I've said before I hate how VBulletin removes formatting so take guesses where italics should be, it's not that important anyway to be honest. I hope people enjoy this, I've not had the time to dedicate to Last Line Defence lately but I really want to write this fiction. In the long run it may not fit continuity, but I will aim to do so where possible, however I will not re-write things if DT reveals them inconsistent later on. Feeback appreciated

A New Ending…

Saturday 29th November 1997

‘So that was that.’ he thought as he walked away, four years protecting the Earth from the various aliens and villains that would have her destroyed and corrupted, and today, he would just walk away from it all. It was weird, part of him felt glad to be living a normal life, not one of a Power Ranger, something that he had not known since moving to Angel Grove. TJ, Cassie, Carlos and Ashley would take over their places as the Turbo Power Rangers, something that until recently none of them had imagined would ever happen, something they would never agree to, and certainly something that would never be forced upon them, and yet…

Monday 24th November 1997

“Zordon?” Tommy asked as his old friend and mentor’s face appeared on the surface of the screen in front of him and his team, “What is it?”
“Rangers,” Zordon started, “I have some disturbing news for you all.”
“What is it Zordon?” asked Tanya, her face etched with concern.
“Alpha and myself have been performing research on the powers that you now use and have some startling information.” Zordon continued, “The combination of wave energy’s used in the Zeo Crystal, and that of the Turbo Turbine used to generate the Turbo Powers, appear to operate on opposite ends of the electromagnetic spectrum.”
“What does that mean?” Kat asked, “We don’t use the Zeo Powers anymore.”
“Whilst that is true, the fact remains that after over a year of exposure to the Zeo powers, and in some cases the Morphing Grid before that,” Alpha 5’s voice came from the far end, “Ai, Ai, Ai! The energies are clashing in a way that could be potentially dangerous to you all!”
“How dangerous?” asked Tommy.
“Extremely.” Answered Zordon, “We have calculated that within the next five days it is liable that the clash of energies will reach its peak, thereby causing your Turbo Morphers to detonate with a force that could destroy Angel Grove itself.”
“What can we do?” asked Adam, “We can’t just stand down and let Divatox win.”
“When one cannot complete a task themselves, it is often wiser to turn to those that may do so.” Offered Dimitria, for the first time since Zordon’s transmission started.
“Dimitria is right.” Agreed Zordon, “It is time to pass the torch, to call forth the next generation of Power Rangers.”

It still struck him as odd, not the lack of the ranger suit, or the zords, not even having to make excuses to Justin’s Dad about why he kept disappearing at funny hours. No, it was more than that, Tommy missed the feeling that he was doing good. That he was making a difference, and yet the lack of that need and obligation to do good? That was what made him feel so free. His education had spent many years being disrupted, prior to moving to Angel Grove his parents had travelled a lot, they were in the forces, it made sense that they’d end up settling down in a city that had a reputation for alien attacks. There wasn’t a battle that went past where he wasn’t scared they were going to get caught in the crossfire. Asides from the travelling though, his ranger duties had made perfect attendance at school nigh on impossible. The sum of these reasons and more were what had got Tommy thinking about his life, and why he now had his bags packed and ready to go. A few pairs of jeans, some shirts, his sparing clothes and equipment, an addressed envelope in the side pocket of his bag, to send when the time was right. This was Tommy Oliver, off to his first day at college, it was odd now that he thought about it, he was enrolled on a palaeontology course, something that he would never have considered if he had not fought alongside and against the mighty DinoZords of the original rangers. The behaviour of those supposedly robotic creatures had always fascinated him, the way they would act and re-act to the enemy and to the rangers themselves, it was only later on in his ranger career that he had found out that Zordon had in fact implanted the mindset of the extinct species into the circuitry.

This was his new life. This was Grad School.

To be continued in this thread. Please, leave feedback.

Great to see someone tackling this. I'm looking forward to seeing where you'll take this.

One thing I was unsure about... How did he get to Grad school so quickly?

It could be like this. If Dana, in the one year between PRLR and PRTF go through all of Medical School. Tommy can go from High School stright to Grad School.

True, but who knows what previous training that Dana had. Was she really a Doctor - I mean did they come out and Doctor in Time for Lightspeed? I ask that because she could have completed the PA process (Physician Assistant).

Well I have two minor reasons for that one. a) I have no understanding of the US education system, and b) Something's it's easier to just accept from time to time. At the end of the day this story isn't about how he got to grad school, it's how he got to be Doctor Tommy Oliver, Reefside High, Black Power Ranger. And here's Part 2

Tuesday 13th January 1998

The lecture’s had finished for the day and Tommy stood around outside the main building of the school, he was waiting for someone he had met a few days ago, a girl by the name of Haley, the pair had bumped into each other in the canteen a few days ago, or more accurately had been introduced. Tommy had bumped into Haley and one of her friends a guy whose name he couldn’t remember off hand but he recognised as having been an acquaintance of Billy’s and had stopped to say hello. The two had met again later and decided to go for dinner sometime soon, and today was the day. He smiled as she walked up, she reminded him of someone, someone who had once been very special to him. Still, now wasn’t the time for thinking like that, this was a lunch meeting between two friends, nothing more.
“Hey Tommy, how’re you doing?” Haley asked as she approached him.
“Yeah, good.” Admitted Tommy, “Yourself?”
“I’ve been worse.” She smiled in reply.
“Shall we?” asked Tommy as he gestured towards the car park where his maroon jeep waited. Haley took the lead and led him to the car.

Thursday 29th January 1998

‘You have to be kidding me…’ he thought as he looked out of the lecture room’s window. He was the only one still stood in the room, the rest of the class long since having fled. What was he looking at? It could only be the humanoid reptile that was out on campus grounds, attacking anything and everything it could reach, especially those things that moved.
‘Man, not here…not now.’ He sighed, “I thought this is what Angel Grove’s meaning in life was.” He looked at his wrist and considered calling for the Turbo rangers, and realised it wasn’t fair to leave Angel Grove unprotected for his laziness, he went for his bag.

“Hey you!” called Tommy as he stepped out onto the college fields, “I’ve had enough of you guys to last me a lifetime, and sending dinosaurs to attack? That’s wrong in so many ways…”
“You think you have what it takes pathetic human?” growled the monster.
“You’ve not been reading your history books.” He called back, before whispering, “For old time’s sake…”

The fight was fierce and the monster was getting the upper hand, it had been sometime since Tommy had trained, with leaving ‘that’ world behind he had figured he could lax up a bit, apparently not. The monster landed a kick to his chest that sent him flying back against a tree.
”Alright, now you’ve asked for it…” he looked at his bare wrists and flicked them.
“Huh?” was all the monster could manage before Tommy waved his arms in the air before brining them together.
“Zeo Ranger V! Red!” the former ranger reborn called out, his suit shimmering into existence around him.

“Wow…” was all that Haley, stood behind the tree could manage… “He did not just say that…”

Tommy walked over to the remains of the monster and looked closely, in the pile remained something that looked something like three glass stones, each around the size of a ping pong ball. “Weird.” He commented as he pocketed the stones, before looking around him and powering down before heading back inside.

Sunday 1st February 1998

Tommy had managed to sneak his way into one of the science labs at the college, since his fight with the reptilian monster earlier in the week he had been dying to find out more about the coloured shards that he had recovered from the creature, unfortunately up until this time he had been unable to find the time to take a look at them. Granted the class had been given the open time on the equipment as they usually were during the week, however he had wanted to wait until he was by himself before he looked into these any further, given where they had come from he couldn’t be too safe. His Zeonizers now sat in his book bag, ready to be used at a moments noticed, god forbid they be needed. There was something very wrong about the shard, and yet he couldn’t quite place his finger on it. He knew that there was some sort of power contained within them, after the years he had spent using The Power he couldn’t help but notice that, but there was more to this, he had felt The Power before in many forms, the Power Coins, the Zeo Crystal, the Ninja Power, and the Turbo Power, each of them was unique and different, yet this felt like something completely different to all of them. If he could just find what…

Monday 1st March 1999

It had been over a year now sine he had first found the gems he had managed to discover two things about them, and he wasn’t sure which one was most surprising when put with the other, firstly they all contained some form of DNA, dinosaur DNA. As best he could make out two were land based dinosaurs and the third was of some sort of flying reptile, of roughly the same period. The second thing was that the gems were of an alien origin (he slapped himself when he noticed this one ‘Gems found inside a violent monster. Yeah Tommy, where else could he have got them? The local Wal-Mart?’) Either one was sensible enough by itself, but why a gem of alien origin would contain the DNA of a reptile that had been extinct for millions of years on Earth was a complete mystery to him The first thing that came to mind was that it could have been something to do with the new Rangers, TJ had sent him an e-mail at some point saying that the team had ventured into Space to try and rescue Zordon from the ‘ultimate evil’ Dark Specter, of course he’d reprimanded himself with another mental slap at this point ‘They’re only in space….besides, whoever heard of time travelling rangers? Complete nonsense. He’d found the gems before he’d ever heard that the others were leaving for space.’ Maybe the gems had been part of that monsters natural biology, maybe they’d been created by evil, or perhaps more realistically they’d been captured in one of the several raids that TJ and Andros (the team’s new Red Ranger,) had reported back to him.

Tuesday 20th April 1999 – Late Evening

An explosion rocked the building that he and Haley had been having dinner in, Tommy instinctively dashed to the window to look what was happening. In the sky above him he saw a swarm of black objects moving in towards the Earth. In his tuxedo, he had planned this to be a special night for them, Haley sat in a red evening dress. She looked mildly frustrated with him.
“I’m sor…” he started, but before he had chance to finish the sentence she had moved around to him and pressed her finger to his lips.
“I know…” she whispered, “You have to do this. It’s what…it’s who you are.”
Tommy nodded and ran for the door, throwing his bow-tie off as he ran. As she watched him run all Haley heard was ‘It’s Morphin’ Time!’

Wednesday 21st April 1999 – Early Morning

It had been a long night…and didn’t his body know it? It seemed the day that he had dreaded since he became a Ranger had finally arrived. The ultimate invasion of evil was upon them, although it seemed to be mostly centred around the city of Angel Grove, presumably because this was where every ranger known to evil had come from, some smaller cities had been noted to have seen fighting. A small town in Switzerland had been defended by a mysterious Asian woman who had appeared from nowhere, Tommy put this down as being the powerless Trini Kwan, original yellow ranger, now settled in the country with a husband. A town down the coast, known as Reefside, a place Tommy had often thought about moving to, was under attack, and being defended by the original red ranger, ‘Probably Jason, Rocky knows better than to risk his back like that, even after all this time…that said, how did he get his power coin back.’ thought Tommy, making a note to ask about the powers if he ever got a chance. The pink and yellow Zeo Rangers had been spotted in Stone Canyon, a smaller city a couple of kilometres from Angel Grove, often mistaken for one and the same. At one point reports of a giant mechanical lion had even been made, Tommy chalked this one up as Adam trying to abuse the damaged remains of the Mastodon Power Coin even more, still, every little helped in the long run.

He had spent most of the night in the Falcon zord, which by some small miracle actually functioned after all this time, fighting off the enemy’s fighter crafts, that TJ had referred to as ‘Velocifighters.’ The old zord had finally packed in sometime around 4am. It was a genuine source of amazement that she had lasted this long after years of inactivity, though thinking on it considering the time some of the other zords, especially Tor or Titanus, had gone without use, it was a veritable wink of the eye. The fighting had been dying down at that point anyway, apparently even evil forces needed some shut eye. He decided to catch half an hour himself before morning came, with the fresh onslaught, he left an old friend, someone he knew closely watching guard for the second shift of the night, Rocky DeSantos.

“Ughh…” moaned Tommy as he came to, “What time is it?”
“Hey, you’re awake?” Rocky half asked, “Nearly 10.30. So much for half hour!”
“Yeah…I need to get back out there and carry on fighting.” Tommy stated as he pulled himself back to his feet, “I must protect the…”
“Just a minute Hero.” Interrupted Rocky, “You know as well as I do that there are other Ranger’s out there protecting the planet, why does it have to be you that does it?”
“Because,” Tommy started, adopting a serious look, “I still have the ability to, I have the Power, and that is a responsibility that never goes away.”
“I…” Rocky stumbled for a minute, gazing away, “I’m coming with you too. I still have the blue Zeo powers.”
“No Rocky. I won’t have it. I’m not going to let you risk damaging your back further still.” Tommy commanded.
“Tommy, I can help. Give me this chance.” Rocky pleaded, “I’m going to do this with or without you.”
“Rocky, I’m still the one wearing the red suit. You stay here, protect these refugees if they’re attacked, but do not go out seeking a fight. Understand?” Tommy asked, “If we need you I’ll call.”
“Sounds fair.” Rocky nodded, “You’re probably right.”
“I know I am…” Tommy started stepping a pace or two away before performing a series of arm movements, “Zeo Ranger V! Red!”

Rocky just watched as his friend ran back into battle, ‘Now there’s a true ranger’ he thought to himself, ‘Willing to muck in, no matter what.’

Wednesday 21st April – Late afternoon

Tommy stood and looked up at the top of the skyscraper, one of a small number remaining in Angel Grove after the events of the last few days. Above it hovered the Dark Fortress, the flagship of the current flavour of the month villain, Astronema as he’d been told by TJ a few months before, apparently not the head honcho, that title went to Dark Spectre, the self proclaimed Monarch of Evil. Astronema was merely the servant he had chosen to conduct his business on Earth. A beam of light shone down from the centre of the ship and two figures appeared under it;
“People of Earth,” announced the female figure, waiting for people to look towards her, “This is Astronema, the rest of the universe has surrendered, the Power Rangers aren’t going to save you, they already tried,” A pause, “And they failed! I control Earth…The Rangers are among you somewhere, hiding from me.”
‘Don’t you know it?’ Thought Tommy, flicking his wrist to reveal his Zeonizer, ‘Not so sure on the hiding though.’
“This is not acceptable,” continued Astronema, “By tomorrow morning I want them brought to me, or I’ll destroy the whole planet. It’s them or you.” With that the two figures disappeared to the ship again via the same beam of light that had put them down.

Tommy mentally kicked himself for not doing something, for not acting in some way. He took a look around him and found himself looking straight in the eyes of TJ, his successor to the Turbo Powers, a group of people around him, most of whom he knew, only one of whom he didn’t, but honestly, looking at the group’s clothing he guessed the identity of the fifth. It had to be Andros, the team’s new leader and red Ranger.
“TJ, man, am I glad to see you.” Tommy called running over to them. The man in red stood up and placed himself between TJ and Tommy.
“Who are you?” challenged Andros.
“I’m Tommy.” He offered, raising his left arm, to show his Zeonizer, “Power Ranger.”
“I’ve told you about Tommy.” Confirmed TJ as he stepped, “He was the Red Ranger before me.”
“I wish we could be seeing each other again under better circumstances.” Tommy offered his hand in turn to both the red and blue Astro Rangers, “But I figured I might be able to help.”

Sorry just wandered back across this when browsing the Fanfic section for something else. I'll pick this back up late May when college is out for the year. If I forget, somebody remind me.

May sound silly but can anyone e-mail or pm me explaining the whole grad school thing? Being british, following the whole US Education system is a bit confusing
