PROLOGUE

Tobias felt powerful. Whether it was the suit in all it’s silver glory, or the sheer excitement of the moment, he couldn’t tell. Only one thing mattered, and it was the feeling. The feeling of power, of being able to do whatever you want. The feeling that nothing could stop you. He’d never felt anything like it. It was new, different. It scared and excited him. All his life he felt weak. All his life he felt different, out somewhere in his own little world.

Weak. He hated the sound of the word. He hated the image you got of someone when you heard it. No more. From now on everything was going to be different. From now on he’d stand up and fight. No one was going to push him around anymore. No one, not even the hideous beast before him would ever make him feel weak again.

It stared at him with its horrible beady eyes. They were pitch black and showed no sign of emotion or intelligence. It knew only one thing: how to kill.

Tobias glanced at the dead bodies at its dragon-like feet. Their faces were molded in fear and confusion. After all, no one expected to be killed by way of ugly demon. Or alien, he wasn’t sure. There were too many monster things running around to keep track anymore. But he was sure that it was his job, his duty, to stop it.

The monster stood up right like a human, but everything about it barely resembled any human he’d ever seen. It had gray, scaly skin. Slime covered its entire body. Its shoulders, head, and knees were covered in some kind of black-boned armor. Claws replaced hands on each of its four arms, two on each side of the creature. Bone-spikes protruded in threes on each of its wrists. Sharp as the finest sword, they seemed as though they could cut through anything. Spikes stuck out along its back, all the way down to the tips of its two tails. On its head were small tentacle-like things that moved around seemingly on their own. Its mouth was horrible. The teeth came from the sides, and its tongue thrashed about grotesquely. It stood a good two or three feet taller than Tobias, and weighed about a ton or so more.

Despite its size, it moved swiftly and stealthily. The monster lunged at the teenager, thrashing about with its claws and tails. Tobias dodged its blows again and again until the creature stopped and landed on the ground with barely a sound. Tobias smirked on his silver helmet.

He lifted his left hand. With a spark of white light a sword appeared in it. It had an ancient look to it. The handle was black, with a magnificent pattern of a dragon in silver and gold engraved upon it. The wrest was made of gold and shaped like dragon wings, adorned with diamonds. The blade was made of pure silver and shown in the light of the flames of burning buildings— among other things— around them.

Tobias pointed the sword at the beast in a perfect knight-like stance. Nothing could stop him now.

He slashed at the beast with all his might. He managed to give the creature a few cuts here and there, but nothing more.

Something wasn’t right. How could he have all this power, yet still not be able to defeat this monster?

Before he could figure out the answer, the monster head-butted him in the stomach, and he went flying. The hit made him lose his grip on his sword, and it fell right at the monster’s feet.

Tobias landed with a crash on the side of a building. Rubble fell on him, covering him somewhat. Winded, he looked about. Around him people were running and screaming in terror at their attackers. Hordes of monsters stormed around, killing one and all. No one could survive their attacks. Little children cried hysterically, looking for their parents. Likewise, their parents shuffled about searching for their precious angels. All was in chaos.

He pulled himself out of the rubble and wondered where the beast was. He looked around but couldn’t find it. He felt dumb. How hard could it be to find an 8-some odd foot creature with four arms?

It came from nowhere. A sharp, piercing pain that went right through his back— and out the other side. He looked down and saw the blade of his sword sticking out of his chest. It was covered in blood. Blood came dripping out of him and fell to the floor creating a small puddle of blood at his feet.

He couldn’t believe it. The monster had used his own weapon against him.

Tobias clutched at the sword. The pain was blinding and he could barely see. The creature withdrew its grip on the sword and Tobias fell forward. As he landed, the sword stuck in the ground and his body went right through it. The sword stuck out grotesquely as he lay there scared of what was about to happen. And at that moment, he felt weaker than he ever had before.
