hall. He felt a tear forming in his eye. They had done well.
Just as he knew they would.

He thought back to a time so long ago for him, after his first ranger battle. What had his mentor said?
"Guys...Rangers."

The three teens stopped talking and turned to face him.

"I know what you're feeling, believe me I've been there. I'm going to pass on some words of advice that an old friend once gave me. Don't ever get cocky out there. Your powers are in their infancy and when you master them, they will reveal themselves, all of them."

"So what's the catch?" Kevin asked, "I take it we can't go shouting our mouths off about what we just did."

Black Ranger nodded. "You want to tell the world everything, but you have families to consider and out there is a media circus. And you're in the centre ring.
"I only have three rules. One, never use your power for personal gain. Two, never escalate a battle unless you are forced to and three, keep your identity secret."

Connors stepped forward. "We get it. I just hope we're doing the right thing."

***
Kronik stumbled back into the main hangar. "I am sorry, Admiral. I failed you."
"Yes you did, lieutenant. But all is not lost."
"Sir?"

Viceptor turned to him and showed him what she had in her hands. Kronik looked down at what was in the box and then back up at his commanding officer.

"Do they...exist here?"
"Yes, they do. And this time, instead of helping the rangers, they will destroy them."

Angel Grove, California.

He had just caught the final footage of the latest power rangers to emerge on Earth. So many teams, so much power.
Slowly he smiled and raised his hot mug to his lips as the Black Ranger came up on screen.
"Atta boy, Tommy, atta boy."

ENDS.
