I made the pink one from scratch...lol I just cut up hundreds of strips of newspaper, dipped them in flower water and just made a base...then built upon it... it's wierd i'm not even sure how managed to make the pink one...because the next one I made (white) I thought the best way to do it was to make a cardboard helmet first, then apply the paper mache on top of that.
I drew the designs on paper then drew copies of each one about atleast 50 times, cut out each one, dip them into the flower water, then apply them on...that one took a long long time. I did the same exact thing with the green one too....once you do it all the time you think of ways to make it look better, and make them sturdier and stuff like that..it's not hard at all and it's a heck of allot of fun so I suggest you try it...it even relieves stress lol... Just give it a try

how do you form the cardboard into the helmet shape?!

well, I drew out the face of a helmet on cardboard (flat faced), I cut it out...then I cut long strips of cardboard and I taped them together...I curved as I taped so it ended up being a helmet shape. Then I used clear tape, and I taped the entire helmet...to keep the wetness of the paper mache out so it didn't make the cardboard frame get all soggy and lose it's shape :)

Hey everyone, I've done some papier mache lately. I found this site helpful.
http://www.papiermache.co.uk/
Instead of fashioning your frames from cardboard, I'd suggest chicken wire for a nice round shape. Maybe use cardboard for the flat parts like the bottom. Use masking tape to attach the wire to cardboard. Then add several coats of the newspaper. Then add the details/deco of the helmet by building it up with more newspaper crumbled or folded - nice and wet. Then coat it again and again or however many times it takes. THIS TIP WILL SAVE YOU TIME AND FRUSTRATION: Make sure that your helmet is as smooth as possible (no bumps or dents) during the paper stage. It'll be harder later to get it smooth. Once you're satisfied with the shape, GESSO will give a better finish than you can imagine. Add a coat of Gesso and sand it down then repeat as many times as it takes to get the surface and quality you want.
Don't put all your hopes into your first helmet because it really does take practice.
Good luck and eveyone should post their results.
