Title: Lost in This Moment
Author: JoeHundredaire
Rating: PG/FR13.
Pairings: Sydney Drew/?
Disclaimer: The Power Rangers franchise (especially with the raping of the Japanese sentai series) is a copyright nightmare. Let's just go with 'not mine' and leave it as that.
Summary: It's Syd's wedding day, and to the one person nobody expected her to make something work with.
Joe's Note: New Big & Rich single + writing to music night = fic. We've seen some variations in the uniforms, as well as dressier versions of the Rangers' outfits in one or two episode. I'm running with the concept that, like cops everywhere else, SPD can clean up nicely when they want to.

'Lost in this moment with you, I am completely consumed.
My feelings so absolute, there's no doubt.
Sealing our love with a kiss, waited my whole life for this.
Watching all my dreams come true, lost in this moment with you.'
- Big & Rich, Lost in This Moment

Sydney Drew took a deep breath as she stared at herself in the mirror, view slightly obstructed by the filmy veil on her face. This was it. Her wedding day. After so many years together, and months of nightmarish planning and public relations problems… they were going to tie the knot. She'd never in her life faced something so horribly nerve-racking. Give her Broodwing or Gruumm any day.
It had been revulsion at first sight, followed quickly by anger that she'd spent so many years working her way up through SPD while this… this interloper was allowed to waltz their way in and take Ranger status. One had started their time as a Power Ranger a successful singer, model, and SPD cadet. The other had been brought in BY her for driving around in a truck and stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
Now they were getting married. It was the sort of thing that fairytales and afternoon talk shows were made of.
The songstress and the shoplifter.
The princess and the pauper.
And a dozen other tabloid cover titles that Syd had forgotten over the years. Never mind that she felt like the lesser of the two given her soon-to-be spouse's never-ending generosity and faith in humanity, people needed something to get hung up on and complain about. For them, it was her love's street rat roots. But she didn't care.
Moving out into the antechamber at the back of the church, Syd smiled at Doggie Cruger. Her commander was resplendent in a pure white SPD formal uniform and looked very imposing. Doggie gave her a slow nod before holding his arm out to her.
Her parents had not approved, giving her an ultimatum: her current family or the new one her marriage would make. She'd packed her bags and left without a thought. Denied her real father, Doggie had stepped up admirably as a paternal figure. When the question of who should walk her down the aisle had come up, Syd hadn't even thought about it.
Wrapping her arm around his, Syd took up a position next to him and waited for the music to start playing. Prelude to Act III from Lohengrin, by Wagner. Really, was that so much harder to say than "Here Comes the Bride"? People had no respect for music anymore.
The first notes of the organ sounded and Syd took a deep breath before stepping forward. Left. Stop. Right. Stop. Left. Stop. Right Stop. She could do this. She was not going to fall flat on her face on her wedding day. She could wear spandex and fight her way across beams and building tops. Walking in a straight line in a gown was nothing to her.
Syd did her best to look around at the crowd without gawking at the large mass of people and completely spoiling her regal walk. Some was the media and other onlookers, some were her friends from SPD, and some were past Rangers who had turned out for the wedding of one of their own. She spotted Tommy and Kira Oliver in one pew, trying to entertain a small child. Blake and Tori Bradley were next to them.
Her party of bridesmaids was all girls from C and D-Squad that she spent time mentoring when B-Squad wasn't busy saving the world from one monster or another. Unfortunately for her, SPD fraternization regulations stated a superior was unable to evaluate his or her significant other for promotions, meaning that she had been frozen at her current rank when her lover was promoted to SPD Red.
Glancing down at her dress, Syd smiled. That wasn't a problem. She'd always loved pink.
Kat Manx was her maid of honor. If Doggie was her replacement father, Kat was her mother. The far older Cervian had experienced what seemed like everything and everything, including relationships your family didn't approve of and generally controversial ones. Maybe someday Kat would get that human/alien marriage bill passed and their positions would be reversed. Someday.
Her old teammates were all on the other side of the alter, mostly because nobody had wanted to bend on tradition and none of the B-Squad guys wanted to even get near a dress. Sky Tate, elevated to regional commander after Doggie had passed on the position, was in a matching dress uniform. Bridge Carson, in the formal version of his B-Squad Blue uniform, snuck one black-gloved hand out to wave at her. And Jack Landors, long since retired to help Ally with the homeless shelter, still cleaned up very well in a tuxedo and made a very handsome best man.
Doggie gave her one last small smile before they reached the front and she moved away from him to stand before the priest. He was a homely-looking creature, something called a Troblin, but Phineas was nice and didn't have any problems performing the ceremony, probably because he was married to a vampire. Magical fairytale creatures that lived in the real world, one of whom had converted to Christianity and was a Lutheran minister of all things. Her life sure was odd sometimes.
Syd kept staring ahead as Doggie shook the groom's hand and then moved to his seat and a figure in a black and red SPD formal uniform moved to stand next to her. One blonde curl slipped a little as she tilted her head to the right and Syd mentally cursed her hair stylist. Z didn't seem to notice, staring back at Syd with an awed expression on her face. "You look amazing like that."
"Are you saying I normally don't look amazing?" Syd let out a giggle as Z tried to formulate a response, and held out her hand. Things like that made her smile; it was the kind of faux pas that would have had her mother tearing her hair out about impropriety. But for people like Z, social conscience had more to do with helping others than helping one's own image. It was one of the things she loved Z. And despite her faults, Z loved her back, and nothing else mattered in the big picture compared to that. "You ready?"
"I've waited my whole life for this."
