View Full Version : What Constitutes "Bumping?"

Having seen multiple people receive short bans, I now fear for my life. What exactly will get you banned for "bumping" on RB? On other boards, they don't consider double-posting "bumping." Like if you forget something or are behind and write, "Sorry, new update will be in a week!" you won't get banned. Nor will you get banned if you say, "I need to finish this episode but can't figure out this part, if you could give me help, thanks!" when you haven't asked for help before. So, ShadowRanger or anyone else informed, if you could enlighten me as to how to avoid the fateful ban, I would be most appreciative and...alive. Thank you, and have a lovely day!

Replying to a thread that is on at least the third page of a forum.

i think it doesn't apply to the fanfic forum, seeing as how fast it moves everyday.

no, thats not it.

"Bumping" can be seen many times in the download forums, by n00bs who want their episodes too badly.

Idiot: "Aba vs Hurri PLZ!!!1!1!"
(5 minutes later, same idiot) Idiot: Anyone?
Idiot: Hello? Some one must have it!!!!

That. Bumping is pretty much a way to make people see your thread, or posting in a thread that is UNGODLY old, by posting in a way that contributes nothing to the thread.

Take one bumping I remember. A "biggest fears" thread. it dropped for eight months, then somebody went into the thread, quoted somebody and said "Yeah, I have those same fears."

WTF?! There was no reason for that post.

However, in the old "Handheld discussion thread" people can bring it back from weeks back, as long as they say something that would do some good to the thread, such as a decision made by Sony about the PSP that is relativaly important.

Now do you understand?

and yeah, this probably should be in GD....

In most cases adding to any thread where there has not been a reply asking for a response or adding to a thread where there have been additional posts from other members, but the post was made days agos and has dropped off the page can be considered bumping.

In this forum there is more flexibility because it is easier to have people keeping the individual parts of their fics in one thread. Basically if I created a new thread for CoE, put it in a thread and two days later added a new chapter or perhaps a rundown of a new characters or answered a comment made... this would probably not be considered bumping.

If however I added a thread about COE and in the next post I said: "new chapter coming soon so hurry up and review" or "anybody have any comments for me" or just a silly pointless remark that adds nothing to the thread, but does bring it to the top of the forum again... that is bumping.

Once again it is a grey area and given that in this forum people do add stuff to their stories, I tend to look at each case individually. Normally I pay special attention if the thread has 2 or 3 posts and they're all by the author. Sometimes it's an innocent update and sometimes it is bumping. There is an edit function if you forget something.

Oh and yes this could have gone in GD, but I'll assume you were being specific about this forum.

and if you forget to add something that is why they have that little button labled "Edit" so you can add and remove stuff.

Thank you for the quick replies, everyone! Everything you've said makes great sense. I appreciate all your help.:D

P.S. My question was specifically referring to this forum, ShadowRanger. Thanks for picking up on that.^_^

to avoid use the edit feature instead of replying to add sumpin or in fanfic write a new part
