2008. The end of the Mogralord Battles has left our world without an active Ranger team. Every pirate and criminal in the galaxy seems to take advantage of this and set their sights on Earth.

Meanwhile dimensional rifts are forming across the Solar System, something Tommy blames on Billy's tampering with The Power. Tensions rise to an all-time high between the two former teammates, as dimensional rifts bring hordes of new villains to the planet.

A new generation of Rangers will take on powers crafted by their predecessors to combat these new threats. But their true enemy remains hidden within their own ranks...

--- Chapter 01: "Fall of J-Force"

Dr. William “Billy” Cranston walked down the corridor of INET’s J-Force space station in high orbit above the Earth. He paid the Silver Guardian soldiers and lab technicians little notice as he walked past them.

Dr. Cranston was about to bring online his first Ranger team since the end of the Mogralord battles, which left Earth’s Rangers powerless. He planned to name his new team the Jet Task Force Aero Rangers, or J-Force for short.

The J-Force project was one of many initiatives developed through Dr. Cranston’s INET company. J-Force would serve under the ISIS Defense Initiative to combat any villains on a cosmic or demonic scale.

Cranston entered the station’s main lab and walked towards his assistant, Miss Fairweather. She stood near the center of the room, where a massive probe extended from the ceiling, just above a metallic chair with arm and leg straps. The probe was called the Spire.

“Everything’s almost ready,” Fairweather said. “We should be able to bring the Spire online by the end of the day.”

Dr. Cranston nodded. “Excellent.” Billy walked over to the Spire and traced his fingers along its edges. “Contact Naxx.”

***

The ISIS Defense Initiative drafted Christopher Naxx straight out of high school. Afterward, he trained a year to become leader of the J-Force team.

Naxx stood in front of a mirror in his quarters and straightened his uniform, which was nothing more than a gray flight suit and black undershirt. His lover and teammate, Marie, stepped behind him and wrapped her arms around his chest.

“Ready for your big day, soldier boy?” she kissed him on the cheek.

He looked at her reflection and smiled. “As ready as I’ll ever be, beautiful.”

“I’m so proud of you, Christopher…you’ve worked so hard for this,” she said.

“We’ve worked hard.” He turned and wrapped his arms around her. “If this works, you’ll be a ranger right there alongside me. It‘s you and me, all the way.”

“I know, but…” her gaze drifted off. “I’m just not sure if I’m really cut out for this.”

He kissed her forehead. “I know you are. You’re so much stronger than I am. Without you, I would have dropped out of this months ago. You’re what keeps me going.”

***

Technicians strapped Christopher to the chair beneath the Spire. The probe hummed with power. Christopher couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. Then he thought of Marie. The image of her comforting smile eased his anxiety.

“You’ll feel some discomfort,” Cranston said. “What you’ll be experiencing is energy from the Morphin Grid being grafted over your Life Force, similar to how other rangers have bonded with the Grid by mystical means.”

The chair leaned back so the Spire was over Christopher’s chest. The Spire powered on and fired a crimson energy beam that washed across Christopher’s body. He tightened his eyes and clenched his jaw to keep from screaming. It felt like someone was pouring boiling water over his skin, and that the water was seeping through his every pore and deep into his body.

A small explosion suddenly tore open the side of the Spire. The Spire wailed with a loud hissing noise and started to shake. Another explosion nearly blasted the Spire from the ceiling.

Cranston ran over to Miss Fairweather at her station. “What’s happening?”

“An energy overload,” she said. “I can’t explain it…”

A larger explosion tore the Spire from the ceiling with a shockwave that smashed Billy and Miss Fairweather off their feet.

***

The Spire’s malfunction tore open a dimensional vortex in space. The vortex crackled with tendrils of violent energy that lashed out against the station, ripping apart pieces of its hull.

A dark energy rippled from within the vortex. The energy stirred like a torrent of black seawater, and from within, an eye glanced into Earth’s reality.

***

Smoke filled the lab room while Billy climbed to his feet and leaned against a console to steady himself. “Report.”

Miss Fairweather had stumbled over to Christopher and was unstrapping him from the chair. His eyes were closed, and he had suffered second-degree burns. “He’s alive, but unconscious. We need to get him medical attention.”

Billy shook his head. “I meant report on the Spire.” He walked towards the Spire while secondary explosions rocked the station, nearly knocking him back off his feet. “What the hell was that?”

A voice came from the intercom. “Dr. Cranston, the base is under attack.”

Billy knitted his brow and walked closer to the comm. “Attack? From who?”

“We don’t know, sir. Some sort of dimensional…” the comm buzzed with static. “…tendrils of energy…losing hull integrity…evacuation…”

Cranston turned towards Fairweather. “Download data from the Spire and head to the nearest escape pod.” He activated a wrist communicator that was connected to the ship’s main computer. “Sound the alarm to abandon the station.”

The lab’s computer monitors suddenly flashed with static. The static cleared, and the same being appeared on every screen. He appeared human except for his pale-blue skin and elfish features. His eyes narrowed with a fury and hate that had grown for ages.

“We are the Vyram. You have violated our dimension,” the being said. “You will be punished…severely.”

The monitors blinked out.

***

Christopher’s vision slowly blurred back into focus. The first thing he noticed was crew members rushing down the corridor, which was filled with smoke. The deck plating trembled beneath his feet.

He looked up to see two medics carrying him by the shoulders. Miss Fairweather walked in front of them.

“What…” he coughed.

“There’s no time to explain right now,” Miss Fairweather said. “We have to get to the escape pods.”

Christopher slid his arms away from the medics and stood on his own. “Are we under attack?”

“Yes,” Fairweather said.

“Christopher!” He turned to see Marie running towards him from down the corridor. She wrapped her arms around him. “I heard there was an explosion in the lab…I thought you were-”

“There’s no time,” Miss Fairweather said. “We have to get moving. The station is falling apart.”

A violent explosion rocked the station. A wall nearby tore from the corridor and into space, sucking out atmosphere with surprising force. Christopher and Miss Fairweather grabbed onto railing to keep from getting sucked out of the station.

The medics were not so lucky, and the decompression sucked them into space. Marie was nearly pulled out of the station as well, but Christopher grabbed hold of her wrist just in time.

The suction threatened to tear Marie from his grasp, and he felt his grip on her weakening. “Hang on Marie!”

She didn’t even have time to scream. The breach tore her from Christopher and sucked her out into the vacuum of space.

“NO!”

Emergency force fields shimmered into place to seal the breach, and the ventilation system cycled more atmosphere back into the corridor.

“Marie!” he slammed his hands against the force field.

Fairweather grabbed his arm and tried to pull him away. “Christopher we have to leave. You’re too important…”

“Marie!” His face was pale with terror.

Another explosion shook the station.

“Come on!” Fairweather pulled harder, but Christopher would not move.

“No…just leave me here.”

“Christopher Naxx I am giving you an order,” Fairweather said. “You’re a Ranger now. If you don’t come, more people will die. We need you.”

Christopher clenched his jaw and rolled his hands into fists. He followed Fairweather towards the escape pods.

***

A final tendril of energy tore through the center of the space station, ripping through armor and hull plating. The station’s power grid overloaded with a final explosion that consumed the station with a ball of flame that quickly evaporated in the vacuum of space.

Four spears of multi-colored energy shot from the station’s wreckage and streaked towards the Earth.

***

Hours later, Billy walked into one of his high-rise INET offices in Angel Grove. He activated a control on his desk to power up the interactive computer system, named MINT.

“MINT, what’s the status of the energy waves discharged from the station during its explosion?” he asked.

“The energy waves impacted four civilians within Angel Grove city limits,” MINT said.

“To what effect?” He already suspected the answer.

“Unknown.”

“Speculate.”

MINT paused before answering. “The energy waves bonded the civilians to the Morphing Grid.”

“Get me their locations,” Billy said. “And contact Miss Fairweather. Tell her she has an assignment.”

***

Christopher sat with his head hung low. His gaze drifted aimlessly from Miss Fairweather to the floor. She was briefing him on the Vyram situation and energy charges released from the station. But he could barely focus to listen.

Marie was gone, just like that, ripped from his life forever. They would never marry. Never have children. Never hold each other again.

“Christopher,” Miss Fairweather put an edge to her voice that grabbed Christopher’s attention. “I know you’re hurting. But remember what I told you…you’re a Ranger now. And with the Vyram out there…the world needs you.”

“I can’t do this alone,” Christopher whispered.

“You won’t be alone,” Fairweather said. She turned a small computer monitor on her desk to face Christopher. The screen showed four points on a map of Angel Grove. “These points represent areas the energy discharges struck the Earth. We can use this information.”

“For what?”

Fairweather smiled. “Recruiting.”

***

Christopher sat alongside Miss. Fairweather in the back of an INET limo headed towards Silver Hills. The teen narrowed his eyes and looked to the sky. He imagined the blackness of space on the other side of the clouds. In his mind, he pictured the black void where he last saw Marie and the villains who took her from him.

Christopher rolled his hands into fists. He may not have Marie at his side anymore, but her memory lived on inside of him. He made a silent vow to fight on in her memory, and bring justice to those who took her from him.

“We’re almost there,” Fairweather said.

“Where is it exactly we’re going again?” he asked for the second time.

“The Worthington Estate,” she said. Fairweather held a portable data pad in her left hand. “One of the energy waves impacted on his property. Someone there has bonded with the Morphing Grid. A young woman.”

Christopher nodded. “So how do we approach this?”

“I haven’t quite figured that out yet,” Fairweather said. “We’ll just improvise.”

***

Kristin Worthington found her life dull. She was the only daughter of one of Angel Grove’s richest men, and as such, led a life of privilege. Unfortunately such a life was void of any challenge or excitement.

The 19-year-old had received top grades in high school, was accepted into Harvard, and was pursued by every bachelor - all because of her father’s money. At one point in her senior year she stopped going to school, but still managed a 4.0 GPA because of her father’s influence.

For this reason, Fairweather’s offer appealed to her.

“So what you’re saying…” Kristin brushed her dark bangs from her forehead. “…is you want me to become a Ranger…”

“What I’m saying, is that on one level, you already have,” Fairweather said. “That’s why we need you.”

“To fight these…Vyram?” Kristin asked. “Why me?”

“Because there’s no one else,” Christopher said.

Fairweather nodded. “I know this is a lot to take in all at once,” she explained. “But as of now, we have no way of reversing the energy pulse’s effect on your body.”

“So without me you’re a ranger short?” she asked.

Fairweather nodded.

A hesitant smile crossed Kristin’s face. “Sounds fun.”

***

Kristin joined Christopher and Miss Fairweather on a trip to their next recruit, an 18-year-old named Matthew Long who’s family owned a ranch between Angel Grove and Stone Canyon to the south.

Matthew was in Angel Grove when the bolt of energy from J-Force infused him with power. Miss Fairweather managed to track him down to his family’s ranch. But he was far less receptive than Kristin had been.

Matthew tied a horse down to a stable outside and did his best to pretend he had not heard a word of what he was told. “Look, maybe you could come back here another time.” He did not even look at them. “Like maybe this winter. When I’m in Florida.”

“Matthew, I know this is a lot to take in,” Miss Fairweather said. “But you don’t understand. We need you. You’ve already been bonded-”

“I haven’t been bonded to anything, I feel fine.” He walked back towards his house. His gaze lingered as he looked past Kristin. Their eyes met, his cheeks turned slightly red, and he looked away quickly.

“Matthew…” Miss Fairweather called after Matthew, but he went inside and slammed his door shut.

Kristin looked to Miss Fairweather. “Let me stay and talk with him,” she said. “You two can go ahead and find your next recruit.”

“You sure?” Christopher asked.

“Yeah.” Kristin smiled. “I think he likes me.”

***

It only took a few minutes for Matthew to warm up to Kristin. She tried to keep the conversation completely away from Rangers to gain his trust. She couldn’t help but enjoy herself in the meantime.

He showed her around his private greenhouse in the back of the ranch. “It’s always been a hobby,” he said of his gardening. “I don’t know…some people think it’s stupid…but I always thought it was cool. To create like this.”

Kristin smiled. Matthew was cute, in a dorky kind of way. “I think you have quite a talent. I could never do anything like this.”

“Why’s that?” Matthew asked.

Kristin shrugged. “All my life…people have just done things for me. I can’t do much on my own.”

Matthew smiled. “I’m sure you could do anything.” He blushed. “Anyway…come outside. I’ll show you the garden I planted.”

Matthew led Kristin outside towards his vegetable garden. “This is where I-”

The sky suddenly tore open as a rift formed. A giant hand extended from the rift, and drops of energy dripped from its fingertips. The energy drops splashed against the ground and formed an army of grunts called Voids. The Voids were solid black with splashes of orange across their bodies and faces.

Kristin gasped with fear, and Matthew stood in front of her protectively. “What the heck are those things?”

“Vyram,” Kristin said. “They’re after us.”

***

The INET limo drove through the streets of Angel Grove South. A communications monitor blinked within the limo, and Fairweather answered the call. It was Dr. Cranston. “Miss Fairweather,” he said. “We have a situation. The Vyram have tracked down Kristin and Matthew. They’re under attack.”

Christopher leaned forward on his seat. “I have to go back for them.”

“Agreed,” Cranston said. “But you’ll never make it back in time. You’re not too far away from the Defense Initiative headquarters. Return to base and go airborne.”

The limo swerved around and drove towards the ISIS Defense Initiative headquarters. The pyramid-shaped building was just south of Demon City in the Angel Grove Reconstruction Zone, an area of intense rebuilding established after the Mogralord battles.

The limo pulled into a garage, and Christopher hopped out. He ran to an elevator that took him up to the building’s top floor hanger bay.

He ran to his zord, the Jet Hawk, and took off.

***

The Voids chased Matthew and Kristin to the mountains just outside of Angel Grove. Kristin tripped and nearly fell, but Matthew grabbed her hand and helped her keep her balance.

“Come on,” he said. “We have to keep running.”

“To where?” Kristin asked.

“I…” Matthew shook his head. “I don’t know.”

An engine’s whine suddenly cut through the air above. Matthew and Kristin looked up to see Jet Hawk fly through the air.

Christopher swooped his zord downward and triggered a volley of pulse blasts that exploded around the Voids with massive bursts of spark that scattered their formation. He swung his zord’s nose upward and started a climb.

Here goes nothing…He opened his cockpit and ejected. Christopher plummeted towards the ground below at frightening speeds. The wind rushed against his face while he straightened his body, arms against his side, to dive downward.

A part of him wanted to just keep diving and splatter against the ground below. But he had to go on. He had to fight Marie’s killers and save these new Rangers. He had to keep what happened to Marie from happening to anyone again. She would have wanted that.

Christopher waited several seconds before slapping his morphers activation panel.

“Jet Force!” He triggered a wave of energy that washed over him and transformed him into Aero Red. He snapped open wing-like gliders beneath his arms and swooped down towards the ranks of Voids.

Aero Red dove through the group of Voids and punctured through their formation with massive force that hurled them backward. The Red Ranger climbed upward several meters, somersaulted through the air, and landed back on the ground.

Aero Red dashed past a Void while knocking its blade aside and slamming a punch across another Void’s head.

The Red Ranger turned towards Matthew and tossed a morpher at him. The morpher automatically attached to his wrist. “It’s your morpher. Use it to suit up.”

A Void swung a curved blade that Aero Red ducked under while slamming an uppercut against the grunt’s midsection. He turned to his left and smashed a sidekick against another Void’s face.

Through the corner of his visor, Aero Red saw a group of Voids charge towards Kristin and Matthew. They hadn’t morphed yet. They were helpless.

Aero Red snapped into a bird-like fighting stance, crouched down, and leapt through the air to their aide. But a tentacle wrapped around the Ranger’s neck and snapped him backward.

The Red Ranger crashed to the ground as the tentacle tightened, nearly choking off his air supply. Aero Red rose to his feet and struggled to break from the tentacle, which appeared to be connected to an energy rift. The Wyrm monster stepped through the rift.

Wyrm resembled a walking worm with a gaping maw lined with fangs, and bony spikes along the sides of its body. The tentacle was the creature’s tongue.

Aero Red was helpless as a group of Voids chased Kristin and Matthew. The Voids cornered the teens against the edge of a cliff.

Matthew stood protectively in front of Kristin even though his body trembled with fear. He kept backing up, not realizing how close they were to the cliff’s edge.

“Matthew, be careful, we-” her feet slipped, and she fell backward, pulling Matthew down with her. They screamed as they plummeted downward.

“No!” Aero Red shouted. He activated his communicator. “Guys, suit up and use your gliders now! Just slap your bracers’ activation panels!”

Kristin could barely hear over the rush of air as she plummeted towards her death.

What can I say, this met my expectations both in terms of what sort of Ranger team Billy would create and the results. I like the fact while his Rangers may use the Power, it has to be artificially bound to them.

And the side effects. Tommy created his team to counter a threat... Billy's team causes the threat to arise. Makes me wonder though whether Wes' warning will ever come to pass because it seems to me everytime Billy brings a project online, something is going to come up to stop him sending them after Tommy and his crew.

Billy strikes me as Reed Richards for whom making Rangers is a science, all a matter of knowledge and results, while Tommy is more like Doctor Doom, the creation of Rangers is an artform. However I can also see Billy trying to get governmental approval for all Rangers to be handled by INET (very much like Tony Stark in Civil War).

i actually read this last night but i didn't have time to reply so im doing so now :). This was really good. i liked that you still have miss.fairweather still around. having the vyram come to earths dimensions because the billy's j-force power disturbed their dimension was a good idea.

when you were talking about how billy's ranger powers brings the villians to earth, i thought that the morphing grid would of created the villains because of the powers, so i think it was a nice touch that the vyram were already there, they were just brought to earth. i just didn't expect that.

keep up the good work and im about to go give my review for your other new generation. can't wait to read more of this one.

i'm hope there will be frequent appearances by a former red ranger in this story

Nice to hear from you. Billy's powers do not bring villains to Earth, his tampering with the power does. Also, Jet Force will probably not have many guest appearances. You might see Max from Lightspeed and maybe Wes again. There will be a Hurricane/Jet Force crossover, but that will go in the main Season One thread with Tommy and all them.

I was thinking purely in terms of approach, not character. For Tommy the Power comes across as being more than just energy to be directed or a tool to be used. There is an art and understanding to his method. Meanwhile Billy comes across as having a very clinical approach, if he can do it it will be done even if there are consquences.

For that matter you could use a comparison of Yugi and Kaiba. One sees it as a business and technology while the other understands that there is something deeper going on. However that alone does not make either of them evil.

--- Chapter 02: "Recruiting"

Kristin and Matthew plummeted through the air towards their deaths. The new rangers could barely hear Aero Red shout at them through their communicators. “Guys! Use your morphers to suit up!”

Kristin slapped her morpher’s activation panel. “Suit up!”

Matthew did the same and frantically shouted. “Suit up!”

Energy flashed around them as they morphed into their Ranger forms. Kristin became Aero White, the Swan, and Matthew became Aero Yellow, the Owl.

They snapped out their wings and swooped upward into a climb. Aero Yellow slightly wobbled on his wings as they passed the cliff outcropping and swooped back down towards the battle. Aero White held onto his hand to help him keep his balance.

“Just act natural,” Aero White said without making an effort to hide her enjoyment.

“Act natural?” Aero Yellow shouted. “This is insanely unnatural!”

“It’s amazing!” Aero White shouted with amazement.

Her grip on her new teammate weakened, and Aero Yellow erratically flew out of control. He shouted and swooped downward while bashing through a group of bare tree branches. The Yellow Ranger crashed against the ground and tumbled backward before skidding to a halt.

Aero White and Aero Red leapt towards him and regrouped at his side.

The White Ranger helped Yellow Owl to his feet. “Matthew, I am so sorry!”

Aero Red patted his teammate on the shoulder. “You okay?”

“I wouldn’t say that,” Aero Yellow said. “But I’m not hurt, if that’s what you’re asking.”

The Voids regrouped, aimed their hands at the Rangers, and fired pulse blasts from their fingertips. The blasts exploded across their armor with bursts of spark that whipped them off their feet.

Aero Red climbed to his feet and unsheathed his Aero Saber. “You two are Rangers now. These are just grunts. There may be more of them, but we’re stronger, faster, and we can take them. Let’s go!”

Aero Red leapt through the air towards the Voids. He landed and chopped his sword through a grunt with bursts of spark that tore its body in half.

The other two Rangers- they did not do as well.

White Swan moved in to attack. But a grunt kicked the legs out from under her. She tumbled across the dirt, rolled to her feet, and looked up to see a Void charge forward with a jagged saber.

“No, wait!” Aero White shouted.

The grunt slashed across her armor with a burst of spark that whipped her body backward.

Nearby, a pair of grunts lifted Aero Yellow and hurled him through the air. Yellow Owl crashed against a Void and flattened it to the ground.

Meanwhile, Aero Red used his gliders to dive through a group of Voids and slash them aside with massive bursts of spark.

Red Hawk flipped through the air and landed near his two teammates, who regrouped around him.

The Wyrm creature hissed at the Rangers and stalked towards them. Aero Yellow and Aero White took cover behind their leader, who held his sword in a fighting stance.

Wyrm fired jagged bolts of orange energy that exploded against the Rangers with a shower of sparks. When the sparks cleared, Aero Red snapped open his gliders and dove through the air towards the monster.

Wyrm lashed out with a tentacle that latched against the Red Ranger’s helmet.

Aero Red pulled out his sidearm. “Jet Blaster!”

Red Hawk glided alongside the monster and triggered a volley of red energy darts that exploded against the creature with bursts of spark that knocked its tentacle away. The Red Ranger somersaulted through the air, landed against the side of the mountain, and pushed off towards the creature.

Aero Red stabbed his sword through the monster with a massive burst of spark that made the creature squeal in pain. An explosion ripped open the creature’s side with a shockwave that knocked Aero Red off his feet and sent him tumbling towards his teammates.

“Christopher!” Aero White shouted as they ran towards him.

A dimensional tear ripped open near Wyrm, and the monster leapt through the opening to retreat.

***

The Vyram ship floated like a slug within a pocket dimension in Earth’s orbit. The vessel was divided into segments that pulsed with molten power. The ship’s bridge was nothing but darkness so thick it seemed to span infinitely in every direction. A light cloud of mist covered the bridge floor.

The Vyram named Radiege watched the Aero Rangers’ battle through a viewing portal of energy. The villain’s elfish face was pale blue. Dark silver armor covered his body, and a thick, silver helmet curved down from his head like a tail.

“Interesting…” he said. “It seems not every fleshing on this planet is as weak as we thought.”

The Vyram named Grai stood nearby and smoked a cigar-shaped pipe. He was an android covered with sleek plates of black metal. His eyes were dark red. “They could be amusing.” He blew out a puff of smoke. “At least in some ways.”

“Now, now, Grai.” A woman dressed in a white-and-black body suit walked down an unseen staircase. Her head was covered with a wide hat with a red gem in its center. “You know you’re just as intrigued by these bird warriors as I am.”

A boy giggled nearby while seemingly sitting in midair. “Let’s make a game out of it.” The boy, Toran, was dressed in a white robe with thick black stripes that covered his entire body. Dark shades covered his eyes. “Whichever one of us can defeat these Rangers can have this planet once it’s absorbed into our Shadow Dimension.”

A wicked smile crossed Radiege’s face. “Agreed.”

A tear in the fabric of space ripped down the center of the bridge. Wyrm stepped through the tear.

Radiege smiled at the sight of the creature. “Excellent…my pet has returned.”

Wyrm leaned over and opened its maw to spit out several dozen pods. Each slimy pod was thick and leathery with several patches of translucent material that showed energy glowing beneath the surface.

Radiege picked up a pod and smiled at the power ebbing inside. Wyrm had attacked Angel Grove, killed civilians, and used their Life Energy to create the pods. The pods were capable of transforming every-day objects into monsters.

“But before we start our little game,” Radiege said, “let’s test the limits of our enemies’ power…and find out if there are any more of them lurking in the shadows.”

***

A military jet flew through the skies above Angel Grove. The pilot did not notice a tear in the fabric of reality that spat a pod onto his plane’s engine.

The pod sprouted legs like a spider, bit against the plane, and unraveled into organic wires that dug into the airplane and branched out within its systems.

The pilot was crushed when the plane changed shape and converted into a giant monster with narrow red eyes and a gaping maw of jagged-metal teeth.

***

Nineteen-year-old Vince Carter sat around a card table at the Imperial Lounge in Angel Grove East. Everyone at the table had folded out except for Vince and a 21-year-old girl. Several thousand dollars worth of chips were one the table in between them.

Vince eyed the cards in his hand. The best he had was a pair of fours. He looked at the woman and flashed her a lopsided grin. “You first, beautiful.”

The girl blushed and laid down her hand. “Full House.”

Vince laid down his hand. His cards had changed. “Straight Flush.”

The young woman sighed with frustration and got up to leave. But Vince stood and gently grabbed her by the hand. “Hey, wait.” He pushed his winnings towards her and flashed a smile that would make any girl melt. “Consider it a gift.”

***

Vince and the girl walked hand-in-hand out of the bar’s rear exit, which led into a night-lit alley.

“My place isn’t too far from here,” Vince said. “But let’s take a cab.”

She gave him a teasing grin. “In a hurry?”

Vince smiled. “I’m sure you can imagine why.”

Three men in suits suddenly blocked Vince’s path down the back alley.

“Gentlemen,” Vince said as he started to walk around them. “If you’ll excuse me.”

One of the men grabbed Vince’s arm and twisted. Several cards fell from the teen’s sleeve.

Vince narrowed his eyes and slammed a punch against the man. The impact knocked the man off his feet and sent him skidding across the pavement before crashing against a pile of trash. Vince opened his eyes wide with shock and stared down at his fist with amazement.

He turned and ran away.

***

Seventeen-year-old Amy Ness walked with two of her friends outside of school. The three girls were seniors at Angel Grove East Community High School.

“I know, right?” her friend Amber said. “He is so hot, I just wanna be around him like all day, and when he smiles, I like totally melt it’s so cute I just want to jump all over him.” She noticed that Amy was not listening. “Amy?”

Amy’s eyes were fixed on the high-jump set up on the nearby track field. “Huh?” She felt compelled towards the track field in an odd way she could not describe. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t really listening. Can you two wait here for a second?”

Amy jogged to the field and lifted the high-jump pole. She ignored the shouts of the nearby coach and ran towards the high jump. She pole-vaulted through the air, spiraled over the high jump, and landed on the mat on the other side.

The coach opened his eyes wide with shock. He smiled when he realized what this meant for the team.

***

A Worthington family limo pulled up to Angel Grove East high school later that afternoon. Matthew and Kristin were in the backseat. Miss Fairweather had decided the best way to recruit J-Force’s remaining members was to split up. The Vyram’s attack had given them a renewed sense of urgency.

“You sure this is the place?” Matthew asked. “Seems weird to recruit someone who’s still in high school.”

Kristin arced an eyebrow at him and smiled. “And just how long ago were you in high school, Matthew?”

He blushed. “That’s besides the point.”

They got out of the limo and walked towards the track field. The school was hosting a track meet that featured its newest star: Amy.

Kristin and Matthew noticed Amy leap over the high jump with a grace that made the most seasoned Olympic gymnasts look clumsy.

“Gee,” Matthew said. “I wonder who we’re looking for?”

***

Matthew and Kristin walked with Amy to the school’s memorial entrance after the track meet. They spoke with her and explained J-Force and the Vyram. She was a bit skeptical.

“A Ranger? Me?”

Kristin nodded. “How else can you explain what you did out there today?”

Amy smiled and lifted her head high. “Maybe I’m just talented. I have really strong thighs, you know.”

Matthew blushed.

Amy realized what they were telling her was likely true. She remembered being outside several days ago when a bolt of blue lightning struck her down. The sky had been clear without a cloud in sight.

“Well…” she said. “If I do join you…what does being a Ranger pay?”

Kristin arced an eyebrow. “Pay?”

“Yeah,” Amy said. “A girl’s gotta have money. The track coach gave me $500 to join the team.”

Kristin sighed and reached into her purse. “If it’s money you need…” She pulled out her wallet, wrote Amy a check, tore it out, and handed it to her. “This should cover it.”

Amy stopped blinking when she saw the check. “That’s a lot of zeroes!”

Kristin put a morpher onto Amy’s right wrist and a communicator on her left wrist. “Welcome to the team.”

A spatial rift suddenly tore open nearby, and Wyrm stepped through. A group of Voids followed.

***

Vince played his saxophone for the crowd at the Blue Harp lounge in Angel Grove East. The establishment offered live jazz music 24 hours a day. His mind wandered as he played. He pictured the clouds, high above the ground, and felt the urge to soar.

Vince stopped playing when he noticed he had crushed his instrument. “This is getting ridiculous.”

A hand reached out to Vince’s shoulder. Startled, he turned to face a stranger dressed in a red sports jacket and black slacks. “My name is Christopher,” he said. “We need to talk.”

***

Vince joined Christopher and Miss Fairweather in the bottom level of a parking garage. They filled him in about J-Force and the Vyram.

Vince smiled mockingly at them. “It’s not that I think you’re both crazy, which I do, by the way. It’s that I want no part in this. I have better things to do with my time.”

Christopher narrowed his eyes. “Like playing the saxophone in some club? You call that a life?”

“Yes, actually,” Vince said. “Now run along and find someone else to play with.”

Christopher blocked Vince’s path. “I can’t let you just walk away.”

“I don’t believe I’m giving you much choice.” Vince slammed a punch across Christopher’s face.

Christopher stumbled backward and wiped the blood from his nose. He glared at Vince and pounced forward. Christopher gathered all the anger he had pent up since losing Marie, and he unleashed that anger.

Christopher slammed a roundkick against Vince’s side and a hook punch across his face. Vince stumbled back, and Christopher pressed forward with a punch that Vince blocked.

Vince grabbed Christopher by the arm, twisted, and bashed his forehead against Christopher’s nose.

Nearby, Fairweather crossed her arms over her chest and sighed. She would have tried to break them up, but she knew better.

Christopher knocked Vince’s arms away and smashed a punch against the reluctant recruit’s chest. The ranger spun forward with a sidekick that knocked Vince off his feet and sent him crashing against the side of a car.

Christopher’s communicator toned before he could press on with his attack. It was Matthew. “Hey! The Vyram found us! We need help!”

“I’m on my way,” Christopher answered.

Vince climbed to his feet as he watched Christopher and Miss Fairweather run off. “Hey, get back here! We weren’t done with our little dance!”

Vince ran to his nearby motorcycle, hopped on, and sped after them.

***

Christopher had parked Jet Hawk on a nearby rooftop. He hopped into his zord’s cockpit, activated the controls, and blasted off to help his friends.

On the streets below, Vince followed the zord’s path while swerving through the streets.

Christopher activated the radar in the center of his zord’s control panel. The radar zeroed in on Matthew and Kristin’s signal, as well as another blip he assumed was the new ranger recruit.

A warning signal suddenly flashed on the ranger’s console.

The giant fighter-jet monster, which INET would label as VyFighter, swooped down from behind and fired jagged-orange energy bolts that streaked towards Jet Hawk.

Christopher pulled his pilot stick back hard, leading Jet Hawk into a climb and bank to avoid the blasts.

Jet Hawk circled around and moved in behind VyFighter, and Christopher locked his weapons onto his target. He triggered a volley of red energy darts that streaked towards the monster.

VyFighter rolled hard to starboard, but the blasts exploded against his armor with bursts of spark.

Jet Hawk dove back down to street level to try and shake VyFighter. Christopher piloted his zord through rows of skyscrapers that spanned several block. But he could not shake VyFighter from his tail.

Christopher turned hard to port around a skyscraper and opened his eyes wide with shock when he noticed the skeletal structure of a building under re-construction. He rolled his zord onto its starboard side and passed through the iron beams as VyFighter followed.

VyFighter fired jagged energy bolts that exploded around the zord with bursts of spark and tore through the support beams.

Jet Hawk zoomed through the other side of the building and dove upward into the air.

Below, Vince pulled his motorcycle to a stop near the side of the street. He had lost sight of Jet Hawk again. And although he didn’t realize it, he was only able to follow Christopher through their connection shared by the J-Force energy.

He cursed beneath his breath. “Where’d he fly off to…”

VyFighter suddenly swooped downward and fired jagged energy bolts that exploded around Vince with massive bursts of flame that hurled him from his bike. The monster had IDed his energy signature as a match with the other Rangers.

VyFighter swooped down, used its hand to grab Vince, and flew back through the air. The teen screamed as the wind rushed against face.

Christopher swung his zord down through a head-on flight towards the monster. He narrowed his eyes and kept his finger on the trigger. The zord and monster zoomed closer to each other.

At the last second, Jet Hawk rolled hard to port and fired red energy darts that exploded against the monster’s shoulder with a massive bursts of spark.

The blasts knocked Vince from the monster’s grasp, and he started plummeting towards the ground far below.

Christopher rolled his zord so his cockpit faced downward and hit eject. He dove through the air with his arms at his sides and shot closer to Vince. He somersaulted to slightly slow his descent and flattened his body when he was close enough to Vince.

Christopher tossed Vince a morpher, which latched onto his right wrist.

Christopher showed his own morpher and slapped its activation panel to demonstrate. “Suit up!” Energy flashed around him as he morphed into his Ranger form.

Vince slapped his morpher’s activation panel without hesitation. Energy flashed around him as he morphed into Aero Black, the Condor.

The two Rangers snapped open their wing gliders and dove through the air.

***

Wyrm and the Voids chased Matthew, Kristin, and Amy through the trees of Duskwood Park.

Matthew pointed to where Christopher had leapt from Jet Hawk, which was not too far in the distance. “Over there!” He armed his morpher. “We have to catch up with him.”

Matthew and Kristin slapped their braces’ activation panels and morphed into their Ranger forms.

Amy looked back and forth between the bracers on both her wrists. Her cheeks turned slightly red. “Um, like, okay, which one?”

“The right one,” Aero White said.

“Oh, okay.” Amy smiled sheepishly and slapped her morpher’s activation panel. Energy shimmered around her as she morphed into Aero Blue, the Swallow.

***

Aero Red and Aero Black dove towards the ground farther east in Duskwood Park. They somersaulted through the air and managed perfect landings as the other three Rangers ran towards them.

“Hey!” Aero White shouted and waved.

“Excellent,” Aero Yellow said. “We’re all here!”

VyFighter landed on the ground nearby and towered over the Rangers. The creature roared through its metal jaws with a sound that shook the earth beneath the Rangers’ feet. A group of Voids scurried from behind the monster and charged at the Rangers.

Aero Red looked to his teammates. “You guys take out those Voids. I’ll handle the giant.”

Red Hawk snapped open his wing gliders and shot through the air towards the giant. He unsheathed his sword, zoomed past the creature, and slashed against its armor with a burst of spark.

Below, a group of Voids swarmed around Aero Black.

A Void chopped its saber towards Aero Black’s head, but the Ranger dodged the blow and smashed the back of his fist across the grunt’s face.

Another grunt swung its blade at the Black Ranger. Black Condor grabbed the grunt by the arm, slammed a hook punch across its head, and smashed an uppercut against its gut.

Aero Black turned towards an approaching Void and slammed a jumpkick upside its head. Another Void slashed towards him. But Aero Black grabbed the grunt by the arm and bashed his helmet against the Void’s face.

The Black Ranger stood arrogantly and crossed his arms over his chest while looking down at his fallen foes. He did not notice the other wave of Voids until their blades sparked against his armor and knocked him to the ground.

Nearby, Aero Blue snapped open her wing gliders and shot through the air while bashing through a group of Voids and knocking the grunts aside.

Meanwhile, hand-in-hand, Aero Yellow and Aero White used their gliders to swoop towards a group of grunts. At the last second, they swooped upward and slammed kicks upside the grunts’ heads.

Above, Aero Red swooped around towards the giant’s head. But the monster swatted Aero Red from the air.

Red Hawk crashed against the ground and tumbled backward. He rolled into a crouched fighting position and looked up to see VyFighter stomp towards him. Through his Ranger-enhanced vision, Red Hawk noticed a gaping hole in the creature’s armor from Jet Hawk‘s pulse blasts. A gas line leaked from within the hole.

“Jet Blaster!” Aero Red aimed his weapon and triggered red energy darts that exploded against the gas line with bursts of spark.

The sparks set off a chain reaction that tore the monster apart with a massive explosion from within. Scraps of shrapnel flew through the air as a cloud of smoke covered the parkland.

The Rangers regrouped around their leader.

“Huh,” Aero Black said. “Not a bad shot.”

The Wyrm monster suddenly leapt through the air and shoved past the Rangers with bursts of spark before landing. The creature turned towards the Rangers and lashed out with a tongue tentacle that grasped onto Aero Yellow’s throat. The tentacle whipped him off his feet and reeled him in across the dirt as he struggled to break free.

“Matthew!” Aero Red shouted. “Use your Jet Blaster!”

Yellow Owl managed to pull out his weapon while skidding across the ground. “Jet Blaster!”

He triggered yellow energy darts that exploded against Wyrm’s maw with bursts of spark. The tentacle slackened, and Aero Yellow rolled free.

The Rangers regrouped.

Aero Red flipped open his Jet Blaster and combined the weapon with his retracted Aero Saber. “Guys, combine your sword and blaster to form the Aero Rifle. We’ll blast him together.”

The Rangers assembled their Aero Rifles.

“Fire!” Aero Red shouted.

Aero Red, Aero Yellow, Aero Blue, and Aero White aimed their weapons and fired beams of energy that splashed against the monster and surrounded the creature with tendrils of energy that sparked across his body.

Aero Black did not fire. He casually stood back and inspected his weapon.

Aero Red looked over his shoulder. “Come on, Vince.”

“I never agreed to be ordered around,” Aero Black said. “So don’t rush me.”

Wyrm fired jagged bolts of orange energy that exploded around the Rangers with bursts of spark, but they kept firing.

Aero Black glared at the monster. “Son of a-”

Aero Black fired a beam of energy that splashed against the monster along with the other Rangers’ energy beams. The combined blasts exploded through the monster with a massive burst of flame and sparks that tore its body apart and incinerated the remains.

***

The rangers gathered on a trailhead parking lot at the edge of the city. Vince was getting onto his motorcycle, which INET personnel had dropped off for him.

Amy was handing Kristin back the check. “Here…”

Kristin reluctantly took the check. “That’s not enough? I suppose I could go higher, but-”

“No, no, it’s not that,” Amy said. “I’ll stay on your team. It’s just that…what we just did…it like, felt really good and stuff.”

Christopher smiled. “We’re glad to have you. And besides, once you get the right paperwork filled out, you’ll be on the Initiative’s payroll.”

Her face lit up. “You mean it does pay?”

Christopher walked over towards Vince and let Matthew and the girls chat. “Well Vince…” he extended his hand. “What do you say?”

Vince pulled on his leather riding gloves without looking at Christopher. Then he punched the ranger across the face. Christopher dropped to the ground.

Vince tossed his morpher and communicator onto the pavement. “I say I don’t want anything to do with you people.” He fastened his helmet. “I’m not a freak like you.”

He rode off.

No, not another WoW player. All my friends on my floor are playing WoW, and i'm sick of it. Is it sad that I know the difference between an instance and a quest without ever playing the game?

Anyways, i'll be waiting for the next chapter. Can't wait to read it

--- Chapter 03: "The Race"

Dr. William “Billy” Cranston was not pleased. He leaned back behind his black, polished desk and tapped his fingers together while looking at Miss. Fairweather and Christopher Naxx. They had just delivered the latest status report on the J-Force team, and their news was disappointing.

“Let me see if I’m following you correctly…” Cranston said. “Vince hit you, and then he just took off. He punched you, and then ran.”

Naxx nodded. “Technically he rode off on his motorcycle, but yes sir.”

“We need him,” Cranston said.

Christopher shifted uncomfortably in his chair. “Sir…maybe we’re better off without him. He has no sense of responsibility. No sense of teamwork. He doesn’t even seem to care about the danger these Vyram represent. In my opinion, he’s dangerous. There has to be a way to find another-”

“There is no other way,” Cranston said. “The Spire was destroyed, so there’s no way to create another Aero Ranger at this point. We need Vince Carter. And from what I saw, he’s the only one of your new teammates who can actually fight.”

Miss. Fairweather spoke up before Christopher had the chance. “I’ll track him back down and try to speak with him.”

“No,” Cranston said. “I need you to give the new rangers a crash course in martial arts.” He looked to Christopher. “Naxx, I want you to track down Carter and bring him in.”

“But sir,” Christopher said. “Maybe one of the others should go. Vince and I don’t exactly get along. Maybe-”

“You’ll go,” Cranston said. “And if he refuses to come back with you, bring him by force.”

***

A man slept alone in his city apartment that night. The sound of dripping water stirred him awake, so he grumbled and pulled himself out of bed. “Stupid building…falling apart…stupid landlord…son of a…”

He stumbled into the kitchen and tightened the sink knobs. The water stopped dripping. He breathed a grunt of satisfaction and dragged himself back to bed. The man was just about to doze off when the sink started dripping again.

“Son of a…” the man tossed off his covers and walked back to the kitchen.

He reached towards the sink knob, and suddenly, the kitchen pipe sprang out like a snake and wrapped around the man’s body.

“What the hell! Ah!” He screamed until the pipe crushed his chest and lungs. The faucet opened like the jaws of a beast and swallowed the man whole.

The pipe slithered back into the kitchen sink and returned to normal. Blood dripped from the faucet and splattered onto the drain.

The transparent image of the Vyram boy Toran floated nearby and laughed.

***

Miss Fairweather set up a sparring mat in the woods the next day. Kristin, Matthew, and Amy joined her for sparring lessons, which they started regretting as soon as their bodies started slamming against the mat.

Miss Fairweather flipped Matthew over her shoulder, and he slammed down next to Kristin and Amy on the mat.

Matthew moaned while rubbing his tailbone and sitting up. “So why isn’t Christopher here getting his butt kicked too?”

“Two reasons,” Fairweather said. “One, he’s already been trained. Two, he’s out looking for Vince.”

Kristin’s face lit up. “We can go help him.”

Amy nodded in agreement. “That’s such a great idea.”

Miss Fairweather couldn’t help but smile. “I’m sure Christopher would appreciate the assistance…but right now, you need to train.”

Amy sighed. “This is so not how I wanted to spend my weekend.”

***

Vince chalked up a pool cue while in a club in Angel Grove East’s Party City. He saw Christopher sitting at a bar nearby, but the leader of J-Force had his back turned and pretended not to notice Vince.

Christopher had followed Vince all day while keeping his distance, but Vince had been on to him every step of the way.

Vince leaned over the pool table and set up his shot. He angled his cue and struck the ball so it flew off the table and towards Christopher’s head. Christopher leaned to the side and caught the ball without turning around.

Vince set the cue aside. “Clumsy me.”

Christopher got up, walked towards Vince, and tossed the ball back onto the table. “Clearly.”

“Any reason you’ve been following me, slick?” Vince flashed a mocking grin. “Do you think I’m pretty?”

Christopher narrowed his eyes. “You know damn well why I’m following you.”

“So you do think I’m pretty.”

“Knock it off,” Christopher said. “I know you don’t like me, and frankly, I don’t like you very much either. What matters is, the world is under attack and needs us. All five of us. Together.”

Vince placed his hand over his heart in a mocking gesture. “Great speech, slick. I am truly inspired. Give me back my bird tights so I can defend the world.”

“Do you take anything seriously?”

“Get over yourself.” Vince shoved Christopher aside and walked out of the club.

Christopher followed Vince to the curb. “You can’t just turn your back on this. I won’t let you.”

Vince hopped onto his motorcycle. “Is that a threat?”

Christopher hopped onto his red motorcycle, which was parked behind Vince’s. “It’s a promise.”

Vince arced an eyebrow at the sight of Christopher’s bike. “You ride that thing?”

“Yeah…you got a problem with that?”

Vince snorted and shook his head. “You’d be better off riding a big wheel.”

“It’s not about the bike, it’s about the rider,” Christopher said.

Vince scoffed. “I could ride circles around you.”

“Christopher smiled. “Let’s make a bet then, hot shot. We race. If I win, you join the team. If you win, I leave you alone, you never see me again.”

Vince smiled. “Bring it on, bird boy.”

***

Matthew, Kristin, and Amy had ropes tied around their waists as they climbed up a hill. The trick was that each rope was tied to several tires that weighed the rangers down and made their climb harder.

Matthew breathed more heavily with each step. “This is so not fair…I didn’t sign up for this…abuse.”

“Technically,” Amy said. “You did.”

Matthew shook his head. “Not this specifically.”

Matthew kept complaining, but Amy stopped listening. Instead, she noticed that Matthew was slightly ahead of her and Kristin on the hill. And she realized how easy it would be to take her string of tires and wrap them around Matthew’s rope.

A mischievous grin crossed Amy’s face. She untied the rope from her waist and wrapped it around Matthew’s rope.

Kristin noticed, and she had to cover her mouth to keep from laughing. Amy silently waved for Kristin to do the same. So she did. Kristin untied the rope from around her waist and wrapped it around Matthew’s rope.

Matthew struggled with each step. “Is it just me…or do these things…keep getting heavier?”

Kristin and Amy exchanged silent giggles.

***

Christopher and Vince sat on motorbikes on top of a hill that led down through a motor cross track.

Vince fastened his helmet over his head. “Let’s get this over with. I’ve got a date tonight.”

“No, you’ll have a mission briefing,” Christopher said. “And some paperwork to fill out. Lots of paperwork.”

“Date,” Vince said.

“Paperwork. Three,” Christopher started the countdown.

“Two,” Vince said.

Together they shouted: “One!”

Their bikes throttled down the hill and onto the track while kicking up a cloud of dirt. The rangers swerved around the first bend in the track and stayed neck-in-neck while throttling forward.

Nearby, a group of preteen boys stopped while on their way to the nearby skate park. They noticed the race and couldn’t help but stop to watch. The race was impressive on account of the two skillful riders, neither of which could gain a significant advantage for more than a second.

The boys were too busy watching the race to notice a nearby water fountain twist and coil up from the ground. The piping lashed out and wrapped around one of the boy’s arms. He screamed and tried to pull away, but he couldn’t, even with his friends’ help.

Christopher heard the boys’ screams and skid his bike to a halt. The ranger dropped the bike and dashed to help the boys.

But Vince kept racing and throttled past the finish line. He skid his bike to a halt and looked towards Christopher with a smug grin. “What unfortunate timing…”

“You idiot!” Christopher shouted as he pulled the boy free from the piping. But the pipes wrapped around Christopher and pushed him to the ground. The ranger looked to Vince. “Don’t just stand there!”

Vince shook his head and turned his bike around to leave. “I don’t deal with crazy. That’s your job. Besides, we had a-”

“Don’t you realize there are bigger things in this world than me and you!” Christopher shouted. “Screw the bet, you have a responsibility! Are you that selfish?!”

Vince looked over his shoulder. “Try not to follow me this time…although it looks like that won’t be a problem.”

Vince sped off.

***

ISIS Defense Initiative headquarters was a pyramid-shaped building just south of Demon City in the Angel Grove Reconstruction Zone, an area of intense rebuilding established after the Mogralord battles.

Miss Fairweather had returned to headquarters for only a few minutes when the alarms started blaring in the command room. Several monitors showed the same image. A monster, VyPipe, had erupted from the ground and was grabbing hold of Christopher, keeping him from morphing.

Fairweather activated the communications terminal. “Matthew, Amy, Kristin…training’s over for the day. It’s time for the real thing.”

***

Vince throttled away from the motor cross track, but his mind wandered. Christopher’s words were stuck in his head. Vince tried to think about something else, but he couldn’t.

What was worse was that he felt connected to Christopher through their powers, and Vince could feel the sense of Christopher’s danger. More so, Vince could feel Christopher’s burning desire to fight and protect.

“Don’t you realize there are bigger things in this world than me and you!” Christopher shouted. “Screw the bet, you have a responsibility! Are you that selfish?!”

“Knock it off,” Christopher said. “I know you don’t like me, and frankly, I don’t like you very much either. What matters is, the world is under attack and needs us. All five of us. Together.”

“Do you take anything seriously?”

Before Vince realized what he was doing, he had turned around and sped back onto the motor cross track. Vince opened his throttle to full and sped towards VyPipe, which had a tight hold on Christopher and was bashing the ranger to the ground.

Vince popped a wheelie and slammed against VyPipe, knocking the monster backward and releasing Christopher from its hold.

“Vince!” Christopher shouted with surprise. He ran to his reluctant teammate.

The other rangers ran to the scene nearby, and they were just as surprised to see Vince. They shouted his name and ran towards him.

Vince did his best to stay casual and act nonchalant.

Christopher pulled out a morphing brace and held it towards Vince. “This is yours.”

Vince silently grabbed the morpher and strapped it to his wrist as naturally as he would a watch.

Nearby, VyPipe rose back to its feet.

Vince narrowed his eyes at the monster. “You dented my bike.”

The rangers stood in formation, with Christopher at the center, and squared off with the monster. For the first time, they transformed together.

“Suit up!” They slapped their braces’ activation panels and morphed into their Ranger forms with bursts of light and energy.

“Aero Saber!” Red Hawk unsheathed his sword and leapt towards the monster to attack.

The Red Ranger chopped his blade across the monster with a burst of spark and pressed forward with a trio of strikes that sparked against the creature’s armor. The blows forced VyPipe back several steps and took him off guard.

Before the monster could defend itself, Aero Blue and Aero White somersaulted through the air. Blue Swallow and White Swan snapped double kicks that knocked the monster over and sent him tumbling across the ground.

VyPipe rose to its feet and looked up to see Aero Yellow leap forward. Yellow Owl hurled a boulder that bashed against the creature. VyPipe struggled to keep his balance and stumbled across the dirt.

“Vince!” Aero Red shouted. “Use your Wing Gauntlet!”

Aero Black armed a gauntlet that strapped around his right forearm and fist. “Wing Gauntlet!”

Black Condor leapt through the air and slammed a punch against the villain that sparked on impact. Aero Black pressed forward with a volley of rapid punches, and each jab and cross punch sparked against the creature’s armor and forced the monster back a step.

Aero Black pulled his fist back and swung a final punch that sparked on impact and sent the monster flying through the air.

The five Jet Force Rangers regrouped.

“Aero Rifles!” Red Hawk shouted.

The Rangers combined their blasters and swords to form high-powered rifle weapons.

“Fire!” Aero Red shouted.

The rifles fired beams of energy that combined into a single bolt of power. The energy bolt punctured through the center of the monster with a massive explosion that tore its armor apart and ripped up its body. The monster’s energy overloaded and exploded with a final burst of flame.

***

The rangers regrouped after the battle.

Christopher walked over to Vince and extended a hand. “Welcome to the team.”

Vince arced an eyebrow at Christopher. He ignored his new leader and looked to Kristin and Amy. He flashed them both a grin, turned on his charisma, and stepped closer to them.

“I don’t believe we’ve been formally introduced,” he said. “My name’s Vince…it’s a pleasure to meet you both.”

The girls smiled as they introduced themselves to Vince.

Matthew watched from nearby, crossed his arms over his chest, and shook his head. He stepped closer to Christopher. “Can you believe that guy?”

***

Dr. Cranston deactivated the holographic monitor on his desk after watching the battle’s conclusion. He leaned back and pressed the communications button on his chair‘s arm. “Cranston to the mecha hanger. Prep the Jet-zords. It’s time for a test flight.”

--- Chapter 04: "The Vyram Queen"

Four months passed.

The Jet Force Rangers had fought against the Vyram at least 12 times, and with the aid of their Megazord, they had won every battle. But unlike their zords, which could combine with ease, the five Jet Force Rangers could not join together as a team. Vince was the main reason. The wild card. The x-factor.

The Vyram warlord Radiege leaned back thoughtfully within the Vyram ship. His shoulder rested against nothing but shadow as he thought of the Jet Task Force Aero Rangers. Perhaps he could use Vince to open a rift in the team, he thought. Black Condor seemed at odds with his leader, and both young men seemed to care for the White Jet Force Ranger.

"Touching..." he whispered sarcastically.

Tendrils of silver energy suddenly flared from his armor and nearly knocked him down. He leaned against the shadow to keep from falling and clenched his jaw to bite back his screams. The pain was intense, like iron files rubbing across his bones.

Nearby, the boy Toran and android Grai paused from their chess game and looked to Radiege, but only for a moment, with the slightest of interest. They turned back to their game. Toran loved games. It was he who suggested that the Vyram leaders take turns trying to defeat the Jet Force Rangers. Whoever defeated the Rangers would rule the Vyram.

The Vyram's only female member, Myra, stepped towards Radiege but kept her distance. She could feel the electricity from the energy tendrils lashing from his body. "What's going on...what's happening to you...?"

"Feedback," Radiege said. "Something is approaching from our Shadow Dimension." He clenched his jaw to muffle a scream. "Its power is...enormous..."

***

Miss Fairweather had briefed the Jet Force Rangers about a new potential threat: the Hidden Task Force Thunder Rangers. The Jet Force team was less than impressed, and only Christopher took the threat of the Thunders seriously.

After the briefing, she ordered the Aero Rangers to go out into town and take a break before their next training session. Her hope was that the outings would help them all to become closer. But it hardly seemed to work out that way at all.

The rangers stopped at a shop along Honey Creek Blvd., a street of rather expensive shopping centers housed in skyscrapers, and went inside at Amy's insistence. Amy smiled and led Kristin by the hand towards a rack of swim suits that cost significantly more than they were actually worth. Christopher, Matthew, and Vince lingered back across the aisle.

"Oooo..." Amy opened her eyes wide at the sight of a blue swim suit that was merely a thong and thin strap of material for the chest. She pulled the suit from the rack and held it up towards Kristin. "How about this one?"

Just the sight of it made Kristin blush. She smiled. "Isn't it a bit...flashy?"

"Girl, that's the point," Amy said as she hung the suit back up and looked through the rest of the rack.

Matthew sighed, leaned his arms against a rack of jackets, and hunched down while resting his chin. "How long do you suppose they can keep this up?"

"The answer to that question will frighten you," Christopher said. He looked down at his watch. "We should be training..."

Vince scoffed. "That's all we do is train."

"It's kept us alive so far," Christopher said. He didn't bother to look at Vince, nor Vince at him.

"Luck has kept us alive," Vince said. "That and our big freaking robot."

Matthew nodded in agreement. "The robot hasn't hurt."

Christopher gave Matthew a look, and Mathew merely shrugged while keeping his chin against his arms. The Jet Force leader looked back to the girls. "It's a Megazord. Not a robot."

Kristin slid aside a few more suits on the rack until she found one she liked. "How about this one?" She pulled a pink two-piece swim suit from the rack and held it up for Amy to see. "Yes? No?"

"Not bad, not bad," Amy said. "Bold in its own way. You could definitely reel in Christopher with a piece like that."

Kristin smiled and blushed. "It's nothing like that..."

Amy smiled. "Mmmm hmmm. Riiiight."

Vince overheard and rolled his eyes. The teen walked towards the swim suits while weaving in between a few other racks. He walked up to the girls and took Kristin by the hand. "Come here for a sec..."

He led her away by the hand, in somewhat of a rush, and the other rangers were too taken aback with surprise to follow immediately.

"What the hell..." Matthew said as he, Christopher, and Amy followed.

***

Vince led Kristin onto an elevator, and the doors slid shut before the other rangers could catch up.

Kristin pulled her hand away from Vince and took a step back. Her heart was pounding in her chest. She wasn't sure if it was fear or excitement, or maybe both. "What are you doing...?"

"Nothing," Vince said. "I just wanted to be alone with you for a moment. I don't like crowds."

Kristin raised her brow with disbelief and smiled. "There was hardly anyone in the store. With the economy and all the attacks-"

Vince leaned in an kissed her. At first she wanted to pull away. But instead, she sank into the kiss as he parted her lips with his tongue.

***

Matthew walked up to the neighboring elevator and pressed the "up" button repeatedly. "What is that guy thinking?"

Amy smiled mischievously. "Oh, I know what he's thinking."

"So not funny," Matthew said.

***

A massive chunk of rock pushed upwards from the barren wilderness outside of Angel Grove near the mountains. The stone, large enough to hold a truck, had pushed its way from the shadowy dimension of the Vyram.

The rock pulsed with a massive surge of energy that rippled through the city. The burst had a similar effect to an electromagnetic pulse and knocked out sources of electricity along its path.

***

ISIS Defense Initiative headquarters was just south of Demon City in the Angel Grove Reconstruction Zone, an area of intense rebuilding established after the Mogralord battles.

Miss Fairweather was in the pyramid-shaped building's main operations room when the lights started flickering on and off, and the monitors went dark.

***

Kristin pulled away when the lights blacked out and the elevator stopped. "What was that...?"

"The power must've gone out," Vince said. "Looks like we're stuck here for a while."

"No..." she said. "What was...that. What you just did?"

"Some cultures like to call it a kiss," Vince said.

"You know what I mean...why did you...Vince, we're not..."

"Kristin..." he said softly as he stood closer to her. "You know the way I feel about you..." he reached out and gently took her hand. "I know you feel something too...when I look at you...when I'm around you...it's like the high dive."

"Vince," she said, her voice quivering.

"Just tell me," Vince said. "Am I right or wrong?"

***

Christopher, Matthew, and Amy were waiting at the elevator doors when the lights went out.

"Great..." Mathew said. "This was not the time for a blackout." He looked upward from the elevator door. "I hope he doesn't do anything to her."

"He wouldn't," Christopher said. "He's an ass, but he wouldn't hurt any of us."

Amy raised an eyebrow at her leader.

Christopher shrugged. "Except me."

***

"Tell me," Vince whispered.

Kristin reached up and gently placed her hands on his chest. "We can't...there are...whether there are feelings or not, I can't..."

"Is it Christopher?" Vince asked. "The guy's an ass. A simple-minded dick."

Kristin narrowed her eyes and took a step away. "How can you still say that about him? He's our teammate. After all we've been through..." She shook her head. "He has a good heart, Vince..."

The lights flickered back on, and the elevator started moving again. The lift screeched to a halt as the doors opened, and the two rangers stepped out. Christopher, Matthew and Amy were waiting at the elevator doors.

"Kristin, are you okay?" Matthew asked. "Vince didn't try anything-"

"Oh, piss off," Vince said to Matthew. "I'm not a pervert."

Christopher's communicator toned, and he answered. "This is Christopher."

"I'm picking up a disturbance outside the city," Miss Fairweather said. "I need you to go investigate..."

***

Radiege walked across the rocky ground towards the strange stone that had erupted from the surface. The stone pulsed with power that twirled the wind, whipping the soldier's dark cloak around his body. The villain approached the rock with caution and carried his curved sword in hand.

"What is this...?" he whispered.

A voice ebbed from within the stone. "I am the Mother. She who rules the shadows."

Radiege opened his eyes wide with recognition. "It can't be...that voice...Empress Juza?"

"Hey!" a voice shouted from behind. Radiege turned to see Christopher and the Jet Force team run to the scene. They snapped into fighting stances. "I knew the Vyram were up to something..."

Radiege tightened his grip on his blade. "Jet Force...this is none of your concern. Leave us."

"It's just you, tail head," Matthew said. "What's with the royal-we crap?"

The massive stone suddenly pulsed with cyan-tinted energy and split down the center, revealing a glowing orb of molten energy. The energy shifted shape to assume a form more suited to Earth's dimension. The creature assumed a human, female form with a flowing, thick robe of white. A white, silver-tinted tentacle wrapped around her body, and jeweled rings formed on each of her fingers. She carried a long, twisted staff, and a slithering tentacle grew from her left wrist. She wore a hood of white and black, secured against her head with a black band with a red gem in its center.

The rangers took a step back, but before they could morph, the empress swung her staff and fired bolts of crimson energy at the team. The rangers dove for cover as explosions burst into flame around them. When they rolled to their feet, Radiege and the new villain were gone.

***

The Vyram had crafted a throne of black wood and silk on their ship. Several feet away from each side of the throne was a pillar of twisting tendrils that extended from the mist-covered floor to the shadows above. The throne was built to belong to the Vyram who destroyed the Jet Force Rangers. But Empress Juza had decided to take the throne as her own.

Radiege took the lead as he, Grai and Toran bowed at the foot of her new throne. The empress reached down her hand. Radiege hesitated before taking her hand and kissing it. He said nothing.

Myra stormed from the shadows and walked towards the throne. "What's going on, Radiege...who is that..." she pointed her sword at the empress, "that woman?"

Radiege looked over his shoulder towards Myra. "She is Empress Juza...she reigns above us."

The empress looked down at her subjects and spoke with a melodious, soothing voice. "It's been a long time since I have seen you, Radiege...Toran...Grai...I see you have adapted to your new forms...forms suited to this feeble, meek dimension."

"I am amazed to see you again, empress," Radiege said. "I thought you had been killed during the invasion of our Shadow Dimension at the hands of the Shinzon."

"It certainly was a long, grueling war," Juza said. "The purpose of my disappearance was to enter a deep sleep, and to regain new strength. Now I have awakened."

Radiege looked up only slightly, and for the first time, he noticed a strange egg-shaped orb dangling from the empress's left hand. The orb pulsed with power, and it was surrounded by white tentacles that slithered as if alive.

"I shall plunge this world into the darkness of our dimension," the empress said. "I will remake this feeble piece of rock into the jewel of a new Vyram Expanse. But to do so...I need the screams and despair of the humans."

***

Empress Juza reached out with her mind. With her psionic force, she channeled energy into several pockets scattered across the city. Dozens of victims fell to her power. Boys riding their bikes, a couple on a park bench, shoppers at outdoor plazas, they collapsed and convulsed with pain.

***

Toran sighed as he floated across the mist floor of the Vyram base ship. "It's no use...the empress is back...no more game..."

Myra paced nearby while tapping her small scepter against her palm. "Did you see the way Radiege groveled? He was like her little puppy dog."

"Enough!" a voice shouted from the shadows. Radiege stepped from the darkness. "I have no interest in serving Juza. I'll kill her with my bare hands if I have to." He unsheathed his blade and looked along the edge of the curved saber. "Before she hatches the Semimaru."

Grai inclined his head. "Semimaru?"

"Yes," Radiege said. "By absorbing the pain and suffering of the humans, Juza will conceive the Semimaru."

"This Semimaru," Myra asked. "What is it?"

"It's told that its power can crack the earth and burn the celestial heavens. The Beast of Destruction."

***

The victims of the empress screamed and convulsed with pain. Jagged chunks of diamond burst from their bodies with splatters of blood.

Juza hovered beneath a bridge near an industrial park and laughed. She took delight in their screams of torment. And their despair fed her "child."

"Yes, scream," she said. "Your suffering and pain feed my child..."

"Stop, Vyram!" Christopher yelled as he and the rangers ran to the scene.

The empress turned and glared with insult. "Insignificant bugs! Do you know who I am? I am the Mother of the Shadows. Ruler of the Darkness. The Empress of the Vyram! Do you presume to defeat me? Be gone!"

She swung her staff and fired spears of energy that exploded around the rangers with bursts of spark and smoke. The Jet Force Rangers quickly morphed into their armor and charged through the smoke towards Juza.

Aero Red leapt through the air, unsheathed his Aero Saber, and chopped the blade towards Juza. But she blinked away as the Red Ranger landed, and his saber swung through nothing but air. Juza reappeared besides Aero Red, and he swung a backhand strike towards the empress. But she vanished and reappeared behind him again. He swung. She vanished. He swung. She vanished.

The empress swung her staff across the Red Ranger's chest with a massive burst of spark that sent him flying off his feet. The Red Jet Force Ranger crashed through a nearby pile of crates.

"Ha!" Aero Black and Aero White leapt side-by-side towards the villain.

Juza swung her hand and fired a wave of orange-tinted energy pulse blasts that sparked against their armor and knocked them out of the air.

"Eat this!" the Yellow Jet Force Ranger shouted as he leapt through the air and hurled a barrel at the empress.

Juza used a TK burst to hurl the barrel backward, and it slammed against Aero Yellow and knocked him from the air.

"Ha!" Aero Blue flipped back and forth around the empress to try and throw her off balance, keep her distracted.

The Blue Jet Force Ranger somersaulted through the air and swung a punch towards the villain's face. "Wing Gauntlet!"

The gauntlet weapon wrapped around the Blue Jet Force Ranger's fist, but before she could strike, the empress opened her mouth and blew a torrent of flame that exploded against Aero Blue and knocked her away. She slammed through a pile of crates and rolled across the ground.

Aero Blue slowly pulled herself back to her feet, and the five Rangers regrouped.

"Jet Blasters!" Aero Red shouted.

The Rangers pulled out their blasters and fired darts of orange-tinted energy, but Juza extended her hand and deflected the blasts back at the Rangers. The blasts exploded around them with bursts of spark that whipped them off their feet. The impact knocked them out of their armor.

Kristin looked down at her hands, realizing she was defenseless, and stared up at the empress with fear.

Juza smiled wickedly at the ranger and fired a beam of light from the gem on her forehead.

"Kristin!" Vince shouted as he leapt forward and pushed her away.

The energy beam struck Vince, and he screamed as it washed across the body. The ranger collapsed to the ground and convulsed with pain, screaming through his clenched jaw.

Juza laughed at the fallen rangers and stepped backward as space rippled around her, and she vanished.

***

The empress returned to her throne, and Radiege walked towards her to greet her. His pace was slow, and his face cold, emotionless. He kneeled before the throne and kept his head low.

"Everything is in place," she whispered. "Soon, we-"

Radiege pounced to his feet and swung his curved sword towards her head, but she quickly grabbed her staff and blocked the blow.

The empress twisted Radiege's sword down and held it there. "What travesty is this?" She narrowed her eyes and fired a TK burst that knocked him off his feet. "Have you lost your mind, Radiege?"

"Juza!" Radiege shouted. "Your reign ends!"

He leapt at her and swung his sword. But she lifted her staff and used the weapon to channel enough energy to hold Radiege in place.

"You're a fool, Radiege. You have betrayed me..." She fired a beam of twirling crimson energy that splashed against Radiege, denting his armor and hurling him through a twisting vortex of crimson energy. "To think of the care I wasted on you...You will be punished in the most shameful of ways...you shall live like a bug!"

***

Vince screamed with pain as he sat up and leaned against a nearby wall. He spun across the wall and tried to run off, but he collapsed.

"Vince...Vince! Hold still!" Christopher shouted.

"Vince..." Kristin kneeled down next to him. He screamed as a trio of diamonds burst from his forearm.

***

Radiege landed on the rocky shores outside of Angel Grove. In place of his armor, he wore rags. And his skin was tan instead of blue. His brain tail was gone, and instead, he had a head of dark hair. He was unconscious.

And he was human.
